Software issues versus daily driving

Ok, I am not you...

YES, at least we agree on something!!

:);)

My take here is that I try to keep up with every new post on every board on this forum. The point of that is to learn more - positive and negative. I'm all in on purchasing, but the more I know ahead of time, the more I will be prepared. Occasionally, and I'm guilty of this, we might get off topic for a few posts. A little more to read that isn't relevant, but a little more nonetheless. The challenge is when posters say the same thing over and over whether it's about VINs, number of DEs that have been built and/or shipped, dislikes and likes. I get it, everyone, including me, wants to be heard. But if you read these posts every day, you start to wonder what the point is.

I have learned so much on this forum, but I am also able to internalize the information the first time. Maybe we need to warn or praise over and over to let the newcomers know. But to that I would say, there's plenty of information out there already that if I were just joining, I'd start there. Quite simply, if you've already stated your peace once or twice about certain thing or the car overall, that's probably good enough.

When I put my hands at "10 and 2" on the steering wheel, parts of the display are blocked. My other two cars have HUDs and you get very accustomed to pertinent information being right in front of you. Cadillac even has an infrared night vision camera whose image is displayed in the HUD, and this is from GM!

Yes, there are buttons on the screen but there are certain functions that I think are better left to physical controls.

If you are happy with the controls then great. I am not. Nor do I like the Tesla Model 3 controls.
I agree, there’s nothing quite like a well designed HUD.

I agree completely and have been guilty of repeating myself when presented with questions about my opinions. As Lucid updates the car’s software or new issues arise my comments may change.

Hey, if you like the Lucid Air, then I am happy for you. I am just very disappointed and if I had driven one for over 20 min, would not have bought it.

It costs $169,000. More than a Tesla Plaid, Mercedes EQS and S Class. With Rawlinson’s pedigree, it could and should have been a “world beater”, not just “better than a Tesla” The drive train is good but Mercedes, Audi and BMW will catch up with motors and batteries and Tesla will redesign the Model S then Lucid will just have an “OK” car. The current software is just crap, BUT it will get better over the next year or so. For me, the thrill of 1111 HP is wearing off and I am left with a very expensive car that I just don’t like as well as I should.

“To each his own”

I think this is where we disagree. You seem to assume that Tesla, BMW, Audi, etc “will catch up” but … they haven’t. At the moment, Lucid’s drivetrain and handling blows all of them away, imho.

By that same token, Lucid will also continue to improve; it’s not like this is their final ever vehicle.

I guess my point is of course everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and it sucks that you don’t like the car, but I’m much less willing to assume that other companies are going to catch up when they … haven’t.

Software is much easier to fix than hardware.

Oh, and as for the HUD, we totally agree. I wish Lucid had one, and I particularly liked the EQS’ HUD - it was really really nice. I just hated most of the rest of the EQS.

But a HUD isn’t a killer feature for me, just a nice to have.

I am not trying to compare the size but the cabin experience, again just my opinion.

I will compare the 2022 Navigator, as it is (4) years newer than mine, to my Lucid DE. Here is what I like about the Navigator over the DE.
  1. Great HUD that integrates NAV data from the built-in NAV system or Android Auto
  2. Physical buttons to lock the doors, fold the mirrors and adjust the steering wheel and for HomeLink
  3. Less road noise
  4. Full Android Auto integration
  5. BlueCruise, Ford’s driver assist that is shipping now and works well
  6. SirrusXM radio
  7. Things that Lucid will fix:
    1. The Navigator adaptive cruise works and in over (4) years has never make the mistakes that my DE does
    2. The screens respond fast
I DO LOVE electric power and yes, I like SUVs, I have a Hummer Edition 1 SUV reservation, but to me, the DE is a disappointment as a daily driver.
I have a 2021 GMC AT4. My list would be a little different, but the point is to me, some days you just want to get into a vehicle where everything works.

I agree there is no point in repeating if you don't like there are no physical buttons for the mirrors. With each software update it is worth discussion what was changed and if it is an improvement. The service team picked up my car today to install a new parts for the frunk latches and check the calibration of the park sensors. I hope it comes back with 1.1.7. Cross country road trip starts 2/23. Over 19 days I will be spending a lot of time in the car. Probably end up putting 3200+ miles on the car with any where from 20 miles to 600 miles in a day. Really looking forward to it. I think my daily driver concerns will fade into the background on a road trip. We'll see.

Mine have, for what it’s worth (I’m on a road trip down the coast as we speak) - also 1.1.7 is out as an OTA now so even if it doesn’t come back from service with it you’ll be able to install it quickly.

The only annoyance that has bothered me on this road trip is that Audible via Bluetooth doesn’t always work quite right - if you pause/play via the steering wheel it sometimes switches sources and acts weird. I’ve let Lucid know.

But as a *drive*? It’s been fantastic. And the Adaptive Cruise Control has been great - really consistent, as is the early warning collision system, in the rare cases that someone ahead slams on their brakes faster than the ACC wants to brake for me - it screams at me to brake which makes perfect sense because I can do it more gently than it can at that point.

My fiancée did turn off the lane departure protection because it’s a little aggressive when it corrects. I actually like it, but she thought it was a little annoying.

I agree the lane departure can be a little aggressive. I love the traffic cleared at red lights. Looking forward to testing out the cruise control more.

Have you already plotted your trip using ABRP or something similar to find the best spots to charge at EA only or will you be using other charging sources along the way?

I ask because my pops wants to take a road trip to Memphis from LA and I've been trying to map a route for him, but sticking to EA chargers only is not the most ideal.

Does it brake for you? Is it hard braking?

Most of the EA chargers are close to interstates. I have incorporated some DC fast charging stops. I used "Plug Share" and "charge point" apps. Also, I ordered the Lucid a long time ago and I am traveling through some familiar areas. I've been thinking about an EV trip for awhile. The trip I plan would be difficult in an EV that did not have the range of the Lucid. There are Level 2 charges at Grand Canyon and in Monument Valley and RV spots with Nema 14-50 are not uncommon. There are Level 2 chargers in a lot of places you would not expect. At 25 miles per hour, they are best for over night, but with the Lucid a long lunch to get an extra 50 miles will hopefully get us to the next overnight spot. I also bought a Tesla to J1772 adapter. I am planning some hiking along the way so I do not have an aggressive miles per day schedule. The high mile days planned, do have some interstate and have EA stops planned. @hydbob

Does it brake for you? Is it hard braking?

It does in ACC. It is generally really great at it, but in the rare case that someone slams on their brakes it will try to brake and then sound alarms about collisions allowing me to brake harder (but less aggressively than if it did).

I have not tested the case in which I do nothing in that scenario, because I don’t want to… collide.

It has never surprised me with its braking; let’s put it that way. I’ve found it pleasant.

does it warn you and/or brakes for you when you're driving without ACC?

Yes. It’s separate. And you can set it to early/normal/late. I have it set to early and it’s been solid. Gives me enough time to brake without throwing anyone through the windshield lol, and starts braking for me while sounding alarms.

In ACC, it slows down and keeps up with traffic regularly.
