UX 2.5 OTA Update

Does anyone happen to have the actual TSC instructions for the woofer fix? I'm specifically looking for what type of tape needs to be used, and the correct way for me to apply it.
The service tech told me this morning that it was “butyl tape” which was thick and appeared much stiffer than the duct tape-like tape that it replaced/supplemented.

Here is what the service receipt said if this helps:

Job: 5 TSC-B0824-001-03 Audio Performance Enhancement
Pay Type: Campaign
Concern: Perform TSC-B0824-001-03 Audio Performance Enhancement.
Cause: The fabric tape covering the body holes in the lower A-pillar region is susceptible to vibration and flutter, leading to a reduction in audio quality.
Corrections: Remove the fabric tape from both lower A-pillar body holes, and replace it with a butyl damping patch.
Audio software update not available until after 2.5.0 is updated in the software
Technician IDs: 017486

That's likely an industrial version of Dynamat-like material. I'm sure you can buy a small piece of Dynamat online

Thank you so much!

I'll be getting the TSC completed in a couple weeks. I assume that the service department will somehow authorize full SSP activation, but is there a way that I can know categorically that it has indeed been activated? I don't want to rely on just listening for changes, as I haven't played Dolby Atmos in months, and I'm not sure I'll be aware of a difference.

You will be very aware of it. It is a huge difference.

I'm not sure what you mean by full SSP activation, but if you're talking about the audio enhancement fix that can be unlocked with 2.5, you don't need Atmos to notice it. I haven't used Atmos much if at all, and it's very apparently different.

There's no way to identify anything from the vehicle as a user. I'm sure the service center can see it - do you not trust what they put on the service ticket? Mine was clearly put into the work notes on the ticket after service.

Yes, I absolutely trust the service center to request it, but I thought I read somewhere in this thread that there can be a significant delay between the request and the activation, and that a least some part or parts of the activation trigger extreme volumes, which I would rather avoid... at least while driving.

It won’t happen while driving. It would be when you get in the car, and if the volumes have changed you’ll notice immediately. The sound of you tapping the screen, at high volume, will very quickly alert you :p

Finally got the TSB Audio update for the car. @stratus and others have good ears. The issue is with the center channel. It sounds very much to me like whatever changes to the DSP/internal tuning were made, they set the crossover too high for the center speaker and it’s no longer functioning as a full range speaker. Here’s the Dolby Atmos speaker identifier where you can hear the difference clear as day. https://tidal.com/track/275058835?u

I’m tagging @mcr16 as well, while I really don’t want to spam them with every last little issue, they’d asked for feedback, and I’m pretty convinced this is a software defined crossover issue (or uneven application of EQ to center speaker?) that can be easily fixed.

It’s like that beautiful full range center speaker got turned into a Yamaha NS10 haha.

Oddly enough. Twice over the past two days, my audio has reverted back to sounding like crap. But if I get out, let it all shut off, then get back in, it sounds good against. I have no idea if this is a hardware or software thing at this point

Did the TSB-completed software flag hit your car already? Mine sounded as you describe, newly horrible, until the next day when volume suddenly increased but more importantly, audio quality became mostly great.

So Bunny, if you take Atmos out of the equation, what’s your perception of the center channel performance as well as overall performance with non-Atmos tracks?

It depends on the track. Overall I think it’s awesome, no doubt the bass is fuller and extends lower, in fact all the audio “jumps out” from the speakers more. A great example is this Leonard Cohen track, You Want It Darker, it was mixed to hype the bottom end of his voice and before you’d lose that with the bass, but now the low end is clear and assertive for both his voice and the bass. https://tidal.com/track/66024824?u

The problems I’m hearing are more in the mid 3-5khx range of some tracks, like I love this Star Wars metal cover band Galactic Empire, but because of right where the guitar is in the spectrum, there’s some definite harshness in that range that makes me want to turn it off. https://tidal.com/track/69549377?u

Over all I think the update is a big improvement, can’t complain about bass anymore our loudness and I do think the sound field overall is more forward, but I think they need to reassess what this fix is doing to the center channel for Atmos tracks as it’s not correct, and the mid range needs a little adjustment for stereo tracks.

I’m not entirely sure, they definitely enabled it, and they had done some tests with the Highway assist and seatbelt tensioners so my car was driven after the OTA and before I got it so I’m not sure yet. If it changes again I’ll report back.

I should add that I noticed with this audio system update the discreet directionality of cross traffic alerts now works much better, like if a car is approaching from the right rear of the car it’s very clearly only the right rear surround playing the alert, it really makes a difference. Before my car was less directional, I think it played all the back speakers for those alerts. And now I can finally hear my turn signal, it was barely audible at highway speeds or with the music before. So at least for this audio system update I’ve experienced dramatic changes, mostly for the better.
