UX 2.5 OTA Update

As previously mentioned, I had made a mobile visit for application of the A-pillar speaker tape. When I made the appointment, I asked the agent if there were any other open issues for my vehicle, they had said no, everything else was up to date. Today, I received a Service Authorization to e-sign, and found that there were a few other items that the tech will be addressing. Hopefully they can all be done during the mobile visit.
  • TSC-M0823-002-01 Coolant 5 Port Valve
  • TSC-J0424-007-01 12V Cabin Battery Terminal
  • TSC-E0424-018-01 Wiper Linkage Interference with Main Harness
  • TSC-B0824-001-01 Lower A-Pillar Speaker Distortion
Just dropped car at service for TSC-B0824-001-01 Lower A-Pillar Speaker Distortion. The other three TSC were automatically added on the work order. They also added TSC-J0123-006-01 LV Battery Sensor.

I need to come back to this thread. I very much hope they’re working in a fix for the audio system OTA, I’ve really put it through the wringer on numerous Atmos tracks and the center channel is definitely wrong. It’s actually made the bass worse if the mix assigned anything with bass to the center channel. For example this Slowdive song “Shanty” https://tidal.com/track/295476133?u
was mixed to have the bass melody, which is actually mostly higher pitched bass notes, come out of the center channel only. The bass is now completely gone, like anything under 400hz is totally absent, whereas prior to the update it was very full and warm and in your face in the center channel, which was how it was mixed. REM tracks aren’t listenable anymore because of the center channel defect, and @stratus was right that DEVO whip it vocals in the center channel are shrill and unlistenable. So while they did improve the footwell woofer bass response, which is great, that only matters if the signal is sent there, and to make matters worse a lot of my Atmos library is now not listenable. I love you guys at Lucid but this is making me sad.

As one of the most present audiophiles on the forum, I'm curious to know whether you consider the 2.5 audio update to be a net improvement or detriment. I know a lot of people seem to like almost thundering bass, and they are probably quite happy with the changes, but it sounds like the bass may have arrived at the expense of the melody.

Detriment. I preferred the older more true to studio system. After the update, it feels like any generic system in another car. I understand why they made this choice for the majority but I'm in the minority.

It’s definitely a net improvement for non-Atmos stereo mixes, the volume control behaves more now like other cars even though the original version more closely replicated how you’d control volume in a studio, and the sound is bright and punchy. Can’t complain about that. For Atmos mixes, however, it’s a mixed result, as while the bass response is better than before, the center channel which is a full range speaker in the car now behaves more like a tweeter, so I suspect the crossover in the DSP for the center channel was set incorrectly, although I swear it sounds to my ears like a band-pass filter. Atmos music is a niche playback format but gaining in popularity, but multichannel audio has been around for decades so it’s not like this is new technology, it’s just relatively new in cars. As someone who used to create and mix audio for a living (I was more on the film sound end of it than music although I heard MANY scores in multi-channel audio when the composer would bring their score to the final mix so I know what it should sound like, just don’t have the skills to mix it myself), pretty much everyone with that job would cringe and get quite aggravated when a playback system incorrectly represented the mix that had been made. It would be like hanging a painting in a museum that had yellow lighting or something that distorted the colors. Obviously I don’t expect the car to sound like a mixing studio, but prior to the OTA, for Atmos mixes, I felt it did a good job of representing the mix with the exception of mild loss of the lower low frequencies (it drops dramatically at 35hz but most mixes don’t feature much below that anyway). Now the most important speaker in multi-channel audio, the center channel, is absolutely not playing back correctly. The surrounds/left/right/height channels are excellent, but that’s usually not where you put the voice or other things you want to feature!

I don’t want to give Lucid a hard time, but the Atmos thing is kind of a special issue for me being a nerd about that stuff so I hope it gets fixed soon. Almost no cars do Atmos anyway, but if you’re gonna offer that feature then do it right!

Thanks for the insight. You may recall that you recommended playing a Madeleine Peyroux album, and one song in particular wherein it sounds like she's singing right in front of you. I did that after the TSC and OTAU were fully implemented, but did not get that feeling. Looks like you just explained why!

Yeah, it bums me out also. I don’t listen to Atmos anymore, because of the significant degradation in quality. I sincerely hope they will address it.
On a positive note, I think many high res non Atmos songs now sound a bit better.

I'm torn. Ioved the pre 2.5 Atmos but there are things about the post 2.5 update that I like too. It improved Tidal Max tracks but the center channel on Atmos tracks is definitely off. Couldn't they just go back to the pre 2.5 Atmos and increase the bass?

Let’s hope we can have the best of both worlds. I agree, the majority of the non Atmos Tidal Max sounds improved. Perhaps they can manage to keep that aspect unchanged, at the same time improving Atmos. 🤞🤞🤞🤞

Audio and soundstage tuning is, like most things, not that simple.

Audio and soundstage tuning is, like most things, not that simple.
And is even more complicated by refining the sound that they hope *most* users think they want to hear.

I'm guilty of going ear-blind. It sometimes feels like when I'm at the optometrist when it comes to refiing sound. "Number 1 or number 2?" Idk... just give me the prescription you think is best for me haha.

It is coming. I swear. The Lucid team is very devoted to improving the audio. And they consider it a continuing process, not by any means a one-and-done.

I think the holiday and Gravity software deadline has slowed down the OTA train a bit.

I was sad before, now I am happy. Thanks!

Can confirm. This won’t be a “one update” fix. There is a whole team now dedicated to working on this continuously, and they *know what they’re doing*.

I don’t think you’ll be disappointed with the future of sound in the Air.

I thought it was worth noting on this thread that since the incremental update last week, the iOS app hasn’t crashed once for me. Previously, it was freezing and giving up upon opening every day or two, necessitating a deletion and reinstallation. Hip hip!
