UX 2.5 OTA Update

For those who don’t like the new sound, do you hear distortion in a frequency sweep?

(There are many to choose from, this one chosen arbitrarily)

IMO this is this kind of testing is right track to take. Performing tests like this take the observations out of the subjective realm and make them far more objective.

I’m going to run this now. I’m not sure distortion is the problem as much as they just turned on the old “loudness” setting we used to see on portable devices and it’s ruined the balance. Also, it really does get way too loud way too quickly

This test was the clearest problem for me:

Basically, the left voice is clearly coming from the left AND center. The center voice sounded good, and the right voice sounded good (from the driver’s seat). But I could tell the right voice was also present in the center speaker.

Something like this proved to sound just fine across the spectrum.

This track gave me weird wobbles at first, which smoothed out about halfway through. I’ll have to listen to this one elsewhere to see if that’s normal

Already done, did not improve the sound.
I do not think Atmos tracks were appropriately tested. Either that or there are car specific issues that have yet to be discovered, which I find unlikely.
I listen to a ton of Atmos tracks. I have not had this experience.

Sounds like I’m in the minority, but I’m really enjoying the sound update. Before the update I felt the Atmos tracks were only subtly different than non-Atmos in making use of the upper and rear speakers. Now I’m picking up much more differentiation among center, upper, and rear. Overall it is much more of a surround sound experience to my ear than it was before the update. I’d be curious to know how the audio engineers (eg @Bunnylebowski ) feel about it. I’m certainly no sound expert, but it’s a positive to my ear.
You’re not in the minority; most people I’ve spoken to have loved the new sound. But it would appear there is a vocal minority that hates it (and I suspect something is wrong, and it isn’t just their ears).

Please listen to “Whip It” in Atmos. To me it’s simply awful and illustrates the harshness of the front speaker. It is unlistenable because it’s literally piercing and such a huge disappointment compared to pre 2.5. Many of us have had the exact same observation, so it seems like a systemic issue. At anything other than low volume it’s unacceptable. Fleetwood Mac Atmos illustrated the same deficit. If the sound stage remains as is, so be it , but there will be many many disappointed individuals .
I listened to both Whip It and a few Fleetwood Mac songs in Atmos. They all sounded great.

I’m not denying you’re hearing something different.

I think this is the most important statement here. I know we have a lot of owners here in the San Diego area. Is there anyone amongst us who is dissatisfied with the new sound? If so, let's get together and listen to each other's cars. See if perhaps there is something wrong with yours (mine sounds great). This is going to be the only way to decide whether it is in the ear of the beholder or an actual issue.

Yeah similarly, if anybody around Boston has this update and likes it, I’d love to hear your car in person

I listened to all my Tidal Atmos tracks and they all sounded excellent. My caveat is, unlike many of you here, I like soft rock. Sorry. ;)

My car was coincidentally at the KOP service center when 2.5 arrived. They did the TSC while they had it. It came back this morning and so far it sounds great. I didn't notice any difference in the other sounds so I hope I'm not having placebo effect.

Just updated my software but CS says I'm scheduled for the hardware update - in January! Yes, things are backed up here in Las Vegas.

For those unworthy infidels that don't like the new audiophile-grade sound, try this:

This - obviously - reduces the boomy bass. Some like the boom, I don't, so your setup might vary, just like your mileage. However, this

1731797870541.webp

I think it's more important, because it does 2 things:
  1. It calms down the the front woofer, so you're hear less boom, and the same time makes the rear subwoofers more present, so you start to "feel" the bass.
  2. It dilutes the front-center channel, that spews out hot-mids, so you get less gramophone in your $100k+ car of the future.
  3. If you think the new volume steps are too abrupt, this will help with that too: it will take more scrolling to increase the volume.
So as long as you're ok with a more "spatial" sound (the stage is not on the windshield anymore), this might work. Disclaimer: I'm listening to crap music, on crap BT connection, and my left ear is slightly bigger than the right. I also don't have rear passengers.

I'm fine with this setup. I still think the pre update sound was better, but I can live with it.

Good luck.

I think so too. That's when I had the first problem when I was pulling up to the security scan reader at work and the camera failed error popped up.
Similar issue with mine. Only happened two times so far since the update. Likely linked to curb Alert but I have not yet played with settings.

I had the service rep come to my home and install the tape fix. He then plugged in his computer and set the flag in the software to activate the new feature. He even showed me as he did it, the old flag being AU1 and new flag being AU3. He said the new setting fully activates the amplifier. My audio was fully upgraded when he left.

I listened to "Whip It" in Atmos prior and thought it was a good example of what Atmos can do. Under the improved audio, it is even better. Better bass, more instrument separation and no vocal distortion that I detect. Not saying your assessment is incorrect, just that I find it an improvement.

I tried skimming this thread but i know most people are talking about the sound changes. My biggest issue is my car will no longer wake from app any more. It used to take 30-60 seconds buy after 2.4.x it would wake much faster - maybe 10-15 seconds? I loved it as I often used it to open the doors and trunks for my kids.

With 2.5.0 my app NEVER wakes up the car, even after retrying and waiting 5+ minutes. I’ve tried logo reset and restarting my phone and app. Anyone else have similar issues?

I’ve just noticed the same thing as of yesterday. The car never wakes up from the app anymore

I think it is a problem on their end. Restarting the phone, resetting the car, these kind of things won’t help. This happened once before and they were able to solve it fairly quickly. Frustrating, I know.
