Ordering and Delivery: Lucid Air Pure

Just got a text regarding the event. Rep said it appears the event will be pushed back.

It looks like my DA is also unaware of this event so there's disconnect between their event team and delivery team. Anyways, I just got an update from my DA saying that usually by now he would know if the car would be ready for shipment by the 17th so he's not sure on the timing.

Now I have to strategically think where I would want my Pure to be sent. They just opened a service center in Rocklin, CA but customers can't accept delivery there as it's not a studio so they will drive the Pure to my home. Now I wonder if they would have enough staff there or if there's even enough first batch Pures that will be sent there. My guts says no on the latter as they might postpone delivery until there's enough car orders to be delivered in my area. Asking my DA for advice.

edit: Literally just got a reply from my DA. "Car will go direct to Rocklin which is actually handling all our NV and UT deliveries as well as Central and Northeastern CA, so they are shipping trucks there twice a week full of cars! I actually think it would save us most time going to Rocklin though, as Millbrae is our only other Pre-delivery inspection center in Nor Cal (Newark is just offices) and Millbrae gets 50 vehicles a week that end up in a 2 to 3 week queue."
i live in Las Vegas and my Touring order is being handled from Costa Mesa so unsure if there’s a disconnect regarding territory or model.

Kind of disappointed as a Lucid stock holder when it comes to options esp DDPro. Tesla includes all the FSD hardware irrespective of customers choice. This makes manufacturing very efficient and gives us a choice to activate DDPro in future. At this point Lucid should be focusing more on volumes and less on options.

There's not much hardware that goes with Tesla's "full self drive". In your example, Lucid would've been forcing DDP and +$9000, entry price would be higher and there would be less demand. By how much and whether that increased efficiency would offset decreased demand in terms of profit is debatable.

S

That would imply 400 tourings per week. Should see plenty of VINs sooon
I think so too. An agent told me today that Lucid still expects to produce Pures this year. In other words, they haven't started it yet!

At this point assuming they keep increasing ramp; let’s even say they get to 500/week, considering the holidays they will prob be right around 2k cars for the month so whatever mix that is between models 80/20, 60/40, 50/50 still a needle in a hay stack to get one this month…😩

Wish my guy would never have set the expectation that I could get mine this month, seems like such a fractional chance.

Agreed on Tesla's Camera only hardware! I wish Lucid includes DDpro hardware in every model which I'm guessing will cost around $1000 to $1500 (Maybe less) from OEM suppliers in volumes. Auto Lidars costs around $500 or less these days, cameras and sensors way cheaper. Just saying that the parts are way cheaper compared to the time spent on factory floor installing different options.
But again you're right on "Efficiency Vs Profit". Let's see how Lucid plays it in long run.

Looks like they have some GT’s in stock or at least are offering them with an 18K Incentive to their Employees.

The LiDAR unit Lucid uses costs $1900.

There are also additional cameras and some other bits. But I do think if they can get that cost down over time, they might be able to get that hardware into all models. They just don’t have the volume yet.

At least they aren’t stripping away hardware while promising it makes no difference.

Adding hardware as standard to all models in the future will upset legacy owners. If they're smart, Lucid won't do anything to backstab legacy owners. Best option for Lucid is to introduce an new intermediate option to have all/most hardware excluding actual full Level 3 autonomy, while leaving DDP for full Level 3 autonomy like Tesla's Enhanced Autopilot vs Full Self Driving. Second option would be to lower DDP price, but anything lower than $9k will also upset some legacy owners. One of the main reason why Tesla included all hardware necessary for autonomy is for 1. ease of production, 2. not backstab legacy owners.

Yeah, except they did backstab some legacy owners. Ask the early Model S owners who weren’t granted free cpu upgrades when it turned out their processors weren’t powerful enough.

I agree you have to take some previous owner angst into consideration. But you can’t let someone who paid you ten years ago dictate your future roadmap. It’s the nature of modern tech. Anything you buy now is going to be outdated or cheaper next year.

That isn't a backstab, that's actually a huge favor for legacy owners. I don't think anyone can expect free cpu upgrades. Allowing for cpu upgrades in the first place is revolutionary already. If Lucid would allow for cpu upgrades for our early model Airs in the future, I would be more than happy to pay for that instead of a new car. No other tech allows for cpu upgrades.

The issue we are talking about is to include hardware or not include hardware: This isn't an issue of tech obsolescence.

I would happily pay for any hardware upgrades to keep up with the software. My 8 yr old MacBook Pro when launched was working amazing with Adobe products but as Adobe kept updating their Lightroom and Photoshop, the hardware was showing noticeable lag like a second or two before noticing changes in skin tones to portraits and forget about 4K video editing. I wish Apple just upgraded the CPU and RAM instead of trading in the whole MacBook for a new one.

Yeah, but they promised those customers that their cars had everything they needed for full self driving. And then they didn’t.

I agree, no one should expect a free upgrade. Unless the CEO of the company told them their cars would be capable of something that, checks notes, not even their current cars can do yet.

It’s routine to add features in subsequent model years in other cars. Why shouldn’t Lucid add things to their MY2024 cars?

consumers love new additional features and improvements on already available features. Lucid should add or improve features.

consumers don't like the feeling of paying thousands for a premium option, only for it to lose its exclusivity, especially in the five digit mark $$$$$ and especially so soon. they'd demand their money back and not trust a company that would do that.

That's definitely an Elon Musk thing to promise something before its ready. Technically speaking though, their early cars probably did have everything they needed at the time if a primitive FSD were to work then, i.e. cameras, sensors, radars, robust CPU at the time. They wouldn't have needed to add anything, just upgrade existing components to modern levels.

Consumers have had iphones for a while now. Consumers understand that an iPhone 4 probably doesn't have the hardware necessary for iPhone 13 features.

From a business standpoint, I understand the trims and revenues needed to survive initially but out of all the options, one that disturbs me most is the downgrade to 700V charging system in Touring and Pure models. Why?
