Gravity Features

Whether to wait longer for the base trim will probably be the question that I face. And---just to use my own family as an example---I am not sure what decision we will make.

By late 2023, we really needed to add a second car. My wife wanted it to be a 3-row SUV. We almost pulled the trigger on an EV9 this past winter/spring, in addition to having "reservations" for an R1S and an EX90. But I was able to convince my wife we could wait a little longer for an SUV, including thanks to a nice 18-month lease deal on an Air Pure.

I have been excited about Gravity ever since the teaser video nearly two years ago. But if we are facing an indefinite wait for the base trim, we will have a tough decision to make of whether to hold out or to get an EV9 or EX90, instead. (To be clear, I'm not complaining---I knew this would be a risk---and I fully agree that the Gravity will be a superior vehicle to those others.)

To tie this back to the thread topic, I would be willing to forego a lot of the exciting premium features (rear-wheel steering, air suspension, enhanced HUD, 440+ miles of range) in a base trim; all I really need is a good range figure, some towing capability, and lane keep assist).
I don’t think it will be an indefinite wait. But I have no idea how long it will be. I suspect they’ll try to define it when the other trims launch.

From reading the 2020 press release for the unveiling of Air, a timeline of availability for each trim level was provided. However, I think that timeline ended up being off by about six months (later). It would be nice if Lucid provides a similar timeline for the Gravity.

I feel for you. It's a tough position to be in. Not a good feeling to feel like you're settling for less, but you do what you have to do.

Worst case you can probably get a short lease on the EV9 to tide you over - Kia is offering some huge incentives now.

I paid a premium for my EV6 and now it has 17k worth of incentives thrown in 🙃

I chose an 18-month Air lease specifically to get a Gravity. After 18 months, all the kinks should be ironed out, and availability will probably be much more reasonable.

Lucid completely agrees with you. I can tell you they are definitely not building a HUD like any you’ve seen before. The “floating in the air in front of you” focal length problem is not one this HUD has.
New animations on the website show HUD.
Looking forward to check the focal length problem in real life as I obviously can't verify it on the picture. However the information displayed is at least wasteful: why would I need exactly the same information second time just one inch on top of already displayed? I could justify this for "classic" position of the instrument panel, when you need to look at it trough the steering wheel, but it makes no sense for the instrument panel that is above the steering wheel.

This is the very definition of damned if you do, damned if you don't.

By definition, a HUD, every HUD, is redundant in the information it displays. Lucid has said they might have something new and different on theirs, but in reality you are correct in saying that it shows the same information that is displayed on the dashboard. That said, in two of my vehicles (I Pace, M4) I have had a HUD and from the driver’s perspective (not well shown in photos), the information appears to hover over the front of the vehicle, approximately above the headlights. So you never have to look down to see important information. I actually find it pretty amazing and found that the dashboard was indeed the redundant information, and the HUD became my primary source of information.

Again, that may make sense when the dashboard is significantly below - on the classic place where you need to look at it through the steering wheel. That is where it is in most of cars, including I Pace and M4.
It doesn't make sense when the dashboard is above the steering wheel - in this case the dashboard is just below the road already, you don't need to look down to see it, it is already in front of you.
And this "hover over the front of the vehicle, approximately above the headlights" is exactly the problem I've explained - because the focal length is not on the road, your eyes still have to refocus to see the text that HUB shows.

Then I suggest, on yours, that you simply turn it off. This is a feature that has been widely requested and I’m sure we’ll make 99% of potential owners happy.

I'd prefer to not even pay for what I don't need. So will be very happy if it will be optional.
I guess it was widely requested by those, who never had a car with the dashboard located above the steering wheel.

Our GV60 has a HUD that is exceptional. It is located well above the hood of the car (height is adjustable) directly in my line of sight to the road ahead. It displays a wealth of information and it is semi transparent so my focus on the road ahead is really not impacted. I find it extremely useful and wish my Air had one.

How can you make this assumption before even sitting/driving one? Seems silly to presume so much.

Because I currently drive a car that has the dashboard above the steering wheel. Yes, Gravity won't be the first car with such layout.

What makes you say the focal length is not on the road? You haven’t seen a Gravity HUD yet.

No, but it will be the first with this kind of HUD. Perhaps reserve judgment until you experience one, instead of prejudging based on cars the Gravity isn’t.

I'm not saying that Gravity has this issue. I've even explicitly said "Looking forward to check the focal length problem in real life as I obviously can't verify it on the picture."
This my comment is about another vehicle, where the author clearly confirmed "the information appears to hover over the front of the vehicle, approximately above the headlights"

That's why I'm only commenting what Lucid already showed: the picture, where the HUD literally duplicates exactly the same information that is already in sight just an inch below.

This was the sign by the Lucid Gravity recently displayed at the Electrify Expo New York. Notice anything different?

Yeah, you have new sneakers.

I wish. This shot was from an "Out of Spec Dave" video.

The "over" and "under" are gone from the 800 horsepower and 3.5 seconds.

Are the specs finally being firmed up? Is hope of a performance version now gone?

Well, looking at it from another way, it doesn’t say “up to…”

That sure does sound like the kind of speculation any attorney would object to :p
