Out of Spec 2025 GT long term review

I don't think it has anything to do with the app, I think it's just the time it takes to open it
No, sometimes you need to unlock your phone and then wave it around for the sensors to wake the BT connection and register the phone nearby.

Sometimes jiggling your booty works too ;)

Will do more tests including waiting longer.
Funny thing, I have found that the most influential factor is where the phone is in relation to the antenna, which is inside the car on the roof. If the phone is in my pocket, below the window line of the car, it seems as if it is not as quick to unlock as if I lift the phone out of my pocket and have it higher than the belt line of the car. I don’t know, maybe the line of sight connection is better? This is not mean I have to turn the phone on or tap the display. It doesn’t seem to have anything to do with that.

Having to replace the battery is silly, key fob is plain useless! Just give everyone a normal key fob instead of that ugly black plastic. I have my cat 2 years and still can’t remember the sequence of pushes to open doors/trunk/frunk.

Larger key fob with pictures and longer battery please for all AIR owners! Make us good!

Wonder whose idea this key fob was?
I've been using the FOB for 3 years, and haven't ever had an issue. Not even the battery ones because I used the pouch. Understandably, one shouldn't have to, but it is what is, no headache.

For me at this point the fob and mobile key perform about the same, and neither is good. I'd agree that they work as expected at most about 1/4 times. The range is not good for either, which also doesn't help. I was leaving a store with my girlfriend who drove separately, it had started pouring while we were inside. She unlocked her car from inside the store (with a standard fob) and ran. No problems. My fob was out of range, my app wouldn't wake the car remotely, so I just ran. Phone in one hand and unlocked, groceries in the other hand. The car took 3-5 seconds to wake up and unlock after I got to it and pressed the door handle (despite proximity unlock being on), leaving me much wetter than necessary. This is unfortunately the rule rather than the exception for me, just not always in heavy rain.

On top of that, I do use my valet card to lock/unlock the car somewhat regularly. That has even worse performance. I stand there sliding it around, taking it away, putting it back, over and over with nothing happening. It almost always takes 5 tries or so, while people look on wondering what poor decisions I've made with my life. I keep meaning to ask the service team about this, because no one I've asked has used it enough to say if this is "normal" or if I have a particularly broken NFC reader in my car.

I don't normally like to post this kind of complaining here, but for issues like this I always have a hard time judging whether those of you who say "it's all fine" are just more patient, or if I actually have something I need to press to get fixed.

Wow, what a completely different experience than I have had. I haven’t used the valet card ever, and I’ve only used the phone app to unlock it once. What type of phone are you using? Have you tried to completely delete and reinstall everything recently?

iPhone 13. I have done the complete reinstall in various forms (including following the steps in your CarPlay/mobile key video) multiple times, but it's been a couple months. When I have done that in the past it seems like it's working more reliably for a couple days, then goes back to the same. I'll give it another go though, why not.

Also, make sure your phone is completely updated. If none of that works, I would seriously consider a service visit. Perhaps there is something wrong with hardware in the car? Keep a log of your various experiences with unlocking. The data might be able to help a service person.

I only use the FOB. I've turned off passive lock and unlock. I believe the slow unlock is due to how Lucid is waking up the car. I start pressing the fob when I'm 20 feet away. If never works until I am right at the car (approaching from the front and sometimes the driver's side). 50% of the time I need to press the handle and wait for a three count for the handle to present.

The reason I think it's related to waking the car is I usually lock it while walking away. It usually locks immediately no delay even if I'm 20 feet from the car when I press the button.

Both the Fob and my iPhone 14 work perfectly most of the time. That said, I have auto unlock disabled but auto lock enabled. Normally I just walk up to the car with my fob and iPhone in my pockets and push the door handle, when then presents unlocking the car. Every few months I do replace the battery in my fob.

Here is my take on the key fob issue with the all airs

I think it is working as intended and there soothing wrong with it

Having said that the issue is with the implementation of the technology or the bluetooth and how it works

Bluetooth works based on proximity and not necessarily by distance so you could stand next to the car and it thinks you are still a it far or a bit close and based on the signal it will open or close which is guessing part from the car

The solutions usually all the manufacturers do is to touch the handle to confirm that you indeed next to the car just like what most of the manufacturers do like Mercedes bmw and so on

However there is a better solution which is more accurate and reliable called Ultra Wideband used by Apple but I am not sure why it is not used in cars yet as far as I know … only used in cosuumer devices like AirPods and Apple Watch Ultra

The bottom line, Lucid air in terms of hardware is working fine and as intended

They need to either make it based on confirmation of touch or an action such as the camera senseing you when you are close to the car as confirmation method or fine tune the software in a way that make sense

UWB is being implemented in cars now, it's just new and automotive design is slow. Speculation is that's what Gravity will use.

You can do this by disabling proximity unlock. That requires pressing the door handle (and having a key on you) to unlock. It doesn't solve the speed issue for me since it still has to take its time waking up and recognizing the key, but if your problem is that it unlocks too eagerly, that would fix it.

I was having periodic issues of my GT being non-responsive to the presence of either my fob or mobile key as I approached, and eventually figured out that this would occur whenever I had recently spent time in my studio, which is directly above the garage. In such cases the double click on the key fob still always awakened and unlocked the car promptly. Apparently the mobile key function gets temporarily disabled after a prolonged proximity to the car without any interactions. As such, out in the world in parking lots, etc, key features tend to function about as well (or as poorly) as with our previous Teslas most of the time.

Good suggestion bobby! I will definitely check it out the next time I face this issue.

Mine has historically been really awful. I’ve tried both the fob and the app. I’ve had service look at it multiple times resulting in an antenna replacement. I’ve removed my phone completely and reimplemented the key. I’ve tried every single suggestion here but my car acts pretty much just like the video here.

I can literally close my door and take the two steps to the charging door but by then my car already locks. Same with the trunk. The most frustrating times is when I approach from the trunk and the car won’t unlock so I walk to the door handles to press them in which after 5-10 seconds the car unlocks all to lock by the time I get back to the trunk. Makes me want to scream. I know there are plenty here that have a completely different experience, hell I wish I was one of you. I promise, even the SC is lost on my cars unlocking issues. If they could fix this issue (which based off feedback here seems possible) and fix the AC in the summer months (AZ heat) then I would keep this car until it died on me.

Hey. It's the best car in the world.

Haha, I like the car enough that I almost feel bad complaining about aspects of it. I certainly don't regret it. But even the things/people we love can be truly annoying at times. :p

I refuse to carry a fob unless I'm going somewhere where I may need to valet. My Samsung S22 never worked as a mobile key, but did allow me to reliably unlock via the app (even though it worked perfectly with my Tesla). Fortunately, ever since I switched to a newer Samsung S24 mobile key has worked every time.

That being said, the other day I was sitting in a restaurant near a window with the car close by & it kept cycling open/closed, which was annoying as the lights kept turning on & off into the restaurant door.

I'm guessing most on this forum are pretty tolerant of the quirks of a new car company, as am I, but if someone is dissatisfied because basics like lock & unlock haven't been fully addressed after a couple of years of ownership of a $100k+ car, I don't fault them.

Something is wrong with your card or sensor @segbrk. My key card has never failed me once - do you press the handle when you tap it?

How come our Model 3 proximity always works? Isn't that bluetooth?
