"Announced CEO transition..." Rawlinson out as CEO

No, I mean envy. Jealousy is the fear of losing something you have, or it being taken away from you. Envy is the desire and coveting of something someone else has.
Interesting. I have been using the the word jealousy incorrectly most of my life. I've been using it for both situations.

Give it time. I would wager that you are not alone in this regard and what will eventually happen is that it will become an acceptable use of the word. My favorite such word is "man". It originally mean either sex and morphed into only one. Now...I suspect...it may be going back ala "actor".

Apparently I have too which led me to look it up. According to Cambridge, the definition is:
‘A feeling of unhappiness and anger because someone has something or someone that you want

So I don’t believe I’ve been using the word incorrectly.

Chocking this one up to a difference in style…

Think Chicago Style Guide vs. Oxford….

Words definitions change based on the use of the word by people. To echo @borski ’s sentiment.

Aren’t they mostly able to be used interchangeably in casual conversation/language?

From Wikipedia: “In its original meaning, jealousy is distinct from envy, though the two terms have popularly become synonymous in the English language, with jealousy now also taking on the definition originally used for envy alone.”

So you’re right, of course, that someone could theoretically use jealousy in place of envy, and in modern English it would be acceptable, due to the changing nature of language.

But I definitely meant envy, not jealousy. :)

I have a question for our moderator, Borski. Elon is the owner of Tesla and direct competitor of Lucid. In his role as an advisor to the president with apparently a strong influence on government decisions that can favor Tesla over Lucid and other EV makers, would a discussion on this subject be disallowed?

You can start one in the off-topic lounge, even though it's semi-on topic, but it will inevitably devolve into a HUGE political debate, better left for that sub-forum =)

Good question. I don’t know. To be honest, the hard and fast “no politics” rule had to change somewhat, because EVs, as you mention, are unfortunately now political in nature. But only in the media and public discourse; there isn’t anything *actually* inherently political about them.

Look, this isn’t actually that complicated: we just want civility. We want people to be able to say what they want to say, but maintain an open forum for discussion, and not start throwing insults or ad hominem or offensive language around.

Trans rights, or the department of education, to use two random examples, has absolutely nothing to do with anything here. Discussing them, no matter how I or anyone else feel about it, is best left for other places. Same goes for dozens of other topics.

Elon and Tesla are an interesting one, along with oil / our new “energy emergency” or whatever we’re calling it, because they… *are* quite related, despite being inherently political now.

So my answer, I guess, really remains the same: if people can have a reasoned and decent discussion, without resorting to name-calling, being offensive just to be offensive, or talking past each other… great.

That isn’t how political discussions here tend to go down. I *love* discussing politics. It’s actually one of my favorite things to do (really). That and philosophy. Two of my most common topics with friends.

But this isn’t a board of just my friends, and I understand that discussing politics successfully means starting from a place of *respect*, as politics is inherently a somewhat intimate topic. It often involves topics that can easily become emotionally charged, by definition.

I’m not a king. I don’t even own this board. That’s @Joe.

We just want it to be a place that remains fun, useful, respectful, entertaining, and positive. If people keep discussions calm and as described above, you won’t find us deleting anything.

But if people give us a reason to delete posts, we will; this board doesn’t exist to serve politics, or to please any one individual who wants to discuss politics here.

Have respectful discussions, and everything will be hunky-dory. Otherwise, there’s X. Have at it.

(But yes, off-topic exists for this reason now, with the caveat that it gets less traffic)

Can this be applied to husband/wife relationship?
If so, a few jokes are generating in my head right now.

It definitely could. I could be totally wrong about this, but my guess is that most of the jokes you're thinking of would not be ones that should be posted on this forum.

No jokes then.
I told a few of them to my wife as a test drive .
Well, I'm in a recovery mode now, still hurting :)

Might be in the recovery wing at a hospital… if they are any of the jokes I was thinking of!
