My preference is to use my phone as a mobile key. It works, but not smoothly. Sometimes quick. Sometimes delayed. Sometimes not until I open the app and wake the car.

Can any experienced users give advice on what they have found to be the optimal way to use the mobile key? Approach from a certain direction? Always push the handle? Open the app before approaching car? Reboot the car? Get my Tesla back?

I have firmware version 2.0.28 so should be up-to-date.

Thank you!

P.S. "I prefer to use the fob because it's small/light/cute/sporty" is not a helpful response. ;)

Mine has been generally flawless. When the handles don’t present, just push them in once. It’s maybe one out of every 30 or 40 times now that I’ll have to pull out my phone and open the app.

Same

My Bluetooth mobile key has also been flawless -- sometimes it works too well where I only mean to go outside to let the dogs out, but it unlocks and wakes from 20ft away.

So flawless means you set it up using all the defaults and now you just walk up anywhere anytime and handles present before you get there? You don't have to wait or anything?

For me it typically reveals the handles as Im walking up, but every now if I walk up to the car faster than it can think, Ill need to press in the handle if im feeling impatient. Otherwise the handles still reveal themselves if I wait a few seconds.

All default settings and not doing anything special. I also use an iPhone.

Are you using an android phone? Some android phones can be very aggressive in their device sleep states, causing Bluetooth connection delays.

I have an iPhone. Mine is hit or miss. Sometimes it’s quick but other times I have to push the handle 2 or 3 times.

I tried using just my phone instead of the fob, and found one use case did work perfectly, and another use case was unacceptable.
Walking up to a door, it always presented the handles by the time I got there. But if approached from the back of the car and tried to open the trunk, it often would take 20-30 seconds before it would allow me to open the trunk. This is unacceptible when I'm holding grocery bags. It looked silly for me to walk to the back of the car, then around to the drivers door and back to the trunk while carrying my bags. So I gave up and carry the fob.

I’m about ready to drive my car into one of the many canals here in South Florida because of this horrible key situation. I‘m in the camp of sometimes it works but most often, it doesn’t. I generally have to get my phone out of my pocket, wave it around, hoping that works (32.7% of the time) and if not, open the app. It sucks when it’s raining and you have bags in both hands, or the other day, a heavy box which I had to set on the wet ground in heavy rain while opening the app to get the damn car to unlock. For those that have no or few problems, consider yourselves very fortunate because this has been a 11 month nightmare, as far as the phone or fob are concerned.

Question I suppose along the same lines - After 2.0.28 I realize that it asks for me to enter a PIN to drive every single time! Previously it was random at worst, now its just every single time I step into the car. Interestingly, if I happen to fire up the Lucid app before entering the PIN, the request goes away and when I close the app, the PIN request is back again. Solutions?

I would suggest completely removing and adding back your mobile key.

I noticed today that the Lucid app has pretty good info on how to ensure your mobile key is set up properly, especially with the location settings, which would directly impact the accuracy and responsiveness of your mobile key:

after 2.0.25 this issue seemed to have been improved. The car recognizes my phone sooner than before but NOT always. I believe a delay is more likely to occur the longer the car is sleeping per the zzzz's in the App. If you open the App before getting ready to go to the car, the car will change from sleeping to parked and your doors should open in time. Try that.

Mine is pretty spotty. I pushed in handle and they do not do anything. My fob works well so I use it more now.

My issue with the mobile key is that it wakes/unlocks my car far more than I would like (talked about by others). I have my iphone with me all the times- I may have a problem but that would be a different forum. I walk through my garage frequently and the car unlocks. I work from home and my office shares a wall with my garage. I literally sit 6 feet from my car all day long. I had not thought about it until now but my car may have been waking each time I walked into my office. At any rate, thanks to comments from you guys/gals I found in another thread I discovered the mobile key, with the exception of setting it up, is a separate animal from the mobile app. The solution to my problem was simply unlinking/removing my mobile key. It may have been obvious to many (but not to me) that the mobile app does not require the mobile key. I can now just use my key fob for lock/unlock or explicitly select lock/unlock from the mobile app. Having said all that, it would be sweet to have a configurable 'active / passive' mode for the mobile key such that if it is in 'passive' mode, you must press the door handle or trunk button for access or 'active' for the way it works now. This would address the undesired unlocks. Apologies if someone has already suggested this and I missed it.

There is a long list of customization features on the wish list. You’re not alone in wanting a mode that requires a door handle press.

Agree. I hope Lucid starts to allow more preferences/settings per user.

I have the same issue as @doon . My car unlocks every time I'm near it with my iPhone and I can drive the car using the phone as a key. This seems like a good feature except that I have the phone with me most of the time so the car wakes up every time I walk into my garage. That's a minor problem but I more concerned that the phone wakes up the car even when the phone is locked, so the problem is one of security. If I lose my phone or it is stolen, anyone who has the iPhone can open and drive away with the car. Is this a concern for others?

Not really different from losing your key fob, is it?

Actually, it’s better than losing your fob, because the crook can’t just keep tapping on the lock button to honk the horn and find your car.

The thief would have to know your mobile phone was set up as a key. And then they’d have to get within 30 feet of your car. Which assumes they know approximately where you parked.

Honestly, if I lost my phone, I’d be more worried about replacing the phone than anything else. Pain in the butt.

Also, assuming you have an iPhone: make sure you set up Find My on that phone. That way, if you do lose it, or it gets stolen, you can use another computer to set the phone into recovery mode. That will shut down all Bluetooth communication and ensure the phone is auto-erased if the thief attempts to unlock it.
