So I was at an Airbnb, driving from it to my house, along Skyline Dr - one of my favorite fun twisty roads. On the way home to bake bread, zero issues. Had a blast.

Two hours later, turned a corner and massive rockslide where there wasn’t one on my way out on the same road. I hit it pretty hard, and am going to have both my right wheels refinished. The tires got pretty torn up, but held up completely.

I just had it checked out by America’s Tire, pumped up to 60psi, did the dunk test and inspect both interior and exterior visually, and zero leaks or bubbles.

I don’t know, maybe a tire fairy follows me around. But how anyone is able to pop 8-10 of these things is completely beyond me. I know it happens. I know nobody is lying. I just, genuinely, do not understand it. If anything should have popped these tires, it was this rockslide. (The car handled like a champ, btw - I was in Sprint and it was very compliant; zero damage to the vehicle itself other than the wheels and tires)

In case you’re wondering, I do have the tire certs, so even if they had popped or leaked I’d get them replaced, but nevertheless, there’s nothing to replace. They’re fine, aside from some cosmetic damage.

Also, 18k miles in and the fronts are at 6/32” and the backs are at 5/32”. So plenty of tire life left, too.

Last pic, since I was limited to 10. First six are back right wheel. Next 5 are front right.

Interesting how you temporarily turned into @blueice89 during that rockslide... 🤣 Glad you and the car are okay!

If you knew, what PSI were the tires at before you hit the rocks? Also, although the tread is fine, I'd say the sidewalls are a... "bit" beat up, lol. Would it be advisable to replace them, or rather to just continue with the same tires?

I pretty religiously keep mine at 42, but if I’m being honest they were actually a bit low. They were at 39-40 or so cold right now because I hadn’t filled them in a while. So when I hit the rockslide, probably 42-43 because they were warm by then.

Also, although the tread is fine, wouldn't you say the sidewalls are a... "bit" beat up? Would it be advisable to replace them, or rather to just continue with the same tires?
Yeah, they’re obviously beat up. I considered replacing them, but then they’d have uneven wear with the rest of the car, and I don’t want to replace all four tires when they’ve got half-ish of their life left.

The sidewall “buffer” did its job in protecting the rim as best it could, and so yeah technically I could curb them easier now. But that buffer was so minimal anyway I’m not worried about the loss.

As to the tires - that was what all the testing was for. If I see any bubbles forming, or if it starts losing air, I’ll get them replaced. But for now AT wouldn’t replace them for free because, well, there’s not actually anything wrong with them. I see no reason to spend the money to pre-emptively replace it myself.

Got them refinished. They look almost brand new.

Wow, that must have been frightening!

Where did you get the refinished? They look great.
Yeah, I was really really impressed given how bad the damage was. And he got 3 wheels done in about an hour. The next closest place that had a refinishing machine (he refinishes by hand) both cost more and quoted me 6-8 hours.

Highly recommend him. He was a recommendation from @SaratogaLefty (and other folks) and they will come out to you for a fee also; otherwise, his home shop is in Morgan Hill.

If you text them photos, they'll respond with whether they think they can repair it and what the cost would be.

Hum. My left front 21" tire has popped for the second time. No one has replacement tires in stock as they are on back order with Pirelli. Fortunately it happened just before arriving home, so I was not stranded anywhere and the car is safely at home. I have to say Lucid has been great. Once informed, they quickly got me a rental car within the hour, and scheduled the vehicle for a tow to Costa Mesa from San Diego, while we wait for tire availability, and the opportunity to fix a frunk issue while we wait.

Informed today, they got 4 tires in at Costa Mesa today, and one is set aside for me. Hopefully, have the vehicle back early next week.

Yeah, the rears are available but the fronts are backordered. How did you pop this one? And same tire both times, huh? You storing a pile of bricks in the frunk by any chance? haha

Yep, plenty of rears available. Not sure how this one popped, partner was driving, heard a pop and then completely flat. I guess, my left front is cursed. This is a replacement tire, installed last December. No bodies or bricks in the frunk 😄

Well, there weren't any bodies or bricks in the frunk, but given that it was your partner driving... is that still the case? :p

First of all, I’m glad you and the car (for the most part) are okay. Secondly, they did a great job refinishing your rims!

Unfortunately, I have popped one tire (first of my life) by running over a couple of these guys coming out a round about:

I didn’t expect my first tire pop to be on one of these “botts dots” but that’s what did it for me. Had to replace the rim as well. Hoping to not make that a common occurrence though.

Wait, what? I've driven over those thousands of times. What the hell happened to your rim that it got bent on one of those? What PSI were you at?

I'm genuinely flabbergasted. I believe you, of course - I just ... I don't understand. haha

This happened probably about 3 months ago. I was on my way back from a spring training game that we took some clients out to. There was a wreck on the highway so I decided to go through the one of the many reservations here in Scottsdale. When I tell you there’s nothing out there, I mean there’s nothing out there.

I don’t remember the exact PSI but probably 40-45 PSI. I remember taking the round about a little wide but within the lane until I came out of the round about which at that point I hit probably 3-4 in a row. I was going 45 in a 35 so my fault there as well. I remember feeling the car bounce over each one and then hearing a slam. My dash lights came on and I realized what had happened but I was barely at the exit of the round about so I knew I had to get my car to the side of the road. Got out and yup the tire was completely shredded. My back passenger tire was perfect though. The rim visually didn’t look bad but after lucid inspected it they said it was bent enough to require a replacement. I have the rim in my garage, I’ll take a picture of it. It doesn’t look bad honestly.

What… how is it even physically possible to pop a tire on that? Genuinely confused! What speed were you going?

Don't you drive over those every time you change lanes on some highways?
