2 front tires blew when hitting potholes.

I just bent my driver's side front 21" stealth rim over the weekend after hitting a pothole. I had just swapped them back on a couple of weeks ago from my winter 19" wheels. The SC just replaced it with a new wheel today. The tire itself was fine, however!

Anyway, that's the chance you take with 21's... but they look awesome. 😁

Looks aside, I found the 20's to be a good compromise. I swapped out my 21's to the 20's when I had the chance and haven't had an issue since. Potholes on side streets are easy to avoid, its the ones of the freeways that A) are often hard to see (especially at night) B) not exactly safe to swerve at 70mph to avoid it when you do eventually see it. You'll have less stress on the 20's :)

The idea of keeping the tires hard to prevent punctures come from road cycling.
The skinny road-bike tires needed to be kept at maximum inflation ( 110-120 psi ) or you'd get a puncture on any rough surface.

What's a closer comparison, skinny road-bicycle tires or off-roading jeep style tires? Your guess is as good as mine.

I'm inclined to think that overinflating the Lucid 21 tires may be better for protecting the wheels, but more likely to damage the tires. But going with slightly lower pressure for the tires would allow the tires to survive a pothole hit better at the risk of potentially damaging the wheels. So maybe just split the difference and go with the recommended tire pressure? :)

Hey, and it was nice chatting with you at the SC while we waited!

Cost of a new tire vs a new wheel? No brainer. I'll keep my tires at 45 psi. And I do have the replacement certificates from America's Tires anyway.

The problem with the "just don't hit the potholes" advice is most of the times it happened to me I could not see them until it was too late without making a very dangerous maneuver at highway speed. A few times it was During a lane change. At 60-80MPH, reaction time for about 10 car lengths is about one second.
Yes, sometimes it’s unavoidable and you just do your best. At those moments it’s all just about luck. I try not to have many of those moments. I can’t remember when I last actually hit a pothole.

Low profile tires may be lovely in California, Chicago not so much. We have Grand Canyon sized potholes.
Agreed. I wouldn’t buy the 21s in Chicago.
