  • Install high-powered breaker and wires (up to 100A) and run wires into junction box/sub-panel in garage or near vehicle. From junction box/sub-panel, run smaller gauge wires as appropriate, which can be landed in a 14-50 outlet. Once you are ready to install Lucid Connected Home Charging System(LCHCS), have a electrician remove outlet, smaller wires and junction box or sub-panel, allowing the main wire to run from the panel to the station directly.
The included Lucid Mobile Charging Cable is limited to delivering 40A to the vehicle (breakers are usually approx. 20% from the current they deliver for safety reasons). A licensed electrician will know this and be able to properly wire in the NEMA 14-50 needed with the above instructions.

I hope this helps, Should you have further questions, please do not hesitate to contact us, as we, in Customer Service, are available 24/7. Thank you

Ah, hydbob, since you have a contact in Customer Service could you perhaps ask about UV and IR filtering specs for the car's side windows?

Oh yea, sure will do.

This confirms what I had planned on doing. Will need to see whether a terminal block is needed or can just use a connector to change wire size for the 14-50 plug. I know you can from 12-2 to 14-2. I'm hoping can just modify cover to junction box to fit plug. Less holes in the garage wall. Box covers are cheap.

Has anybody who has the new Dream Edition know how to do the bidirectional charging so that the Lucid can power a house if the power goes out.

It's not available yet and most likely will need their wall charger to have that capability

Bidirectional charging will likely require the circuit breaker to be in the bottom slot of your panel. Does anyone know if can be used in grid interactive mode for peak shaving and also for backup which would require a transfer switch.

If you have space I'd have a sub-panel installed adjacent to your main panel. If it's mounted close enough they can use a knock-out on the side of each box. Make sure it can accommodate a 200a sub panel. Then run the 100a service from here. Lucid hasn't released any info but there has to be a automatic transfer switch installed at your sub panel. You can't back feed a panel. Transfer switch should be between utility and main panel. I'm not an electrician but have had a generator installed.

This is what they got back to me with...

Thank you for your patience while we researched for an answer to your question regarding UV and IR filtering on the windows.

Here is some information we gathered:

Our glass PVB blocks 99% UV. The Ag3 coating reflects IR, a major contributor of heat which results in Total Solar Energy Rejection (TSER) of about 54%.

I hope this answers your question and thank you for reaching out to our Customer Care team. We value your feedback and questions as it helps us better ourselves as well.

Warm wishes,

I wrote back to clarify if that was for the glass canopy or windows or both

Okay got clarification on windows...

Thank you for reaching out. My name is Breno with the Customer Care team. The information regarding the UV and IR filtering specs apply to all windows and glass canopy.

So, I am happy to share that all “our glass has PVB blocks 99% UV. The Ag3 coating reflects IR, a major contributor of heat which results in Total Solar Energy Rejection (TSER) of about 54%".

Factory windows are better species than the XPEL XR Plus 70...pretty good imo

Thanks @hydbob for posting this. We're now going to get a new subpanel installed in the garage with 100A service rather than a NEMA 14-50 line. Good advice. The electrician didn't know how the car as power supply was going to work, but everyone's short on details right now. Sounds like a transfer switch will be needed.

Has anyone contacted Qmerit, the company Lucid recommends for doing electrical work? I went through their extensive form, including pictures of the electric panels and job site. The form ends with any other information your want to provide for the quote. I mentioned that we had a 50 amp outlet on the right garage wall, but wanted to set up the left wall for a 50amp, 240V outlet now, but prepped for the Lucid bidirectional V2H EVSE. I stated that perhaps they could tell me how that should be done. They pinged back a quote immediately for $799 plus permit fees. No scope of work was listed. No mention about anything they were going to do. No answering questions (they had not time to actually answer questions). Just asked for $149 to continue. Never have I ever received a quote for only a dollar amount and no a single mention about what I was going to receive for that quote. Does this sound strange to you? Has anyone actually used them yet?

I know they’re an “official” partner to some EV companies, but that and $5 will get you a cup of coffee these days. I read on another EV forum that they will get you a few quotes, and they’ll all be ridiculous. So, I didn’t bother, as I didn’t want to throw away $150.

The $149 is refundable, and they did get me two quotes. Their quotes were expensive, admittedly, but also the most legitimate of any of the quotes I received (I didn’t have to teach them what the goddamn code was when it came to EV installs, and they didn’t complain to me that “the job was too small” to apply for a permit, which we definitely needed).

YMMV, but it worked out for me.

What *was* unclear though, is that after you pay the $149 deposit is when you sign terms and conditions and then get the quotes in a few days (along with calls and/or video / on-site quotes). Before you pay the $149 and agree to the terms you won’t get any actual quotes, just a price range.

The contractor I ended up choosing (EVXperts / Willow Glen Electric) worked out a plan I was super happy with, installed quickly, and went back and forth with me a lot on what I wanted to do. But they weren’t the cheapest. Also, the $149 applies to the job if you choose a QMerit contractor, and bear in mind the 30% federal credit for EV charger installation through the end of 2021 (up to $1k, not including permit and inspection fees).

Are you located in the San Jose area? if so, can I ask the name of the electrician you dealt with please?

Mentioned it in my comment: EVXperts (which is owned by Willow Glen Electric)

What did you have to do to get the $1000 federal credit? Is this a credit when you file your tax return like the $7500 new EV tax credit?

From what I understand, it's 30% of a charger + installation costs up to $1,000.
