NACS Megathread

They’re legacy. Some older sites still have them and newer ones don’t.

The Snake Road Supercharger location is just a little over a year old. It's also one of the few charging locations in an open lot that also has a roof covered in solar panels over it.

I'm surprised it would have these signs and that Tesla would leave them up at any NACS-partner station. Many Tesla owners will not be aware of the NACS partnerships, and those signs could be a source of friction of even confrontation. Some of the Superchargers, especially around Miami, often have queues of cars waiting to charge, and a Tesla owner seeing a non-Tesla plugged in at a post with a sign saying it's for Teslas only could become quite irritated. That could make for a dicey situation . . . especially around Miami.

My guess is yes because every manufacturer is already swapping to the format. It's still so far a net positive, even if Tesla starts switching sites off.
Other charging networks are adding NACS handles too, so even if Tesla suddenly pulled a knee jerk backtrack (which wouldn't make sense because it's significant revenue), Ionna and others will make the switch worthwhile in the long run.

He said he tried two other charge posts and got the same result. There is a 24-station Tesla Supercharger plaza near his house, and he has used that a couple of times successfully, as has another friend also with a Volvo XC30. They finally made it to his cousin's house with 16 miles of range left. He's took his cousin's car home tonight as his wife was waiting dinner on him and will return tomorrow to try the nearby Target store which has both a NACS-partner Supercharger station as well as a bank of Florida Power & Light CCS chargers.

I had seen your earlier posts about the reliability you're seeing with Superchargers and was starting to feel optimistic about this. But his experience tonight and the experiences you just posted from others seem to reflect a hit-and-miss situation even with Tesla Superchargers similar to our CCS experiences.

For now, I'll just hope that Lucid is doing something right in utilizing the Tesla infrastructure that Volvo and other manufacturers haven't yet quite nailed.
According to Volvo, the EX30 is not compatible with North American Tesla superchargers at this time. Volvo's other models are compatible. I've charged our XC40 at several supercharger locations with zero issues.

The XC30 was enabled a few weeks back. Volvo would not provide an adapter to either friend at the time they leased their cars for the reason you state. However, the local Volvo dealer was finally able to provide both my friends with the adapters, and they have both successfully used Tesla Superchargers at the giant Tesla charging plaza at Miramar Outlets mall in Ft. Myers, FL. That is why my friend was comfortable with relying on the NACS-partner site yesterday.

In light of @HC_79's post last night, I see that I overreacted to the Snake Road charging attempt failure. Sad to say, after almost ten years of owning two Teslas, it's become a company that triggers me in several ways. I've just seen enough stunts from them that I always suspect the worst.

Both these XC30 owners now know they need to plan for a CCS backup if they're on a road trip until they know more about what's going on with NACS charging.

We're going to make our first attempt to charge our Gravity at a Supercharger today when we transfer the car from the PPF shop to the radar installer. Fingers crossed, because a big reason for adding Gravities to our Lucid stable was to be able to break dependence on the CCS infrastructure on road trips. It seems from other posts on the forum that Lucid might have cracked the code on using Superchargers seamlessly, perhaps because the car was engineered for native NACS charging. Fingers crossed.

Will the Gravity L3 adapter work with the Air?

Here's a tip.
  • Many (perhaps all?) of the 350 kWh stations have this new design that lets us pull in normally. See photo below.
  • Otherwise, if you choose a 250 kWh station try to find a large facility so that it doesn't matter that you have to take up two stalls to get the short cable to reach. See Wheeler Ridge photo below. I see several Rivians charging there every time I go through. You know how they like to park diagonally across two spaces? You know, 'cause they're Rivians. And no one cares because there are so many stalls.
  • At holiday time, you're not going to want to take up 2 spaces at a 6-stall location.

"kW" is the rate that the station delivers power. "kWh" is a measure of energy: power accumulated over time, for example, how much energy is in your car's battery.

Charging stations are rated in kW for the power they can deliver. Car batteries are rated in kWh for the total energy they can store. Kilowatts of power multiplied by hours of time.

Looks like no free adaptors from Lucid. News on Lucid site quotes $220. I am surprised. Perhaps due to the 50 kW limit they don't expect much use.

Is the Air charging limit 50kW at all Tesla Superchargers?
Yes. It's a limitation of the Wunderbox in the Air that has to step up 400-500v chargers (like Superchargers) to 900V that the Air battery pack uses.

Currently all Tesla V3 and V4 chargers are only 400-500v. The V4 stands are technically capable of 1000v but they're still all powered by V3 cabinets in the US thus have the same voltage. They're effectively V3's with longer cords.

I'm happy with the 50KW from nacs chargers, it's 50 KW more than I expected when I bought the car 3 years ago.

I had a very bad experience recently at the Harris Ranch EA chargers. One nitwit in a lightning at 96% and a complete idiot in an ID4 at 94% that felt it was his right to get his full 100%. Meanwhile nearby Tesla chargers sat empty. I would have been thrilled to plug into 50 KW for 30-45 minutes instead of waiting for those 2 morons.

Guys, Zak confirmed on Twitter for me about 2 hours ago that the NACS adapter is now available in the rewards store. I just redeemed some points for it.

Let me just say, I'm floored -- in the best way possible -- at how quickly he responded after I tweeted him last night!

Yeah, not much reason to blanketly send them to everyone for free when few would actually use it.
Maybe not blankety send them, but given Lucid is high end, and other manufacturers have sent out free adaptors, I think they could have made it free on request. It would have been a nice node to their early customers. An adaptor for us early adaptors.

Yeah, and I think a bunch of us had already purchased the adaptor from Lectron, too.
