Gravity [Dream Edition] Reservations Tracker

If anyone changed to the 20"/21" wheels and having trouble editing your response, just let me know.

Was anyone else told that your deposit becomes non-refundable when you switch to the DE? Not that it's a big deal, but I have not seen this written down anywhere. Studio rep said this today when we talked.

I think the big differences between the small and mid-size wheels have more to do with the tires than with the wheel sizes. (And remember that all the tires, no matter what the wheel choice, have the same tread width.)

In objective testing done by Tire Rack and several other outfits, the Hankooks on the small wheels are far and away the most efficient EV tires on the market, which is why their range on the Lucid is so much more than with the other two wheel options (and probably why Lucid chose them). However, that efficiency comes at a stiff price in wet handling. Dry handling seems okay, but the same tire tests that rate their efficiency so highly rate their wet handling capability smack dab at the bottom. Tire Rack goes so far as to call it a "challenge". There are also reports from users that they are prone to hydroplaning.

The Primacy Tour AS tires on the mid-size wheels give up something in efficiency but handle well over a wider range of conditions.

Given that most reviews have reported that the Gravity air suspension allows a very compliant ride even on the largest wheels, I really doubt whether you'd see a lot of ride advantage from the small wheels over the mid-size wheels.

Here's what Tire Rack had to say:

Here you see how efficient the Hankooks are, though. (Note that the max performance summer Pirellis that come on the largest wheels are also quite efficient.)

And here you see how the Hankooks fared in wet handling tests:

Keep in mind those are not the SUV tire so could be same or different.

Unfortunately, tire tests are almost never done using SUVs or similarly-sized vehicles, so about the best you can do in comparing tires is to assume the relative performances of the tested tires more or less hold as you increase the size and weight of the vehicles. They may well not in some regards, but I doubt that it would meaningfully shift the relative rankings on most metrics.

What is interesting is that the Hankook website claims the Ion EVO's wet braking and wet lateral grip are above the "average of premium competitors". In fact, this is far from the actual "average of premium competitors." They derived their "average" from cherry picking only three other tires, two of which score particularly low in these metrics in independent tire tests. The tires that have tested best on these metrics in independent tests were notably excluded from this average. It leaves me with something of an oily feeling about Hankook's deceptive marketing.

I was a little perplexed when Kyle Conner said in his Gravity test drive video that the Hankooks were getting really good reviews, as I had not seen any such reviews. In fact, more the opposite. But looking at the Hankook website I now see where he might have looked to get the impression that the Hankooks were top performers. The only category in which they really shine is efficiency. Lucid gave up a lot of other tire performance metrics to pick probably the only tire that could have gotten the Gravity EPA rating above 400 miles.

Personally, the more I look at the Hankook Ion EVO, the more I conclude I wouldn't have it on anything I drive.

Will the Gravity GTs come out of production first or the Gravity Dream edition?

After rechecking my notes, I should amend the above statement. All three of the "premium competitors" Hankook used to calculate the average were tires that have been found by independent reviewers to come up particularly short in wet handling and braking.

I ended up still going for the GT. Since my Air still has 17 months on the lease, it would be a waste to just pay that off. Besides, I love driving it!

So the Gravity will be for my wife. We will sell her mercedes (she agreed!!). So she chose the GT because she does not want more power and the few extra miles of range is a plus. Its a fully loaded GT, except she chose the five seater option as we never have 7 people to drive around.

I cant wait for the Gravity!

What is the difference other than the price? I am ordering a GGT as well.

242 more horsepower due to a more powerful front motor and some different badging for sure, and maybe a couple of extra-cost accessories thrown in for good measure.

So DE version of Gravity is 1070 hp (242 more than 828)? Wow, sign me up! Heading over to Denver to test drive late spring and then order a Gravy GT or DE. WIll check if my wife and two dogs likes it.
