WINDSHIELD REFLECTIONS ( Dash & HUD)

I’m still waiting for my vehicle but have researched the sh*t out of this. I know people will mock me but per ChatGBT, it’s confident the reflection is coming from this area. For $20, worth a try.

Not mocking but it's confidently wrong in this case. Yes, the inside of the frame reflects but if you look at the picture I posted you can clearly see the top part of the frame is reflecting as much/more than the inside edges.

I agree, it’s the top part of the frame I’m seeing in the reflection on the window.

Yes. I’ve questioned this but the response was that it is the top part of the frame that’s being reflected and that’s why the fix still works. You’re not blocking the reflection directly. You’re eliminating the light source that creates the reflection. Even if the frame is what you see, it is not what’s being illuminated directly. You can quickly test with painters tape or black cloth. If it works, then this will work.

As a photographer and someone very familiar with light I'm going to say I don't believe that to be the case at all. The reflections are a result of outside lighting hitting the top of the frame. With light the angle of a reflection is equal to the angle of incidence (the angle where the originating light is coming from). I can't see how the inside of the frame would effect the reflection of the outside part of the frame at all.

This is actually how many HUDs even work in the first place. The projector is situated in a way where it hits the glass at an angle of incidence that will bounce the light towards the driver (angle of reflection). There's a few more tricks added to focus the image and/or give it a perception of being outside the glass but that's the basic principle of how many work.

Okay. Like I said, it’s a possible solution, not a definite one, and also one that can be easily tested in under five min. If I had my Gravity, I’d give it a try. I also didn’t have to post anything about it either but figured I’d try to offer a potential solution because I’ve been worrying/thinking about it.

I went to take some measurements of the HUD frame. Frustratingly, there’s not a straight line or flat surface on it. It actually has a lot of curves. The overall shape is roughly 17.5” wide x 16.5” deep. I’m going to try and order a large flock piece and cut it. I initially thought I’d measure it and cut it, but I think given the odd shape it’s better to trace a template and transfer it to the back of the sheet of flock. My PPF installer could probably do this in 1//10 the time I could.

Lucid could produce a template of this frame from their CAD drawings lickety-split.

We do appreciate your input. I’ll be ordering a piece 1-2” flock tape to give it a try. That’s certainly a lot easier than trying to flock the whole frame. When do you get your Gravity?

I placed my order last week so probably not for a while but who knows. I’m hoping one appears in inventory, which hasn’t been great. I’m trying to have the attitude of whenever it comes, it comes. In the meantime, maybe Apple CarPlay and Paak will be introduced, and they’ll figure out this glare issue.

I highly recommend that you test drive a Gravity with a HUD to see if this would really be an issue. Is there a reflection - yes, virtually any car with a HUD is going to have some type of reflection. The vast majority of drivers (like myself) just tune out this reflection and their eyes focus down road. But some OCD types fall in the “once you see it, you can’t unsee it.” I highly doubt Lucid is going to do anything about this in the short term (or maybe even long term), as it will depend on how many people are complaining. If after test drive you determine this is something that is really going to bother you, then maybe delete this from your order. Honestly, right now, without the promised “augmented reality” features that were promised, this HUD is overpriced and who knows how long it is going to take for those special features to drop.

For me - do I wish there was less of a reflection - yes, does it bother me enough to go through flocking tape retrofits - no. Also, if someone wants to do this right, use Alcantara and not flocking tape.

I ordered an assortment of flock tape and one flock sheet from Amazon. I also ordered a roll of Alcantara based on your suggestion, which would certainly be nicer and look more luxurious, but I think that could still show a reflection. Alcantara shows brush marks similar to suede. My PPF guy nixed the black matt PPF because he said it wouldn’t be much better than the gray frame. I think the Alcantara would be similar. That’s when he mentioned the black flock, which is what race car drivers put on their dash to elimate reflections.

The reflection is particularly bad in bright sunlight. It’s non-existent at night. I could live with it, but I prefer to fix if for $20 bucks. Lucid did so well with the rest of the car (other than the software), having anything that distracting in the field of vision of the driver is really an engineering and safety failure.

As Matt Damon said in The Martian “let’s engineer the shit out of this.”

I may have found a solution and working on obtaining the material so it can be cut to size and cover the frame of the HUD and frame of the gird vent center. I will upload two sample photos of the material. One is light gray and the other darker. The darker works like polarize sunglasses for the dashboard. The light material is completely clear not reflections from either.

I’m test driving it next weekend at KoP. Took me a bit to find a place that had one to test drive. I’m getting it more for the dynamic lighting. Funny, to your point, I never noticed the HUD reflection in my Volvo because I wear polarized sunglasses but it’s there if I take them off. It kind of is what it is. Doesn’t really bother me but then again, I rarely ever drive without my sunglasses.

Do you still see it with sunglasses on?

The Lucid HUD disappears with polarized sunglasses, which evidently doesn’t happen with Porsche or other German cars because they’ve figured out how to position the HUD opposite the polarization of common sunglasses. See page 4 of this thread. There’s some polarized sunglasses mentioned that apparently work.

Sorry. I meant does the glare disappear?

Crazy. The HUD glare is completely gone in my Volvo with shades on.

@RLead8 @RandomDesign @ClearlyLucid You are all partially right. Reflections are coming from both the inside sides the frame as well as from the top surface of the frame. It all depends on the angle of the sun. @RandomDesign even in your own pictures, the right hand side of the HUD reflection is coming from the inside side of the frame. I’m adding my own picture where you can clearly see the reflection is from both inside and top surface (at the top of the HUD reflection).

The discussion was about putting a light blocking material only on the insides of the frame and whether or not that would eliminate the reflection entirely. Even in your picture most of your reflection is the outside/top part of the frame. Even the top of the reflection you talk about (the bottom of the frame when looking down at it) is a reflection of the outside part of the frame (that entire top left corner) that wouldn't be covered by the template that was posted earlier in the thread.

Based on this pic I would say most of the reflection is from the top of the frame, although I agree it probably depends on the angle of the sun. My flock/Alcantara material is arriving tomorrow morning. Sunday is supposed to to be sunny. I’ll try and post some pics of the experiment.
