WINDSHIELD REFLECTIONS ( Dash & HUD)

Gabbed this picture on an overcast day:

You can see why the HUD reflects so much - it's brighter than the white paper on the dash!

OTOH, FWIW, our lighting settings seem to be retained per driver profile. Weird, eh?

for comparison sake, here's a Range Rover HUD. notice it's black, which I assume is some kind of polarizing filter.

I do like the ambient lighting a lot (hopefully they can find a way to fix it so it holds your selection and to make it dynamic as promised) and I find the HUD (although super basic) useful for navigation. Someone here suggested a setting to have it turned on automatically during navigation only, I think that would be a good compromise (oh, I forgot this is the "compromise nothing" brand 🤣)
Do you have the fabric installed? Do you notice an obnoxious/unbearable glare?

I don’t notice any glare on my XC90. I don’t even care about the HUD being blurry in the interim, assuming it can be fixed at some point. I’ll just turn it off. I am concerned with a constant glare even if turned off.

Surprisingly I don't have any unbearable glare, but I haven't gone through a summer with it yet. I'll have to look closer, but I don't see any fabric inside or around the device.

Thanks for the reply. So stupid this is even a thing (like why wasn’t this tested?)

I noticed while charging that the lighting subtly pulses. And, of course, Sanctuary Mode has a variety of animations.

Drivers, Windshields and HUD signal and noise.

Cars have dark dashes to limit dash reflection ghosts in the windshield. All cars have light conditions that cause visible reflections of dash. Chrome, vents, contrasting stitching and shadows from multilevel dashes and even varying dash surface textures project project.

On the small HUD projector on my son’s S class MB, the only reflection on the windshield was the HUD projected data. I call this a noticeable ‘signal’ imposed on the signals of the relevant view of the road and its surroundings. There was no other visual from the HUD. No ‘noise’.

In the early Dream Edition iteration of HUD there I saw a light white ‘greyed’ rectangle reflection ie a very consistent reflection of the larger projector surface. I assume ( usually not a good thing) that physical warping distorted this rectangle into the ‘orb ghosts’ that others saw.

On a recent build Gravity with HUD (I did not sit in but looked at through a n open side window) It was clear that the frame of the HUD was very clear sharply and it seemed unavoidably projected on the windshield. I could not tell if the screen projection partially ‘greyed’ the large rectangular shape inside that frame.

I categorized all of this, the greyed rectangle and even the visible frame as visual ‘noise’. Noise that your brain ‘filters’.

Interested in learning just how much secondary reflection persists in the recently delivered HUDs.

Note: a common Neurosensory phenomena for humans, signal to noise filtering declines as we age. (that is the reason many hearing aids are abandoned to a life in the patient’s dresser draw.)

And yes, I am old ( but have not yet retired my hearing aids to li in a drawer).

The heads up display has a real window reflection problem. It shows a distracting shadow of its framing in sunlight and cloudy day. It makes it look like looking through a dark window frame that keeps moving around destroys your field of view and never goes away unless at night. We never use it so whether on or off it still has a terribly distracting frame reflecting in the view. The only way to remove it is by making a special cover for the dashboard that is dark fuzz like low pile black carpet to fit over the entire heads up display and the frame around it. Also the metal framing of the air vent on the dash for the defroster show a deep shadow in the center of the windshield that needs the frame to be covered with the same material to reduce the glare. At least the defroster vent is not in the field of view and it is low in the reflection on the windshield but still distracting. The head up display mirror reflects a blue moving aura circle that is directly in the field of view when heading into the sun. The whole unit is a disaster of design and should not be made. Even its display is fuzzy, cannot move it low enough and no left or right adjustment. I will fix mine with a complete cover of non-reflective material over the entire dashboard.

What’s frustrating is some owners noting that this fabric is now coming factory installed fixing the issue, but I can’t get confirmation from the company.

Decision to skip tech pkg...CHECK!
Agree 100% that is why I posted this as a warning to others. But there is more to the story so here it is. I ordered it without the HUD. Did not want it. However, when I ordered I forgot to get the good sound option, so I went back to the sales office and asked to add the upgraded sound option. Here is the rub, the car was already in production no changes allowed. However, they did offer me any other car already in production if it has the upgrade sound. So I took that option. It also meant I had to spend more for the car as I was then compelled to pay for the Tech package with this car change. So I went for it. Got the new car but never test drove with the Tech pack and therefore could not notice the problems with the HUD display and framing reflection until I paid for and received the car. Now I am stuck with a feature I did not want and regret getting. So my fault, well yes and no. No because this problem is a structural engineering problem. Should not pay for an upgrade and have a defect with reflections. That part is a Lucid problem. So Yes skip the tech pkg. so also no, not all my fault for the decision.

Has anyone tried a DIY fix? Like maybe the black sticky velcro strips? Appears it it far enough out of view that it would not look too weird.

Now that would upset just about anyone: paying for something you didn't really want and then it sucks!.. and in your case, being extra mad at yourself for not taking the car as ordered and using that tech pkg money to upgrade the sound system at a car stereo shop.
Sorry bro. Too bad you didn't catch it before it went into production. :(

FWIW, I took an early test drive last summer and the studio had just covered the HUD with a black cloth, with the SA stating it wasn't currently working and needed some component they were waiting on or something, so I didn't notice any bothersome reflections on the windshield.
A prophetic foretelling no doubt...

I'd like to provide a counter opinion. I like the HUD and am glad to have gotten it. GDE delivered at the end of September. If I look for the frame reflection, I can see it, but that is at a very near focal point, so my brain filters it out. Our test drive did have the blue ovals, and our production car has them much less , and only in very particular sun angles. I think I have seen a small one once.

When they first updated the HUD to be vertically adjustable, I found that the adjustment didn't move the info display very much, but that there was a sweet spot where it was most visible. Above or below that and part of the display seemed to fade. I was puzzled as I didn't know how they would show things higher if that faded out when moved "up". But the blind spot warnings display fine (and I very much like them)..

Now, however (v3.3.20) there are 3 white bars that show up in that adjustment mode, a horizontal one at the bottom and a vertical one at top left and right sides. These show clearly, and I think it frames the space that will be used for the AR graphics.

My suspicion is that the up/down adjustment is an angle adjustment of the projector rather than a vertical position relative to the roadway.

Virtually any HUD is going to have a housing reflection issue of some type. No way to get around it. All HUDs I have used have it to some extent. Lucid could have maybe minimized it by having a simpler housing surround. I think that due to size of HUD, it becomes a little more noticeable then simple HUDs. Also, the guy complaining about the dash vent is just looking for things to complain about. Tons of cars now have upper dash vents and center channel speakers that cause some type of reflection. The vast majority of people focus down the road and their mind ignores these reflections. But for some, it falls into the “once you see it, you can’t unsee it” issue.

My biggest issue with HUD is that I paid a lot extra for this due to the “Augmented Reality features” that were promised. Currently this HUD is similar to other $600 HUDs and not the extra $2000 it cost. If these features show up in the next 2-3 months, than I’m a happy camper. If it take 2-3 years like Lucid took to deliver the promised DD Pro features on the Air, then I will be pissed.

This is becoming a typical trait of Lucid and it’s not a good look for them. They constantly over promise and under deliver and it often takes them years to deliver on those promises. They did it with DreamDrive Pro on the Air and now it looks like the HUD is going to follow a similar fate. No AR for over 12 months of producing vehicles and no hands-free DD Pro that was promised end of last year.

Car companies (not just Lucid) should be forced to legally refund on those options if they don’t deliver within a certain timeframe or they’ll just continue this bad behavior. As you mentioned, we saw on the Air that some people went through an entire lease period without promised features being delivered.

Lucid is becoming Tesla in this regard and taking advantage of people’s goodwill.

I was just thinking the same thing. I decided to do a lease on my Gravity so as not to be stuck with an incomplete car. On the other hand, I want to be reimbursed for the time the features I’m paying for are not functioning.

I agree with this counterpoint to the HUD reflections. Yes, it’s there and is annoying. However, every car I’ve driven has some reflections from the dash that can be bad depending on the sun angle. We get used to it and ignore it (but I agree Lucid should do more to minimize the reflections).

For those considering the HUD, it took a while to grow on me, but now that I’ve used it for a while, I like it and am glad I got it. The blind spot indicators on the HUD and navigation turn countdown are the “must have” features of the HUD that are particularly valuable.

I need to watch the road for unfamiliar turns and I love the countdown being directly on the road in my field of vision: 500 ft…450…400… …100…75…50…25…0 (I don’t remember seeing zero as I’m turning at this point).

More AR features such as lane outlining in the rain, infrared animal projection, etc. would have been nice and I’m hopeful Lucid will add that at some point with a software OTA update. I’m realistic enough to know that it may never come, though.
