Consumer Reports Reliabilty Rankings

Regardless of how you try to spin it, this is bad news for Lucid. You can slice it and dice it any way you want, but this is going to convince a fair number of people that Lucid produces unreliable cars. I was somewhat chagrined to see this rating, but went ahead, rolled the dice and ordered a Lucid. But I am retired and having to take a loss on a bad auto purchase decision isn't going to kill me. Car purchase decisions are a lot more crucial and stressful for most other people.

I’m sure you’ll love your Lucid. I don’t think they gave Lucid a fair shake. Would love to hear how much you love your Lucid when you receive it.

I have long been a subscriber to Consumer Reports but I rarely agree with their results. I have had various products that far out perform CR's reports. This is just one more example.

I'm seeing this as a lateral move from my e-tron GT. Some things will be better, some will be worse. I'm sure it will be a great car that is fun to drive. It won't be perfect, and how that manifests will dictate how great a car it is.

I do not subscribe to CR. I am not sure that its utility for consumers has kept pace with information available in a simple cost-free search for timely information. I will not rate the CR methodology and cannot address its review. I will assume that it is perfectly objective in its choices of model year and sample size. I only know that after over two years and 35k miles, my AGT, while not Porsche-perfect in panel fit, has been reliable and exceeds all the attributes I want in a large sedan. Lucid's customer service culture is commendable and at least comparable to my prior experience with mostly bulletproof Porsches, Audis, MBs, and BMWs. The OTAs have been impressive. If CR did not review OTAs it missed a major point about Lucid. Car choices are subjective and objective, clinical analyses probably do not address the aspects that informed auto buyers may want to know.

CR's reliability ratings are based on customer surveys. That means that the CR base of Lucid subscribers are the ones who gave it such a low rating. BUT...

The ratings don't ask about how important or how often a particular glitch can occur. So a Lucid owner reporting a software problem doesn't really have a good way to show that it was fixed in a later OTA release.

My problem with the reliability ratings of CR, as well as those of others like Edmunds, is that they don't differentiate critical problems from minor problems (to be fair a critical problem to me might be a minor problem to you and the reverse). But it nonetheless does reflect consumer ratings.

I would urge any CR members with Lucid to do the product surveys. That should get the rating way up.

They should also have a section about bugs introduced by OTA. That would be one popular section.

While I may get another Lucid at some point, my 2024 (now sold) was full of problems, ranging from fit and finish, entry problems and terrible glitchy software. I bought a BMW i4M50 and it is a terrific car. Zero problems after a year. Fit and finish are outstanding and the software, while not as advanced as a Tesla, is worlds better than my Lucid was.

As an aside, I recently visited Saudi Arabia and while I expected to see many Lucid vehicles there, I only saw one.

Thank you for your perspective. I did not know anything about the BMW until I saw your post, as I have been quite happy with my AGT for 2.5 years. The BMW i4M50 looks phenomenal at a bit more than half the price I paid for my AGT in 2022, fully optioned, is a value (to the extent that luxury cars are a value). I do not know its range and assume that its suspension and power delivery are great, as well as adequate interior and trunk storage space, if not as voluminous as the Air.

Thanks for your response. My comment was primarily about quality and reliability. The Air is a larger and more luxurious vehicle. The i4 is smaller but easy to park and very maneuverable. Another factor is that having a great BMW dealer two miles away is comforting. I’m getting very close to EPA range, averaging 280 miles from 100 to 20% on 19” wheels. I hope when my lease is up. Lucid will be on my list.
