Connected Home Charger - Speed Decreasing on 100A Circuit

@borski how did it go with the LCHCS replacement? My service guy maintains it’s the charger not the vehicle. He is putting me on touch with customer care to review
Working on it. Will let you know.

In case this is useful for anyone from Lucid, here is data from today's charging session courtesy of TeslaLogger. Power [kW] is in yellow at the bottom, you can see the 18-19 rate dropping to 8, then back up, then dropping to 1 (when I tried the mobile charger briefly per Customer Care's suggestion, then back up to full speed for around 45 minutes before throttling back again. This is with a LHCS hardwired with 80A setting on 100A breaker.

Yup. Exactly what I see if I try to charge at full amperage. If I drop it to 42 amps, it will pull 9.6kW just fine constantly

I don't imagine it will help. There is mounting evidence that it's a vehicle-specific issue.
I’m afraid that will be the case as well but perhaps good news that it may be resolved with a software update/fix.

Reporting some promising news. It's been two weeks waiting for Lectron to come through with the promised replacement for my 80A charge adapter for the Tesla Gen 3 EVSE. When I inquired about it via email last week, I was told they've had some unforeseen issues getting new stock and it would be a few MORE weeks. Might have something to do with them being made in China but I needed to do something to get more consistent charging.

I ordered the TeslaTap 80A adapter on Friday the 17th. The unit was shipped from California and arrived today, Monday the 20th. I was at a 58% SOC this afternoon, temps in the garage were in the high 80s - which were the same conditions experienced with the Lectron unit which couldn't charge more than 30 minutes at a time before the car would stop charging.

The first charge session with the TeslaTap 80A unit was a success. I kept my charge current at the reduced 40A I was doing with the Lectron unit and the TeslaTap held a consistent 9 kW for just under 3 hours charging from 58% - 80% SOC with no errors or stopping. I also noticed that the adapter has a nice snug fit into the charge port of the Lucid - Tighter than the Lectron. I really hope this is a solution. I'll give it a few more sessions before I call it a full success but the first run is promising. Now to give my faulty Lectron unit back for a credit - Hopefully.

I’d love to see what happens when you bump it to 48A.

Interesting.

There is of course still that fact that many on here were charging just fine before that May update with no other changed conditions (including adaptors) and nevertheless started experiencing the charging throttling.

Agree, me included. I had zero issues charging with the Lectron 80A from March to about May. Looking at the OTAs, it would make sense that release 2.8.0 would have “broken” charging since that introduced the AC power limiting feature. It was right around that time that I started getting issues. Changing from 48A to 40A helped for a while, then we got into deep AZ summer and I couldn’t charge more than :30 without a “charging stopped”.

My guess is there is a still a software issue. I also have a 100% repeatable charge door issue - press to open - it opens then closes. Have to press again to get the charge ready light and door stays open.

I think in my case, the Lectron adapter was either failing and/or the combination of it and the car did not agree. I’d like to methodically start ruling things out, so I opted for switching out adapters. The fact it works now may mean nothing after a dozen or so charge sessions.

That said, completed my second charge session with the TeslaTap today, and again, no issues. I’m wondering if the “loose” fit of the Lectron relative to the TeslaTap unit contributed to my “charge equipment error-unplug and plug in again” messages I would receive often. The handle, adapter, nor cable ever really got hot to the touch, even when my garage was 110+ degrees.

Another catch I noticed on the Lectron unit was the text, “Not for charge interrupting”. Have no idea what that means and couldn’t find anything on their website about it. The 80A adapter manual is still erroneously pointing to the 60A model.

I’ll report more after additional sessions or if I learn something new. I would love to hear from any TeslaTap / Gen 3 wall charger users here who are having the issues of charge interrupting or power reductions. Not seeing either at this point and I’m on 2.8.7 as of this writing.

Me too. Taking it slow to get a few 40A sessions first. Problem is, the other factor is now not an issue - the 100+ degree garage temps. That will have to wait until next summer.

My recommendation is for those using a different EVSE, contact Customer Care and work through them. I have a conversation open with Lucid Customer Care and I'm providing the info they are asking for. Once there is any sort of resolution, I'll be sure to share. Its not ideal to have to pay for an electrician to come install a replacement LCHCS and thus i'm hoping that they rule out my LCHCS.

It will be good for those with a thirty party EVSE to open a case and let them collect whatever data they need to narrow or broaden any root cause analysis they may undertake. We know some Lucid folks monitor these forums, but the best course of action is for each to initiate a case.

same boat here. I've provided specific timestamps of the charge start/end time, and a graph showing where the dropoff happened in the hopes they can pull the vehicle logs. After a few herculean efforts (you don't wanna know), I was able to pull the logs from the charger and there is no information there other than start/stop events...nothing about the throttle back, so that was a dead end.

They're now suggesting swapping out the LCHCS under warranty, to which I've suggested that the vehicle logs be reviewed, and/or taking the car to a nearby SC (Rutherford's newly-opened center isn't far away) to try out the car on their presumably large collection of LCHCS's. I don't want them 'waste' a new unit on me, nor do I want to pay an electrician to reinstall unless there is strong evidence that the charger is the issue.

The fact that so many people identified this issue as ONLY happening POST software-update in the vehicle is pretty strong evidence that it's related to that upgrade.

Yeah, the issue is very likely not the charging hardware because our BMW iX never throttles below 11kw when it’s charging.

A question to all: how long after plugging in your Air to the LCHCS does it take for the charging to begin? For me, it takes anywhere from 30-120 seconds, while other chargers start immediately or immediately after I initiate the paid session. It has pretty much taken this long the entire time I’ve had it, not just after the throttling began. The iX, however, starts immediately on the LCHCS.

similar for me. it takes a good minute or two. i've never timed it though. most of the time that doesn't bother me as i use scheduled charging. however i'd really like to get the full 80a for those times i just want to top off before heading out somewhere.

They do have the ability to pull some data; I’m not entirely sure with what, but when I talked to someone they said the data they had pulled showed mine needed replacing.

Evidently there are multiple reasons for this issue, but mine necessitated replacement. Not all of the reasons do? 🤷‍♂️

Still waiting on it, but’s it’s only been a day or two.

@marqie Curious if you've heard anything internally on this since your last post? Things strongly suggest an issue stemming from a software update somewhere back in May of this year.

LCC also wants to replace mine but wanted photos of the charge port on the car and the pins on the plug. Waiting to hear back still on the results of looking at the pins. Guessing I’ll know more Monday.

Thank you everyone for the conversation here. I am not able to address the specific home charging concerns you are having, but I invite you to contact Customer Care at [email protected] or +1 (888) 995-8243. They are happy to assist you.

Electrician was able to swap out the old LCHCS for the new replacement, which does have a new part number (rev 3 vs rev 2). First charge at 80A has been going for 2hrs without issue, will post update tomorrow.

Promising. But I wonder what this means for those of us using non-Lucid chargers. Looking forward to your update.

2hrs 20mins (I let it run to 85% so it would take a little bit longer) without any drop in rate. I simply haven't been able to do that in the past, so the initial solution appears to be working.

The UI for the charger is quite different as well, I'm seeing V2H options and quite a few additional fields that weren't there in the rev 2 interface. It also initiates the charge quite a bit faster (at least, when it wasn't connected to Wifi, I haven't tried it again since then).

Your LCHCS has newer firmware version numbers than my three year old unit. Something has been improved.
