CarPlay is here! - Megathread

The SA on yesterday’s test drive said CarPlay was coming by the end of the summer. He also said it was a UX issue, getting everything to fit nice in Lucid’s screen shapes. That makes sense to me. I doubt it is a licensing issue. If Lucid is already working on the port, then the license is already done.

I drove through several areas with weak or non-existent cell coverage today, and it was both annoying and comical how music would just stop. Annoying because it just plain sucks not have music on when you want it. Comical to think that whoever designed this system didn’t consider what it’s like to drive through rural areas. Apple CarPlay would solve a lot of issues and can’t arrive a moment too soon.

I said this on like page 3 but yes, I believe UX has always been the biggest constraint. CarPlay was made for horizontal screens of a certain ratio. Unless Lucid plans to have the CarPlay only on the top half of a screen, adapting everything to a vertical screen will be difficult. Because it's not just CarPlay's homescreen you have to account for, each developer's app as well.

Apple CarPlay does support vertical screen. You can choose whatever dimensions you want. It's the odd shaped screens that are a problem.

Edit: Despite what Apple's website says, it looks like Subaru Outback has a vertical screen CarPlay. Though it doesn't follow Apple's Design Guidelines of taking the whole screen. Kinda ugly.

I know this its a large thread, but if you look on page 9, I described what really (currently) is available on CarPlay as far as screen size (vertical display shown)

Here here I agree that the car is fantastic and not having CarPlay currently is not a reason to cancel an order. I just wish we could get a straight answer from top management on this issue. I guess I don't understand why communication is so difficult??

Ford implementing Apple CarPlay on just the top half of their screen. I can see Lucid doing something similar.
 
I think it's that 3rd screen on the right side giving them issues since it's curved and tapers on the right side
 
In my view lack of Apple CarPlay is one of the biggest missing promised features for our beloved Lucid Air's. They should prioritize this. Especially since Lucid made the design decision to omit a hardware based SiriusXM satellite radio. The only way to listen to SiriusXM is via a bluetooth connection to a phone app. Very clunky for a car at this price point. I love my Air GT, but this must be fixed quickly. Lucid, if you are listening (hopefully they are at least scanning forum) Apple CarPlay ASAP.

To my knowledge, no one on this forum has ever got the complete accurate story about the lack of SiriusXM on the Air. One SA I talked to said the car couldn't have Sirius XM due to the glass roof. Yet, there seem to be add-on aftermarket Sirius antennas that should work if installed. I'm assuming the Air has a GPS satellite antenna in the roof, at least for navigation purposes, so why not one for SiriusXM? If true, Lucid deciding to have a SiriusXM app on the dash where the data is coming from cellular, rather than satellite, just seems deliberately obtuse. Clearly there's something going on with SiriusXM in the Air that we're just not getting the full story on.

I think the full story may be that they are idiots if they didn't make provisions for satellite XM. I have put in an aftermarket Satellite XM radio in my Lucid and I placed satellite antenna currently on the rear deck by the speaker. There is no signal problem by going through the rear glass roof. I was told that the existing antenna array is behind the panel above the rear glass, which would be a better place.
 
How does the interface work between your aftermarket Tuner and Lucid? Is it BT, FM or direct?

I agree wholeheartedly with you, but I'm also wondering whether there actually is a satellite radio antenna in one of the roof panels, but its functionality hasn't been activated yet. However, if this were true, you'd think that, like CarPlay, Lucid would say it is "coming."
 
Seeing all the debate about SiriusXM has been interesting and completely eye-opening to me. I rented a car with Sirius once when it first came out decades ago. I drove into a parking garage and lost signal. Thought to myself "This is worthless" and then never considered subscribing to it ever again.

In the age of streaming and podcast apps, any live radio just feels like a relic to me. I had never questioned why Lucid wouldn't bother including it. Obviously I was wrong.

But if Lucid's designers were thinking like I was, there's your answer.
