2018 velar 2002 bmw z8
I hit a pot hole last week on the palisades parkway and immediately noticed a slight vibration. On inspection the rims looked ok but I don’t have access to a lift. The car went in the other day for the recall and a factory trim issue and I discover I have 2(!) bent rims on the inboard flange and a tire bubble. Lucid recommends two new rims and a tire. I’ll keep the old rims as I have a guy that works for all the high end dealerships and is a magician with this stuff. I’ll keep them as backup spares and put a tire on one

Lucid gave me some credit on the tire. It looks like USAA will pick up a chunk of the whole claim as well so not out too terrible out of pocket

It's hard to imagine that the 20's would have been much better in this circumstance. Maybe I should cave and change my order to 19".

For some context, I’ve had the same problem on two different BMW 8 Series on 21’s, both needed new wheels and tyres.

Sorry to hear but happy you were able to process a claim.

I selected 19s bc the roads here in NY Metro are not the best.

Maybe the Lucid 21' wheels are not as strong as those on my Porsche Pan GTS's, which both encountered potholes in MA over several winters without bending or causing tire problems. Of course, we cannot make a direct comparison because the conditions of each impact are different. Definitely will get a set of the 19's and the compact spare for the frunk discussed elsewhere on this forum, but will keep the 21's on my order.

21” just have less rubbers and air than 19”. But zi like how it look and brake well under stress conditions.

I will get the 21" wheels for the braking and cornering capabilities and hope that there are winter compound 21" tires available by the fall of this year. If not I will run the 19" wheels for winter with the AS tires. The contact patches of the 21" tires are larger than those of the 19" tires, although yes, they are lower profile/aspect ratio tires than the 19" tires.

Sorry to hear! Oh but can you weigh them now that they're off your car?

Did anyone here have teslas with 21s on them? I’ve had two model s and both had 21in wheels with what I’ll call success considering I live in Chicago. Any idea how the lucid 21s compare with Tesla model s?

I brought this up in another post a while ago. Porsche and Audi offer company wheel and tire damage insurance at purchase. Lucid should also offer this insurance. The fact is that road hazard damage will always be a problem whatever size wheels and tires one has. If another non-manufacturer wheel and tie damage insurance is available I will get it.

Pirelli actually provides one year road hazard warranty on their tires that have the foam.

The wheels, however, have no such warranty.

my bigger concern is that the lucid is simply too heavy for the 21 in tires that comes with it and bust too easily under the slightest road imperfections…

My wheel and tire insurance were for a four-year term, so tire manufacturer one-year road hazard damage insurance is not especially helpful given the probability of wheel damage.

ymmv, of course, but I’ve put about 5000mi on the 21” tires with no issues, and I’ve driven it through some rough patches. I do everything I can to avoid potholes though 🤷‍♂️

Speaking of tires, I have an AT reserved with the 20-inch Aero Lite wheels, which I know come with summer tires much to my dismay given that I live in a cold climate (NJ). I just find them more aesthetically pleasing, but have been going back and forth on whether to change to the 19-inch wheels instead. However, are there options to replace the tires themselves to a more all-season 20 inch or 21 inch tire (for those of you that have 21s) rather than having to purchase the 19s for winter time?

My experience with dealer-sold tire warranties is that they are not worth it. As an example, the last and final time I tried this was on a Mini Cooper S. It comes with noisy, poor handling, expensive run-flat tires. The warranty cost $1400 I think, which was roughly the cost of an entire set of tires through the dealer. I bumped a curb (which are made of granite in MA), which cut a huge gouge of rubber out of the sidewall. The sidewall didn't totally fail though, so they refused to replace the tire. A tire with a giant chunk of rubber missing from its sidewall.

So I told them to cancel the remainder of the policy and refund the prorated balance. I got $400 back, which was more than enough to replace that one tire with a not-from-the-dealer one. In fact it was enough cash to cover almost two of them.

Even if Lucid offered an optional road hazard warranty, I'd advise against using it. I see them as a scam by dealers.
