This concept car might be in production in 2023. Very aggressive schedule by Kia. The doors and cabin are very stylish…

I’m assuming they’ll lose that steering wheel. And also the usual caveats around concept to production. But that’s nice. I do hope they keep the doors.

More options is always a good thing. We need to give that transition to EVs as many shoves as we can.

I happen to think that is like yoke 2.0, it is much easier for big U-turn steering and its low profile does not block the dashboard.

Here's a spy shot of the exterior from the last week. I think a lot of the unique design features like the wide open doors are gone and it's a much more conventional SUV EV.

Probably cost factor and fast to production…

Bleh…

Thinking about this. It’s hard to say. Maybe that is just a generic cover, maybe doors are swinging wide open.

In the concept model shots, the door handles for front and rear doors are next to each other so that the doors can swing out wide to create the pass-through seen in the pics. For the spy shots, the covers for the door handles are in their conventional spots. Plus, I don't know how you make a car safe in case of rollovers using the concept car's design.

Off topic (of course): Is there an EV convertible? Maybe the Polestar 0, but that's also a concept and not a production car.

Possibly well disguised although I’m not sure if rear suicide doors would really be a net benefit. Every other car I know with rear suicide doors and no B-pillar (Honda element, Mazda RX-something) requires the front door to be open to be able to open the rear door. For a family SUV that seems like a non-starter.

Body rigidity and crash safety would seem to be a challenge with the concept car too.

It the EV9 turns out to be essentially an electrified Telluride and keep it under $60K, Kia will not be able to keep them in stock! They will sell like hotcakes.

I really like the direction Kia and Hyundai are going. They were nowhere close to being a consideration just a few years ago.

They'll be eating some of Tesla's cake for sure, if the CCS charging network providers can get their act together.

Yes, the only post 60s vehicles without B pillars are coupes and those with small rear doors. You only have to look at what happened to the Ioniq 6 pillarless door design in the prototype versus the "standard" B pillar production car to know there is going to be a B pillar in the Ioniq 9. Multiple concept cars have shown pillarless designs that never make it to production.
