Gravity test drive

HUD a useless distraction.

Take my drivers license away on the day when I become to feeble to scan my mirrors every few seconds, driver awareness is all about anticipating what can go wrong around you.

Expect the unexpected.
Also, the cars we demoed were GTs and had lights on doors and down the middle where rear view mirror goes. Not sure where else people expect dynamic lighting.

If you want a party bus, buy one.

The cars demo'ed in Tysons were all GTs *with the HUD option* so they had the full lighting package. Without the HUD there are no LED strips in the doors. As to the "party bus" comment, I guess I'll concede it's just a cosmetic feature, but so is a lot of stuff in a >$100K luxury vehicle. A little ambient lighting puts it over the top.

Good point. My bad.

That raises a good question about the HUD. If it’s in such short supply for a hardware issue, why put it in the demos and studio cars? Especially if it doesn’t even work.

Because eventually the HUD will be available in those models so no point sending cars to studios without a HUD only to need to send a fresh batch of cars 6 months later with a HUD.

I also think Lucid had every intention of trying to get the HUD out from day 1 but something clearly backed them into a corner where they couldn’t wait and longer any had to pull the pin.

I know a lot has already been shared about the impressions after the Gravity test drives, but i figured I'd add my take trying to keep it short. I test drove it today in White Plains NY, last day and last stop of the tour, the vehicles are now going back to CA.

As everyone commented, the driving experience is great, very finely tuned suspension and acceleration. Feels luxurious and well built. It takes a while to find a comfortable driving position given all the seat adjustment options, but once you do it's great. I also liked that the squircle's position is very adjustable, both in height and depth. The sound system is good but not great, and the Here Maps are better than what I'd seen in the past in other cars but still not as good as Google maps in Tesla or Volvo. But I did like that it works on both screens. The blind spot cameras show a tiny square in the display and it looks very low resolution, but it gets the job done for turns and lane changes.

As for delivery, they said they can now give more informed dates. Mine is with the tech package, so they say for sure this year but Fall or maybe even Winter, kinda expected. What I found interesting is that they said the delay is for both the HUD and Dream Drive Pro hardware (first time I hear that one... not sure if that's really the case). They also said they expect all studios to have a floor vehicle and 2 for demo drives in the next 2 weeks.

We'll keep building up patience and managing anxiety :)

I have to disagree. A non-trivial fraction of car accidents are the result of perceptual errors on the part of a driver. It's a surprisingly common phenomena for a driver after an accident to say something like "I never even saw him!". Mental alertness while driving doesn't entirely prevent the failure. While I don't think the marketing video really presents much that's compelling, there's potential for the AR HUD to highlight things in the environment in a way that could materially reduce that kind of accident. I have no idea whether Lucid will get to that point or not. But I'm intrigued by the possibility. Particularly at night, it's impressive to me how much faster a Waymo identifies all the vehicles/people/pets around than I do, and I'd love to see that kind of labeling in my vehicle's HUD some day.

I have to say I thought the camera quality was pretty decent during my test drive. I don't know if it's because I'm so used to the Air's cameras but even compared to Tesla's newer camera's in their Model 3 and Y's that I've seen it seemed pretty much on par to me. I was actually a little surprised at how good it looked.

Also specifically on the frame rate it also felt much smoother compared to the Air. Didn't have much of any lag time.

Love to see more perspectives, thanks for sharing!
For me, software and nav wise, it's going to be a huge step up from what I'm used to. Never owned a Tesla or Volvo to compare it to. The software in the Taycan absolutely blows and it's about the same for my wife's EV9, especially the Nav. I was thoroughly impressed when I rented the Air and even more impressed with the Gravity. Looking forward to the upgrade!

I hate when they saw fall or winter. Does Lucid know winter goes from Dec 21, 2025 to Mar 20, 2026. So when they say “yeah winter this year” do we really think they’re going to deliver all our vehicles in the last 10 days of the year?

Rivian would do the same thing. “You’ll get an update on your vehicle by end of summer” well, end of summer is when kids go back to school, nope that day came and went. How about Labor Day? Nope, that day came and went. Ahh, they’re waiting till the last week of the summer season? Nope. They waited till the night before it was the first day of fall. So when Lucid says fall 2025, you can get your car on Dec 20th this year and it’ll be fall. Plan accordingly.

We had a Hyundai Ioniq 5 with the Heads Up Display .. one of the features we loved was the left and right Blind Spot Indicators appearing on the HUD. It shows up as a left and right Red wifi-like symbols. You didn't have to move your eyes to know there was another vehicle there. It displayed on the: Mirror, Central Display and HUD. I'm actually surprised other vendor's HUD (like on our Lexus RX450+) doesn't display Blind Spot information as well.

So, when they say expected delivery by fall or winter of this year, was that for all pending orders with tech package or just yours? If it was for just yours, when did you place order?

The HUD isn't expected to be available for any USA non-Dream Gravity until late this year.

I'd hope that Lucid does the same. My Highlander has blindspot warning lights integrated into the side mirrors. They work, but they're not prominent enough. The lights are small, and I find I have to force myself to pause and look for them, as they're too easy to miss if you turn your head just long enough to see what's in the mirror, and then back to the road.

I do think that Lucid's in-mirror blind spot warning lights could be a little less elegant and a little more obvious. Our Volvo's are great, though I sorely miss the Lucid's side cam pop-up view when driving that car.

Afternoon lucid Fans,

I just test drove the Gravity and looked at a final build at Tysons Corner showroom in Virginia. I was really surprised at the interior space with how much headroom all occupants have. I am 6 feet tall and had a huge amount on headroom (in my opinion way more than my air). Both cars were painted Aurora Green and depending on light it can look more grey than green. It is a very subtle green and to me the Tahoe interior is not orange at all (like some have stated). I also have to admit the large wheels don’t look as big as I thought they were going to look…. I really want the extra range and having smaller wheels doesn’t bother me.

I didn’t have a lot of time in the car but I think the summer tires feel like they are all season. The car feels and drives solidly (very planted).

The tech is similar to the air but there is a lot more you can do and it’s pretty much all sorted out for the most part. Except HUD and hands free driving.

I look forward to adding the gravity to my garage.
This is a superb review. It helped me to make the most efficient use of the 45 minutes of total time that we were given at White Plains Lucid to do a quick test drive and some discussions. I would like to add the following:

1. The car is significantly more refined than the Air/Touring that I drive now. The thunk of the door is better. To me, it's one of the most important thing to set the table for a good impression. I liked it. The door behaves much better. I believe Air's "entry and exit" experience is bad, and particularly has the potential to turn off women. The door is heavy, it opens so wide that you have to send someone else to grab and pull it close. On a grade, it can sever your leg from your foot with the way it comes down as you pull it.

Gravity was much better.

2. We both loved the front seats. I like Air's just fine, but my wife does not. She felt that our earlier Audit A7 and Q7s were much better. She loved the Gravity seats in the front. I loved the greater support, and side support and adjustability of the headrest. Very nice.

3. I didn't spend too much time in the middle row. But my wife loved it. She felt that the middle seat is now perceptibly wider. The legroom was awesome.

4. The third row was terrific. Given the slimness of the cushion back there, it was surprisingly comfortable.

5. I am generally no fan of screen-based interaction. But I believe their new UX is better than the one in Air. But with more flexibility comes greater need for judicious implementation of it. So, I hope we don't get bombarded with unnecessary services, logos and bright pixels that could take away from the refined internal environment.

6. Having said that, I hope they offer different design templates for the main cockpit, e.g. different layouts of speed, speed limits, navigation etc. For instance, Apple Car Play Ultra (and many other legacy ICE models such as Audi, BMW etc) offer different layouts, some sporty, some more elegant etc. I hope Lucid would do the same. I DID NOT like the main cockpit display change where the Speed, Regen Levels, and Battery Usage are presented in a linear design. I like my Air's rotary display much better. There should be a choice.

7. I would've liked to see an option to have the navigation displayed right in the middle of the driver's cockpit to further reduce the need to take your eyes away from the road. Again, other models (ICE and EVs) allow it. Car Play Ultra does as well.

8. I am 5'7". My wife is 5'5". We did not face any issues with reaching for controls, gas pedals etc. I realize fully that all of these things are far more complex than height, but just wanted to make the observation.

9. Drive quality: I echo the earlier review. Too short. But I did some expressway and off ramp etc. The car handled VERY well. The Squircle was no problem at all. The turning radius with the rear wheel steering was just phenomenal.

10. There was a light drizzle. The wipers worked intermittently. But when they receded after being idle for a while, I heard a loud thunk which was disappointing. It was very ungainly for a car like this (or any other cars). The rep told me that "we are working on this."

11. This car did not have the HUD, for what it's worth.

The new KoP Studio is currently open (they did a soft-opening the last week of May), so you can call them to get the latest info on when a Gravity might be there for a test drive. I think they're going to have one there for the Grand Opening on June 7, but better call to make sure because of the changing availability. When I was there on Friday 5/30, there was just one Gravity but it was a personally-owned one that was in the shop for repairs.

I posted this on another thread but Tiffany confirmed they will have Gravity available to sit in and interact with but no test drives Saturday. The event is at the Center Center / Studio, not in the mall.

Tiffany said the Gravity they have there has a broken screen so no test drives. I think she may be referring to the HUD not working but either way, no test drives Saturday. Unless something changes between now and then.

As soon as the EPA certification is approved in CA, they will get display/test drive units delivered to all studios. Hopefully with customer cars that have already been vin'd and are sitting pretty @ their factory/lot in Casa Grande.

I don't know if this was released today or back on 4/23. Regardless, I wish we can see a flyover of the Casa Grande shipping lot this week, to see if there's any activity.
