A thought directed at the 57% or so of Dream Edition reservation holders who are opting for the base or mid spec wheels. It’d seem like we could get a list/ thread going with GT buyers who’d be willing to trade wheels.
I’d propose splitting the profit: a Dream buyer, for example, who wants the base wheels links with a local GT buyer who wants top spec wheels (a $3500 option). Knowing they have a “customer” the Dream buyer then orders the top spec wheels and swaps with the GT reservation holder when their car comes in. The base buyer also hands over $1750, so each party gets 1.75k for their trouble. If for some reason that particular deal falls through I suspect others would step up.
What do others think, any interest?
Not a bad idea. But I spent weeks of tearing my hair out trying to figure out the right choice of wheels and tires to get the optimal balance of range and handling with the limited tire choices posed by the staggered diameters and widths. You finally convinced me the best route was to stick with the tires Lucid matched to each wheel set and to use wheel swaps when greater range and cold-weather capability was needed. But that just seemed like such a hassle. So I finally blew a fuse and came up with a different solution.
Yesterday I ordered a second Gravity for the household. Each of us wants the use of an EV when the other EV is being used, so we were going to keep two Lucids, anyway -- the Gravity Dream and the Air Dream Performance. (We're saying bye-bye and good riddance to the Model S Plaid.) So we just decided to make it two Gravities instead.
And there were a few other factors at play. I still love the Air Dream and will really miss that gorgeous Santa Monica interior. But there's no extended manufacturer's warranty yet available for it, and I don't like driving expensive-to-repair cars outside of warranty (although there is still the 8-year powertrain warranty). And, the more I look at the Gravity and how advanced its software and UI might be, I've begun to wonder if it might make the Air's setup feel a little dated by comparison -- a worry I've not heretofore had. And, finally, I've got another joint replacement coming up, and the Air is just getting a bit more challenging on the ingress/egress front.
I'm not a fan of the Gravity Dream exterior or interior color choices, either. The Aurora Green looks pretty good, but I'm just tired of seeing it in almost every photograph. So a second Gravity gets me to the colors I really like on the Gravity:
Here's the lineup:
Dream Edition
Aurora Green / Tahoe
22/23" wheels
7-passenger
All options
Grand Touring
Lunar Titanium / Ojai
20/21" wheels
7-passenger
All options
Since the Lunar Titanium is still showing as "late availability", we should have time to figure out if we like the first Gravity as much as we think we will. If we don't, there'll still be time to abort on the second Gravity. But I just wanted to get in the queue now should Gravity demand exceed production capacity for any significant period.
