I am a new Lucid owner and trying to decide if it is worth the effort to sign up for the FPL EV Charging program. The website is impossible to navigate, and there is no phone number to call to ask questions. For the record, the offered deal is:

  • They install a home charging station at no cost
  • They offer unlimited charging during non-peak hours for ~ $32/month
  • I sign a 10-year agreement
If anyone has experience with this and can provide some input, I'd be very grateful.

Hey David, I've had my LAGT for about 5 weeks, love it. I'm up near the Villages south of Ocala. I installed a home charger myself and have charging scheduled nightly at 9.30pm. Haven't bothered with the incentives, @ $0.9 to $0.11 cent/KWH I'm not too concerned about saving a few extra bucks if at all. My charger model is Emporia Energy it cost about $400+ on Amazon.

I’m in Miami and I’m using a Tesla Gen 3 Wall Charger with an adaptor. Lately I’ve been getting throttling down of my kw charge rate but as I’ve mentioned in other threads I don’t know if it’s the hotter weather in my garage (which is warm tk be fair), the Lectron adaptor or something else. When I first got the car in March I was getting 11-12kw no problem like I did on my Tesla.

So I’ve considered the FPL deal but I still feel like it’s a deal with the devil. I can’t imagine dealing with them if something goes wrong and ten years…

I’m in West Palm and, like Miami_Lucid_Man, I’m using a Lectron adaptor with a Tesla charger. Signing a 10 year contract with FPL is a concern, so I don’t think I’ll do it, and I agree with davidarogan about how confusing the site is to navigate… to me it doesn’t bode well if there are problems/issues in the future. Have had the car for almost a month, and charge it after 10pm at home. FPL bill has increased, but not by a huge amount. My garage also gets warm, so I bought a cheap oscillating fan that has made the garage more comfortable, and I’ve noticed the car doesn’t turn on its own fan to cool the batteries when charging.

Have you notice any throttling down of charge rate in the last few months after about 30 minutes or so? I start at 11 like I did with my old Model 3 but it now throttles down to as low as 6kw after about 30-45 mins of charging.

I might try a fan just to move the air.

I can’t imagine signing a 10 year agreement with a power company…. We installed a mini split in our garage. It keeps the garage (insulated) cool all the time. We have two electric cars that we charge. Never see any issues after the mini split was added. Before we had issues with engine fans running a on a Porsche plug in hybrid. Draining the 12v battery.
Also keeps humidity levels low which is better for cars as well..

I’ve had FPL EVolution for three years with no issues. If you need more info send me a direct message.

While I have no doubt about FPL being here in 10 years, I would hate to be locked into their program and charger for 10 years. This will be cheaper than installling a charger yourself and paying for electricity, but not by much. Eight 40 kWh charges a month would cost about $45 with FPL’s rates (assuming $0.14/kWh), so getting cheaper rates and a charger could be nice, but you have to decide if you want to be locked into for 10 years. You would also be precluded from speeds faster than 9kw; that’s fine for many people, but it is nice to be able to charge at 18kw with the Lucid charger or the Grizzl-E 80amp charger.

I bought a Lucid charger from another Lucid owner (they got the credit towards the cost of the charger & I r paid about 50% of the retail cost). I had been regularly seeing them available on this forum so you might want to go that route & avoid that long term FPL contract. It ran me about $1,900 to run the 100amp line for the charger so I was all-in for about $2,500. Hope this helps. ( I'm in Vero Beach so your cost of installation may differ)

The upside to FPL's program though, I think, is if you charge on nights/weekends/holidays (which I think most people do), it's no extra charge. So you're really only paying the monthly contract price of 2-something bucks, which is less than the standard rate on any other charger. Unless I'm mistaken.

If you charge on non-peak hours and if you already have the Neema 14-50 outlet already installed in your garage then FPL installs their charger then you pay only $31.00 a month. Like a mentioned earlier I’ve had it now for 3 years with no issues. If I had to break the contract within the 10 years I was told I just have to pay-off the cost of the charger which in the grand scheme of things was insignificant. Hope this helps.

Right...exactly. See that's a potential benefit right there. If I have a Tesla Wall Charger currently in place would that be a quick swap for them at that same monthly cost, if you know? I don't have a NEMA in the garage.

I already had the Neema 14-50 circuit in my garage so FPL did not have to run a new line. It looks like your garage is already wired for it because you have the Tesla Wall Charger. If you want to DM me I will call you and provide a contact number with FPL’s EVolution team.

Yes, charging slows down the closer it gets to whatever % of charge you set the car to. I set it at 85% and the last 5% takes quite a while as the kw reduces.

All, thank you so much for your replies. I paid $1200 to have the larger circuit extended to my carport. My plan was to use the charging kit that Lucid provides (if I ever get it!) and plug that into the outlet to charge. FPL's website says that the "average EV customer pays $90/month to charge". No idea. if this is true as it sounds like at some of of you are paying much less. dcr33313 says that they pay ~ $45/month on FPL's rates (based on "Eight 40 kWh charges a month" or ~ 2 times per week?). If this is true, I'd rather pay this way vs committing to 10 years to save $14/month. @dcr33313, please do tell me if I misunderstood your message (sorry, first EV and still learning).

My angst with FPL, is that in order to get past their "qualification questions", I have to lie and say that 1) I have a garage vs. a carport) and 2) that the circuit breaker panel is less than 10'. If I do this (just to get them to come out and assess and ANSWER questions, fine, but they then make you click that you acknowledge the terms and conditions which turn out to be a contract that implies that it is binding once FPL signs it next. Only been in Florida since 2022 but this is crazy!

And then there’s this too:

BTW, did anyone use their stipend to buy the 40-amp charging kit? Very frustrating experience as it looks like it could be a couple months to get one. I'm chained to public charging stations, and have wasted $1200 on installing a new circuit (at least for now). How can they sell an EV and make you wait for months to be able to charge it from home? Sorry, not a complainer by nature, but this frustrates me.

Yeah understood. But I’m talking about 30 mins into a charge from say 20-80%. It started happening a few months ago for me at home after a month with the Air and 6 years prior with Teslas without issue.
