Android Auto Thursday

I have the S23 Ultra. I now see an Apple CarPlay icon on right side of the main cockpit display. It doesn't do anything at this point, but it's probably there for future improvements.
I think that's new addition after 2.6.0

Pixel 9 Pro, got the update yesterday, same AA prompt and CarPlay icon since.

It does appear that AA support is actually imminent (famous last words). Reading the tea leaves, it looks like @Bobby's response to me about us for sure getting a similar rectangular interface like CarPlay is correct, since the developers are likely utilizing existing UI building blocks for AA enabelment (the CarPlay prompt in the UI as a clue).

If so, this long and valiant thread is likely not long for the world. In anticipation of this momentous event, we should go ahead and create another "Android Auto complaint Wednesday" thread where we all express our disappointment for the lack of features in the already supported AA weekly every Wednesday 🤣.

I humbly request a one-week reprieve

That doesn't quite sound right. If a person has an Android phone, it makes sense to show something for AA, but not until it's in place. If an iPhone is paired, then it makes sense to show that icon, and I assume that for those people with iPhones, something was either there or somewhere else all along. And for folks without either, I wouldn't expect any icon. A CarPlay icon is now showing up, and it doesn't hurt anybody having it there, but when a system should show one of three things, getting ready for AA should have resulted in the blank one for people without iPhones. That would have been closer to ready. If it was unintentional, it's not something that's worth their time to fix, since it should clear up when AA is released.

Perhaps somebody with an iPhone can comment on what's shown when an iPhone is paired.

The CarPlay icon is shown when an iPhone is connected, just like this. My guess is it wants to project the phone, but can’t, because AA is not yet on, so it’s confused.

... A CarPlay icon is now showing up, and it doesn't hurt anybody having it there ...
One small side effect if you are infected with cat curiosity and clicked the CarPlay icon is that after it is done failing to connect, you will discover that it disconnects your phones link to the car (in its function as a phone, linking for music/normal headset playback is fine). Depending on how you discover this, it might be awkward to fix it while driving. Fixing it is simply going to the devices tab and reenabling connection of your phone there.

I checked this out on my drive home. I have the Carlinkit in the car for AA usage. Before this last update, if I connected it, I would see an Apple CarPlay as a music choice. When it started, it would come up on the cockpit, but afterwards I'd have to go into the music source selection to see it again. If it wasn't connected, there was no sign of CarPlay on any screen. But now, if the Carlinkit is connected, the CarPlay icon on the main screen brings up the AA screen. So, I'm guessing whenever AA gets here, it'll do the same.

Happy Android Auto Thursday!!!!

Entering month 26 after purchasing the car based on AA being an advertised feature. Evidently Google certification takes 1/2 a year. At least the new Android mobile app is great to use after the update...oh wait.

Whats odd was, why Lucid ignored the fact of Google certification process and announced a timeline excluding it. And now say to customers its in Google’s hand now 🙀

You got to love people that think the Lucid software team is made up of idiots. I have met a handful of their team and they are very smart dedicated people. Are they perfect? No. Do they make mistakes? Yes. Were they optimistic about Google approval? Sure. I am also sure that they did not IGNORE the Google certification process in their time estimates because they are way smarter than that.

I don’t mean to suggest that they’re incompetent or lacking in quality—I personally know people working there. However, the time taken for this, especially for AA, seems excessive compared to how the broader software industry operates. I understand that Lucid is actively working on it and not ignoring the issue.

Since we’re all rooting for Lucid’s success, these delays can be frustrating for some buyers, and it’s important that Lucid doesn’t lose their trust this early on. Of course, many companies, cars, and projects miss the mark or face delays. But as an owner, investor, and tech enthusiast, I don’t want Lucid to follow that path or even be compared to those cases! 😂

Lucid software is a mess. You can see the signs everywhere, not just with the lack of Android Auto. Android Auto could have been implemented many months ago if Lucid so desired.

I received an independent survey rating Lucid. I rated the company poorly because the company has ignored the Android market, and the mediocre state of Lucid vehicle software.

There have been many questionable software design decisions made by Lucid since day one, software development is slow, and company communication concerning software development sucks.

Let the buyer beware when it comes to Lucid vehicle software, especially if you own an Android phone.

I don't know if its a mess mess ....I agree it can use improvements, which they've been making diligently ... and I applaud them for it. I've had issues too in owning the car, but such are the ways when its a new brand...I feel you're being a bit harsh...Also, I'm an Android user too...and realized early on that Android will be second fiddle to the more used Apple products...I'd do nothing different in prioritizing Apple simply because its more of their user base...Gravity's software looks amazing and I'm sure it'll trickle over to the Air as well...patience is key.

That's actually incorrect. I've never connected an iPhone to my car but I saw the CarPlay icon also. I think it was just the first time after the update though

Yes, with new update the icon was there irrespective of Iphone connected or not. In the past when i click on the icon it tries to connect to CarPlay not it just opens the connectivity tab to click on CarPlay symbol in connected deices again.

Lucid does not control when Google releases a new version of Android Auto.

Your assertion is absurd on its face, and the implication that Lucid somehow is withholding Android Auto because they desire to piss you off is absurd.

Lucid’s software has had plenty of missteps, but has also improved immensely. Name a car that doesn’t have bugs, and I have some oceanside property to sell you in Utah.

That’s really unfortunate, since Android isn’t what makes a car good or bad, but okay. Your survey, your opinion.

Without context, it’s easy to throw stones. Context is everything, as always. Have you ever heard of Chesterton’s fence? It’s not precisely the same idea, but it’s related to my point about context being everything.

The last line of that post is very good: “You don’t need to be a slave to tradition, but you should approach what already exists with humility and curiosity.”

Instead of making assumptions that everyone on Lucid’s software team sucks, perhaps consider asking questions and being curious about it first, seeking to understand.

For example, building a new company is obviously difficult, and especially building one that makes cars. As a result, you undoubtedly take on a ton of technical debt as a new startup (period) but even more so in something as complicated as an EV.

Lucid is both paying back that technical debt while simultaneously building new features, and that technical debt is what’s bothering you.

But here’s the thing: every single new startup has this problem. Tesla did. Rivian does (and still has plenty of software issues as per their forum). Lucid does.

Ford might not, because they’re not a startup. Hyundai’s software is hot garbage. They still make great cars.

Let the buyer beware when it comes to Lucid vehicle software, especially if you own an Android phone.
Okay.

What part is incorrect?

“The CarPlay icon is shown when an iPhone is connected, just like this” -> this is obviously true, as this is the icon the shows up when an iPhone is connected.

“My guess is it wants to project the phone, but can’t, because AA is not yet on, so it’s confused.” -> since the owner doesn’t have an iPhone, but I suspect AA is already there under the hood, and waiting for Google, the car *wants* to project the owner’s Android phone, but can’t, since AA isn’t yet active, so shows the CarPlay icon because it’s confused.

I never said the owner had an iPhone.
