New Variant coming....

1500 HP Tri-Motors Grand Touring Extreme Performance trim GTEP with 21” winter tires

I’ll venture a guess that it will be a higher trim variant that includes the individual reclining seats that were shown early on but have never actually been available

We will know soon enough, but I trust for volume sake that Lucid announces a lower-cost "variant," or better yet an entirely new size and configuration like a mid-sized SUV. Sure, some want tri-motor and better trim and color choices for the Air, but that market is quite narrow, and Lucid already has its halo car in the AGTP. BA trim variants are fine for some, but given its production problems why add another version to the Air GT mix?

Tri-Motor Air???

It's billed as "The Pinnacle of Electric Performance" . . . so, yeah, I'd bet on the Tri-Motor.

If so, this is going to drive me mad with confusion. Will I sacrifice a bit of range to trade my Dream Edition? Will I give up the best interior color palette (the Santa Monica) I've ever seen in a car? Would I accept a stiffer suspension when I have a car with the perfect blend of compliance and handling? Do I need more power when I don't even make full use of what the Dream Edition serves up?

Oh, screw it. Of course I'll get one.

Why? Because it exists . . . and I'm getting senile.

"The Quail: A Motorsports Gathering (Friday, August 19) – In addition to a substantial presence at The Quail, Lucid will host a press conference in its display on the central lawn at 10:05 am PDT for a global debut of a new vehicle variant that could only come from Lucid. Following the reveal, key leadership will be on hand to showcase this stunning new addition to the Lucid Air lineup."
new addition to the Lucid Air lineup.

Ok, Gravity SUV unmasked and starts taking online orders.

It makes sense as Gravity is the new line up.

It says Lucid Air lineup not Lucid Motors..

The press release also uses the term "variant". In auto world lingo, that means a different version of an existing model.

If it is 1.7 Tri-Motors Air, it may be lame….
But then it would win the buzz of “fastest acceleration production car ever” crown.

Deep down I wish it’s a 3 rows SUV.

That's what I'm waiting for to replace our Honda Odyssey -- and something that would make a lot more sense than lusting after a tri-motor Air. I'm sure the SUV will get here, but Lucid has recently said it would be 2024 before we see it.

Quad Motor.

That’s right, four motors; one for each wheel.

Why? Because they can, and they have to.

Lucid power plant is small enough to fit four. And they’ll need a four motor setup for the gravity SUV to be competitive.

Calling it now. Four motor: two thousand horsepower.

Place your bets.

According to Zak Edson, VP of Sales & Service, the Air platform can, indeed, take four motors. However, Lucid is only planning a 4-motor configuration for its larger products (SUV? Eventual pick-up truck?)

Except for an almost uselessly-small increase in front-axle torque vectoring precision, there would be no point in going to a 4-motor configuration on the Air. It would only add weight, burden range, and produce vastly more power than front tire grip can put to the road.

Also, the power output is limited by the battery pack. The 2-motor Air is already limited in output by the battery's capacity to produce current.

It’s a performance focused event. It’s a variant of the Air. Tri-motor is the safe bet.

Now for real speculation:

It’ll cost about 200k.
It’ll only be offered in Stealth.
It’ll start shipping next year.

Midnight blue with stealth...sexy

Also, they will likely only sell a handful of these. The only reason for it to exist is to dethrone the Plaid as the fastest EV sedan. Those bragging rights are important.

The tri-motor is going to need some wider wheel/tire choices to make it to the "pinnacle" of EV performance.

To whom are the bragging rights important? If Lucid could claim the bragging rights to the fastest sedan time around Nurburgring to best the Taycan's recent run, that would be important to me.

I can’t see it being a tri-motor yet. I’ll gladly eat my words if it turns out that way, but I’m betting it’s just the stealth package in the wild on the GTP

This is true if the pinnacle is defined only by acceleration. However, if you incorporate handling prowess into the definition, the Air as currently configured is already in contention with the Tesla Model S Plaid for the current title. (I omit the Taycan from this observation only because of its lag in raw power compared to the Air and Plaid.)

Our Plaid is quicker off the line than our Air Dream Performance, but the Plaid's cruder suspension setup and weight imbalance erases that accelerative advantage very quickly.

(The Plaid 21" wheels wear 265 mm tires in front and 295 mm in back, compared to the 245/265 shoes on the Air 21". I suspect the tri-motor Air will follow Tesla's lead on tires, as it has with the current variants.)
