Gravity Delivery Discussion

The aero covers (aka wheel covers) are included.

We're talking about the wheel cap kit.

Got it. Makes total sense that would cost extra for GGT. I remember for our Quad R1S, Rivian charged $20/cap for the wheel caps! And they gave us none to start! It was the same with our first S in 2013…

The annoying part with Rivian was they were never in stock. As long as Lucid has them in stock, I have no issue with this approach.

I have a theory about the HUD.

DISCLAIMER: This is pure speculation, I have no inside knowledge, I am probably wrong....

I am wondering if the supply chain issue is actually that the supplier had build issues with the units delivered to Lucid?

We know:
* Lucid expected to deliver all DE orders by end of June.
* They removed it as an option for GGT due to supply chain issues
* Several of us have been told recently but SAs to expect a month or two delay before our DEs go into production (mine is currently pre-VIN that I understand to be the parts-gathering phase.)

I'm speculating that
* the supplier actually delivered a significant number of HUDs to Lucid
* Lucid discovered the artifact problem and started rejecting units.
* They thought they would still have enough for DE
* They built what they could using the best of the delivered units but have run out.
* I am assuming others were completely non-functional, or had much worse artifact problems.

Having found the problem, and hopefully diagnosed the manufacturing problem early on, they may have a V2 HUD being delivered this Fall.

But the wheel covers are required to get the stated range. Those have been coming with the GGTs, right?

That's still a mystery to me. The mid-size wheels with the aero covers and a 1.1" narrower contact patch on its less sticky tires has the same stated range as the larger wheels with no aero covers.

I'd really like to see Lucid's actual numbers on this.

If you got the 20's or 21's the wheels have inserts in them for better range. If you pull them out the wheel nuts are exposed so they provide the covers for them.

I'm not really interested in a different center cap.
Just covering the lug nuts.
Paying $200 for lug nut covers that I will use and center caps that I don't want?
Hmmm.

I haven't seen a close up of what the 21's/22's look like with the lug nuts exposed.
I'm thinking they look kinda raw, gray metal, no gloss finish.

Do you mind taking a pic with one of the lug nut covers off on your GDE?
If they're not hard to remove.

I told my SA to bill me for the lug nut covers, but I'm rethinking it because I'm fine with the center caps that come with the car.

Found these pictures of a 20" Air with aero cover removed and no lug nut cover.
Will try to buy lug nut covers only.

Found part numbers for Air center cap and lug nut covers.
Need them for Gravity.

I too am dumping an X, but it’s worth so little (2022 refresh, etc), we may just keep as a third car.

Love hearing all the feedback and delivery info! Helps me keep hope alive during my Gravity wait.
The only serious (from my perspective) issue I’ve had so far happened this morning. Had given myself *just* enough time to get from home to the office for a meeting; naturally this was the moment the dreaded key detection issue reared its head 😵‍💫

Neither the key fob or key card worked to unlock or otherwise interact with the car. While I was able to unlock the car with the app, I was unable to engage drive or reverse, instead presented with the ‘Key not detected’ warning. Tried shaking key, as advised in the warning message, to no avail. Tried the key card multiple times (b-pillar tap, as well as rubbing around on the charging patch in center console for phones). Nada.

Called customer support, and they were super helpful, ultimately pushing an update to the car within 15 minutes of my initial call. Odd that the update carried the same version number as what was already installed in the car (3.2.1) but I guess the overwrite did the trick (or there was a teeny code change that didn’t warrant a version number bump?)

Regardless, all works as expected now (repeatedly). Hope I’ve seen the last of that behavior. Missing my meeting wasn’t great, but in the scheme of things not such a biggie.

Seems similar to the Homelink one. Some date was installed on my car to get it working and it remained on 3.2.0 at the time.

Glad an update push fixed it though and that CC has the ability to do it.

Congrats!

I don't think I've yet seen a good photo of what the trailer electrical plug looks like on the back of the Gravity. Can you post a picture of that? I'm guessing that it's tucked away, perhaps behind a cover, since it hasn't been visible in any photo I've seen yet.
OK - so here are the pictures of the trailer hitch and the electrical plug. This is not a particularly easy trailer hitch to install - if you use this frequently you will likely begin to hate the engineer that designed this - honestly very challenging to get this installed.
I put a trailer tow ball into the receiver - and guess what? It doesn't fit correctly. My trailer hitch worked on the Tesla Cybertruck and a Porsche Cayenne I had before - it fit perfectly in these cars - in the Lucid receiver it DOES NOT FIT. Great - so likely will now need to buy a new ball or even better use my new R1S which is made for towing. Based on my experience here I would likely never use the Gravity to tow - it is a royal pain compared to every other car/SUV/truck I have ever used. This is a great passenger car - towing - in a pinch maybe - but not the best option.
If you look at the picture with the ball in the receiver you can see that the holes do NOT line up (IMG_6410). The receiver is not deep enough to take the ball I have....
lol this starts to sound really bad.....

And it can't even be used to haul more than 2 bikes. Hopefully someone will make an aftermarket hitch like they do for the Model X.

Curious thing about the picture above - they may be using a different trailer receiver from the receiver they supply with the tow package - this unit in the picture appears longer and of a somewhat different design. Of course I'm sure you can make this work well for you - its just not as simple as most trucks or SUVs. Primarily the constraint is around making the design very aerodynamic - which requires a somewhat compromised location of the assembly. This also makes installation a bit more difficult.

Thanks for the photos, that clarifies a lot!

It's interesting that they provide a 7 pin electrical connection. That typically means that the base vehicle has a braking controller, and also provides power to run and/or recharge the trailer's power system. Which goes a long way towards explaining why towing is a "coming soon" feature.

Having a short length limit for the receiver doesn't bother me too much, as I figure it's a one time annoyance to find the right hardware that fits. But I'm curious to hear more about what makes the hitch hard to install? From the look of it, I'm guessing there's something finicky about pushing it up into the socket and making sure it's secure? Plus having to lie on the ground, since it's all underneath the bumper?

That hitch mechanism looks identical to the model X one I have and use.

I guess they expect customers to use a trailer to haul their bikes. lol.
It is interesting how far from the vehicle the tow ball is. That would seem to violate the whole reason you can't put more than a 110lb bike rack on...
Looks like more than 7.5" I guess it shows no one reads the manual.

Don't do the extended hitch!

As the diagram in picture IMG_6410 shows the max distance from the hole to ball centerline is 7.5 inches. Your trailer picture looks to be approx 14 inches. This will decrease the max tong load on the receiver attachment about 1/3 depending on the exact dimensions.

I'm a mechanical engineer and I'll make a little diagram of what's happening for you. I need a few more dimensions, I'll make a picture for you to fill in.
