Gravity vs Model X

Wow. That is one heck of a terrible AI writing job if I ever read one.

Aw c'mon Joe. Is it any worse than watching an hour YouTube video for 10 minutes of content? 😜

Given the popularity of the SUV segment Lucid could do quite well prying people away from the Model X (Elon antics aside). Whilst it's not ugly by any means the X is just looking tired and a little outdated. The "refresh" didn't really do much to change that either given how long it's been out.

I'd be really surprised, shocked even, if the Gravity doesn't do well for Lucid.

The refresh did a few things, although it could have done more. Some basic things such as an A pillar or mirror blind spot indicator are still missing. Camera views are in the wrong place for when making turns, and unlike in the Lucid, where the camera view is a viable substitute for a mirror, in the Tesla, the perspective is different and doesn't give the same ability to judge distance.

That being said, I haven't seen the Gravity yet. I expect that I'd like it better, but I do have recent experience with the X. My father just got one. It's not that he expects it to be better than the Gravity, but it's been released. He's pushing 91 and couldn't afford to wait a few months for orders to open up, and still not have a release date. So I may end up inheriting it when my father feels too old to drive. It has a lot of nice features, which are mostly gimmicky rather than ones that truly make it functionally better.

I bet you those fart sounds are useful!

I owned a 2016 (Lemon) and 2017 Model X P100D - good car - kept it until warranty ran out in 2021 - no real problems - blistering acceleration, good 3 row for our family of 5 - but my wife made the decision to not pursue another one based on the following simple fact…

she was tired of being a public spectacle every time she opened the falcon wing doors - we suprisinglly had no problems with them functionally - they worked great the during our entire ownership period - but we could not get the past the "attention" that would be given to us every time we were using them…so we moved on to something else…

while Tesla pulled the FWD's "off" - I still think they did more harm than good long term - and its certainly the reason we did not purchase a replacement Model X

my $0.02

Do they really pull that much attention? It feels like as the Model X is 8 years old now, people should be over it by now.

I can not say today since I haven't owned an X since 2021 - but in 2021 when my wife and I were looking for the replacement vehicle they were still "an issue" - even in silly-con valley. Honestly that was the "major" reason in my wife's mind not to get another X - it was primarily her car, she put the most miles on it, and she really didn't like being the center of attention and the unwanted attention of strangers approaching her for questions and general admiration - she just wants to let the kids out and not have to field questions…so we moved on.

NOTE: my wife liked the car otherwise and her feedback only came to light when we were discussing replacing it - and honestly also surprised me as it had not been mentioned in the past - but in discussions it turns out this "was a thing" with my wife, and had been for some time - she just did not like having attention pulled onto her and her family doing routine daily activities…and basically you can't just go about your business in a Model X if you're popping off the FWD's in public spaces…

Not really. It's still kind of unique. I've seen a lot of them on the road, but in all that time I've only seen the doors open twice. Once in a parking lot, and once last month when a friend bought one and all of us asked her to show us the doors.

What did you get as a replacement back in 2021?

What did you get as a replacement back in 2021?
Cayenne TurboS eHybrid - there were not good/luxury BEV SUV's in 2021 - plan was to drive it until warranty runs out and get back into a full BEV when there were more options - love the car - hate the ICE con's (in pros/cons)…Cayenne's been great but still an ICE vs. BEV drive train, but over 1/2 the 38k miles have been electric…so there is that - we drive around in terms of daily errands mostly on EV power - but I hate gaming the hybrid with limited range to avoid starting the gas motor - full BEV is where I want to be for a daily driver - we're back to one full BEV - so we're working on the wife's next car which we don't want to be an ICE…

so we're looking to replace it now that there are better choices - both wife and I prefer an EV and how they drive vs. ICE…but choices are still elusive…but getting better.

will pull the trigger mid 2026 - and gravity is a possibility…

No matter how they update X, it's a shell on S, hardly a SUV.
True but not everybody needs a true SUV. My father got one a few months ago because he's 91 years old, felt too old to wait for the Gravity, wanted more headroom so he didn't have to bend to get in, and wanted air suspension that could lower so my mom can get in more easily. He wanted summon so he didn't have to squeeze into the door in a tight garage. As far as it being an SUV, I don't think he ever had more that four people in it at any given time, but they could get in easily.

It comes down to what people really need, and the Gravity will check a lot of boxes for a lot of people. There are those who say it looks like a minivan as if there's something wrong with that, but these days it's really crossover vehicles that people want, that companies are making, and that are being called SUVs for marketing purposes. As far as a traditional SUV with a truck chassis that's good for off road use, few people need that or would give up everything they really need to get that.

I'd take a Gravity over a Model X but I'll probably end up having a Model X within the next decade.

We had one early on in its life cycle. When picking my kids up from elementary school other kids would walk by and scream into the car how awesome they thought it was. This happened nearly daily.

I enjoyed the FWD when my kids were in car seats but unlike you had a lot of issues with them sensing obstructions and not working properly. We used to eat a restaurant regularly that had underground parking and the doors refused to open in the garage despite the ceiling being clearly tall enough. I also had the issue where extended sun exposure would cause a read error in the door sensors. So if you parked the wrong way, the door facing the sun wouldn’t open.

The thing that I’m most looking forward to with the Gravity is getting back the extended windshield that goes over my head. I’m taller than average and I hate having to scrunch down to see traffic lights and such.

Funny (and informative) short video asking if you would get a Gravity over Model X:
