NACS Megathread

I have encountered this a couple of times. It is not normal and should not be needed for plug and charge. I believe the issue is caused by a back end communication issue on the Tesla SC side. Another example where Tesla SCs are not as good as many people suggest.
I thought it might be a temporary glitch at first but it has happened at every Tesla SC over the past 10 months (about 7 times total). Ultimately it is not a big deal as it is easier to pull up the Lucid app than it would be to download and set up another app. EA chargers are very scarce here in Texas.

Imagine that. Something from Tesla isn’t as good as it’s hyped up to be. Color me shocked.

To be fair, I am 90% certain that the fault for my plug and charge issues lies with Lucid.

Don’t get me wrong; I’m happy to have the extra option of Supercharger locations for my Gravity. More options is always better. But it’s far from my preferred option at this point. Speeds have been generally a bit slower, and I’ve encountered more broken chargers in the last month than I was expecting compared to EA. Not to mention it’s more expensive.

And then there’s having to figure out which stations allow non-Teslas. Which ones actually have newer equipment that can charge a high voltage car faster. It’s fine. All part of careful planning. But far from the utopia many folks were suggesting at the beginning of this thread.

I make heavy use of the Tesla website FIND US map, setting the filters for NACS Partner and Other EVs (and excluding Teslas). I save that page as an icon on my phone for quick reference. It's the most accurate and definitive way to tell.

Here in Texas I tend to stick with Buccee’s when roadtripping. Most of the big Buccee’s on the interstates have huge banks of Tesla SCs and many also have Mercedes new high voltage DCFCs. I rarely roll in at low charge but usually closer to 40-50% while stopping for bathroom and refreshment breaks. At that SOC, high voltage does not help, so I just want something that is simple plug and charge to top up and get to the bathroom. If I happened to be down around 5-10% SOC, I can opt for the Mercedes chargers.

Seamless plug and charge is also important for the rare time my wife (who is still EV reluctant) might roadtrip the Gravity. She knows about the probability of having to open and verify stall on the Lucid app but bitches about the process.

Plug & Charge is great, but sadly, I rarely get to use it. It doesn't work on Ionna yet (my #1 choice), and for both EA and SC, we road trip so much that it makes more sense to pay for the membership discounts to cut ~25% off the rates. We have to use the apps for that.

I look forward to the day they finally integrate those. Or better yet, ditch those membership plans altogether and just charge a fair and reasonable rate for everyone.

Sadly you know that'll never happen.
Perhaps. I suspect Tesla will always give their own vehicles a discount, but that's automatic and doesn't apply to us. I could maybe see the day when DCFC matures more toward the long-proven gasoline model (the same price for everyone). Gas has a few membership-like discounts sometimes too (like grocery stores pumps that give discounts for racking up purchases on their loyalty card), but that's not quite the same thing, and not nearly as widespread. And it's usually not a massive 25%. Costco and Sam's Club build in lower prices but don't sell gas to non-members at all.

Ionna has no membership discount and they're becoming the new standard. Walmart's new network is offering a 10% discount for buying their broader membership, but that's not nearly as bad. At 10%, it takes more like 3-4 charges to break even. But at 25% it often only takes 1, compelling me to have to get the membership and give up P&C.

Glad to see Ionna building even more aggressively along the east coast route. I've seriously never had a bad experience and their prices seem the best. What is not to like.

Yeah, it should be a much different charging landscape in a year or two between Walmart's expansion and Ionna's expansion with partnerships w Pilot and others.

Ionna is awesome. But for best pricing, it will be hard to compete with Walmart if they start giving discounts like ones mentioned above.
