Hands free Drive Assist! Jul 30. Air first!

Well, I am hoping the update will include return or refinement of the previous version of Drive Assist and NOT the current 2.7.0-2.7.1 versions. As I have mentioned previously, I feel like it has taken a step back to the jerky, "nibbling" steering and rather severe lane ping-ponging that was indicative of the early days.
funny .. I got my AT in Dec 24 and that version of drive assist (as it's now called) wasn't good. I got my cameras calibrated and it got much better. then they did the april / may (??) big release and it was a dramatic improvement. is quite good imo, very smooth. northeast US. I wonder whether it's the model year or the road (or both?) that seems to cause variability? I could use my version hands-free if that's the only change they make (which I suspect it is).

Been driving with it engaged more often than usual to put it through its paces before hands free arrives. Not a single issue on a ~25 mile drive along hwy 287 and rt80 in northern NJ. 2.7.1, '22 AGT. It was VERY smooth on the corner entry and exit. The lane changes are a tad more aggressive than I would like (compared to the smoothness of the cornering). My spouse looks up after an automated lane change and often says, "why don't you just drive the car?" not knowing that prior to the lane change, the car had been driving for a very long time and she really couldn't tell.

I'm stunned at the reports of 'hell no I won't let go of the wheel'.....very different experience for sure. I really wish I understood what was causing it in those cases.

The previous version of DA was smoother. You can feel it take a set on gentle curves instead of nibbling at it and the current version ping pongs more than the previous version.
In short, I feel like they rolled it back with the last update...perhaps by accident? No idea, but I hope hands free update evolved back to the smooth version.

This is great news! Except -- does anyone else have this problem? I'm tall and the dash cameras don't seem to see my face and when I turn the monitor on, it thinks I'm asleep or not even there. If I lower the seat, it is really uncomfortable. Or is it the sunglasses? which is really silly. who doesn't wear sunglasses when driving?

It's most likely your steering wheel position. The camera is behind the steering wheel. make sure it has a direct line of sight to your face.

If you're taller, you may have to set the wheel a bit lower than you are used to.

I had the FSD with my previous Model S, but so far despite having the DD pro in our Lucid Air, we have not used it due to lack of confidence in its safety and handling. Has anyone used the DD Pro and had good experience with that?

The camera is behind the steering wheel
To be a bit more precise, the camera is just above where the steering wheel mount enters the dashboard. Once you identify where it is, you can set the steering wheel height and/or your seat height so that you can see the camera, and it can see you!

(and yes, that creates some trade-offs, especially with being able to see the full speed read out when you activate cruise control….. but I find I’m OK with seeing just the bottom of those numbers, with a minimal dip of the head if I have any question)

yes, northeast US, got my AT last december. I use it when I can, I'm good with it, especially after the last update, it's good (and after I got my cameras calibrated which helped a lot .. did that before the big update we got 2 months ago). only thing it does that I don't like is it will sometimes try to follow the highway exit if I'm in the right lane, rather than defaulting to staying on the highway. but, I'm aware of that and sometimes am in the right and sometimes in the center late.

Yes, use it daily.

What exactly are they adding that I have not had for a year - 20 seconds of hands free now and lane change not really easy to activate

I activate auto lane change by holding the turn signal stalk in the appropriate direction until the lane change is activated. Suspect there is a slight delay built in so it isn't activated when you aren't expecting.

It’s 15 seconds now before it nags you. It will be “unlimited” as long as your eyes are on the road.

Lane change is very easy to activate. In fact, there are two settings for it now - short and long activation. If you want it easier to activate, switch it to short activation.

I use it frequently, no issues.

Add me to the list of people who have no issues with it. I have to say, it does seem overly conservative to not even engage a feature for fear that it won't work perfectly. Keep in mind, you're not abdicating all responsibility to the car, with no way to take control.

Case in point, an 18 wheeler departed from it's lane just as we were overtaking it while using Drive Assist. I grabbed the wheel and aggressively steered to the far left of my lane and slightly onto the shoulder, which, presumably, disconnect Drive Assist (I didn't give it a shred of thought). Simultaneously, I hammered down the throttle to get outta here.

Rest assured, if you don't like what you're seeing, disengaging is trivial. Tap the break, turn the wheel hard, or disengage it through either of the two buttons on the lower left of the wheel.

It seems odd to not test out a feature for fear that it won't work perfectly. Hopefully this will encourage you to give it a try and form your own opinion about its operation.

I can't speak for others, but my Audi had an excellent adaptive cruise control. Very, very solid, never twitchy. It was rock solid on the highway. I used that thing all the time. My AGT, in 10 minutes of driving, did several puzzling/troubling things: it left the left side of the passing lane, it started to slow (briefly) twice--both times when passing someone pulling a trailer, and while I wouldn't call it ping-ponging, it came very close to the center/left lane lines a few times. I will definitely use it again, but only in light traffic for now.

Hands off with this version? No way--I need to feel what the car is doing.

You need calibration or something else is wrong. Mine stays centered flawlessly, and that is the expected behavior. If it is bouncing between lanes or especially *leaving* the lane, something is wrong with your car.

Yes, I use it almost everyday. It is very good and I have lots of confidence in it.

Just wondering and curious which Audi model, and what trim? Thanks.

I wouldn't call it bouncing. It is more like it testing the limits of the lane. It def wanders more within the lane than my Audi did. Perhaps that's how its designed, or maybe the sensors need some tweaking. Hard to know.

I was on the highway again today and it again tried to leave my lane. It occurred directly opposite an off ramp (which may have been a similar condition to the last time it happened). This time there was a car passing me on the left, so I had to correct instead of seeing how far the car would go on its own.

I was a little more comfortable with it today. A little. 😊

Do we know if there is going to be a software update to the ADAS beyond removing the "hands on" restriction on July 30th?
