Gravity
I just received my Gravity a few days ago and absolutely LOVE the heads-up display for navigation—it’s so much better than glancing at the screens for turns.

That said, I’ve noticed a few things:
  • I’m 6 ft tall and have the HUD set to its lowest position, but it still feels high. Why would anyone want to raise it even higher and have it directly in their line of sight? That doesn’t seem safe. I wish the display could go even lower.
  • The display is very slightly blurry unless I tilt my head to the left, which makes it clearer. Has anyone else experienced this? What's odd is that sometimes the display seems clear for a few minutes. I'm not sure if I just get used to the fuzziness or what.
  • At night, the HUD gets REALLY dim. I also see it slightly adjusting brightness randomly as well. Is that normal? I have it set to the highest brightness.

Would love to hear if others have similar experiences or any tips to improve clarity and brightness.

AR. The AR hud will likely require different positioning because it will “paint the road” rather than being just text in your line of sight, so to speak. It’s just not there yet.

I'm 6'2" and eded up setting the HUD to just a smidge off the bottom and then raised my seat to get the display a bit lower in my field of view. Love it by the way, crisp display and not to much info to clutter up the windshield.

That's good to know. I'm going to have one of the techs just verify mine is correct. I hope they keep improving it with updates!

I'm 6'4", seat in lowest position. HUD slightly up from bottom. It looks like about a foot up from the hood or projecting our in front of the car. At highway speed it's great position but when traffic is slower it's on the trunk of the SUV in front of me....

I agree it's blurry and gives me eye strain. If I close one eye it's sharp but I can see double for the MPH if I glaze my eyes at all. I have to focus hard on it. Hoping this is temporary. Or maybe a calibration issue.

Photo for position only since it doesn't accurately reflect the focus issue I experience. The blue distortion on the windshield is photo artifact. I don't have any blue ghost or oval.

I posted this in The Gravity Delivery Discussion Thread, but it would be more appropriate here:

Mine is also not level. It’s really annoying. In 3d projections to get the proper depth, you need to project slight offset images to each eye. But with a tilted image, you need to tilt your head. This would be somewhat fine if the reflective surface was flat and perfectly vertical. The windshield is not only non-vertical, but also curved. This causes multiple vergence (eye rotation to align gaze on the same 3D point in space) issues. Also bumps in road cause the display image to jiggle - maybe they have not tightened it down properly or have soft bushings.

I found that, for me, the display looks best at the highest setting. But maybe I need to try the lowest setting and adjust the display hight accordingly.

Yes!! I thought something might have just been wrong with my eyes, but for me also it’s hard to focus with 2 eyes but if I close 1 eye it’s razor sharp!

I find sometimes it's super sharp and other times it's a little blurry and have just put it down to it still being a work in progress. I've caught it rebooting multiple times when entering the car so for now I'm just putting it all down to early rollout quirks.

HUD Lens dirty

I suggest everyone look through the windshield with a flashlight and take a look at their HUD lens. Mine was pretty dirty. I cleaned it with a lint-free microfiber cloth, but it seems a lot of the dirt is under the lens. The lens is curved soft plastic, so don’t push hard. This may or may not be contributing to the artifacts. Since there doesn’t seem to be a way to remove the lens to clean the bottom side, I’ll have to live with it. It’s this kind of attention to detail that’s frustrating.

I noticed that after picking up my car, there were several little places that were never cleaned. The HUD was one of them. I used some window cleaner on a microfiber cloth and removed the dirt. It didn’t really make any difference as far as the image was concerned. I’ll have to try the flashlight trick and see if there’s dirt under the housing.

I just noticed after driving 100 miles that the image considerably improved. Since the image is slightly tilted, one of my eyes has to not only look apart, but also look down relative to the other eye. It’s easy to see how the images are not lined up in the horizontal plane. If you look through each eye separately, especially at the speed limit on the right, you’ll see that the images are not horizontally aligned next to each other. One images slightly higher or lower than the other. My left eye now has a lot more eye strain than my right eye.

Maybe this is mentioned later in this thread, but, have you tried blowing the dust out with a squeeze bulb or a can of pressurized air like that used to blow out computer keyboards?

I have not hit it with any pressurized air.

My HUD is very blurry too. I'm going to have service look at it. If it is a fundamental issue, then I will regret paying for the technology package, since I have it turned off!

Alex Dykes at Autos by Alex did a YT review of the Cadillac Vistiq the other day and said similar things about their (also huge) HUD. Wonder if it's the same vendor.

Still waiting on his review of the Gravity, but he does have thoughts and compares the Vistiq against it if anyone is interested.

FYI. I wrote customer care/support yesterday asking about the glare (not the blurriness). Specifically:

1. If there is an existing TSB, retrofit, or updated trim piece planned

2. if Lucid has an approved mitigation (e.g., matte treatment)

3. If this feedback can be escalated to engineering for review

We’ll see if they respond.

Seems enough folks are dealing with HUD issues either with a glare, blue hue, or blurry image.

The panoramic/anamorphic HUD is a patented design by Lucid. Maybe they use the same manufacturer, but the design would be different unless they have licensed it out to someone else.

thanks, didn't know that.

So far I am not seeing anything worth filing a patent on.

You do realize the current iteration of the HUD is a temporary one and the AR features are coming later, right?
