They did have both the Fob and card. They checked at the beginning of each drive to be certain we could shift to drive. I had the impression they were having frequent problems and the card was seeing them through.
Unless the SA had a Faraday pouch or some other way of verifying the card was actually being read,, the fob signal was allowing the car to be driven.

They probably had already verified the functioning of the cards prior to the start of test drives and had them along as backup.
 
It may well have been a belt & suspenders situation, but they were very particular about where to place the card. And I believe at the start of one of the drives we got the "key not detected" message and they fiddled with the card key to correct it.
