EZPass Mounting Location in the Gravity

Not wanting to stick my EZ Pass transponder to the windshield glass, I had it sliding around on the dash until I realized there's a perfect sized depressed area of the dash about in the middle of the Clear View screen on the windshield side of the screen. Completely out of view and works fine. FWIW

Does EZPass use different technology than Fastrak?

We drove up and down the Hwy 73 Toll Road in Orange County, CA last weekend with the Fastrak on the dashboard. It didn't register - they charged us via our license plate.

And now that my curiosity is peeked, (or peaked?), I looked into both Fastrak and E-ZPass. Quite different looking items both using RFID technology. My somewhat older NH version is a 3"x4"x3/4" plastic box with a 10 year battery, apparently. And, it "must be mounted behind and to the right of the rear view mirror on the windshield". Oops. But mine has been successfully read although they warn that the readings my be sporadic if not mounted to the windshield. 🤷‍♂️

EZPass, IPASS, FastTrak all use a very similar toll reading technology and the upper mount area of the windshield (where Lucid does not have specific UV shielding tech) will provide good coverage for RFID reception. Yes, but what @illopp00 is saying is they put the IPASS sticker below , they are not able to be taken off and replaced, you have to order a new one to remount it.

It may also be getting read through the quarter-window; those are not metallic tint. So if you have it close enough to there, it may work. But as you said, it will not be as consistent as if you mounted it properly to the right of the camera housing. Otherwise, you may heva different iteration of the windshield, potentially, without the metallic tint.

Same thing was true on the early Airs; you had to have it mounted in a specific spot. Eventually, later iterations of the windshield used non-metallic tint.

Just an update, using the I-PASS sticker on the Pass Holder suction mount linked above, placed in the area just right of the camera ( you can see this area if you shine light as it has almost like a bubble pattern carve out) , my I-PASS sticker wasr recognized in the Open Road I294 tolls and immediately hit my account on a trip to the burbs today.

Not my favorite transponder location as it's very noticable area, but indeed does work.
 
Thanks to the groups advice, I consider this solved with that combination of the little holder and location. I had to look very close, there is a square 'cut-out' in the windscreen tint that is a like a grid/matrix pattern. Like @jace said, it's not the most pretty but it did work. Now I wonder what will happen to all the other tolls that didn't register and don't show up in my IPASS account:P

I bought the Amazon holder with the suction inserts, seams bulky. Will probably just use the sticker. The tip of looking at the window in the sunlight from the outside is very helpful to seeing where to mount the sticker on the inside. 🤓

I think the word you want is “piqued”. As in, your curiosity was “prodded at”.
 
I had PPF applied to my windshield on the exterior, and tint applied inside. Will this affect the ability of my RFID to be read?
 
No, but cops in California will love to write you a ticket for the windshield tint.
I’m not worried, it’s 70% tint. I was more interested in the so-called heat rejection properties than actually darkening the interior.

Yes EzPass (IAG) tags are different from Fastrak. They all build on the RFID technology but use different toll protocols. So yeah you cannot use your EzPass tag in California and you said you had it on the dashboard, doesn't surprise me it didn't read.
 
Validated! Checked my Illinois tollway account and see the toll charge after I attached the sticker. Shining the phone light to the left of the mirror ( from the outside,) as per this forum tip was very helpful.
