Let me know if any of you can relate to this situation. You find yourself in a new relationship, it’s something you’ve never experienced before. Fresh, exciting, raw, powerful, euphoric. An experience that takes you by surprise and never lets go. Then, after a few years of the relationship, through its ups and its down. Chaos, uncertainty, falling out of love then back into love, only to find yourself at a crossroads. Do you continue to ride the line of torturous love or call it quits? But you can’t quit, because every damn time you are together, all those initial feelings come flooding back to you and you remember why you started this relationship in the first place.
But then, something catches your eye. A new infatuation, another uncertainty, yet you can’t seem to pull away. You are drawn in, almost as if there is a gravity pulling you closer and when you finally get close enough, you don’t have enough willpower to stay away. You give into your wants, your needs, your desire for something new, something fresh. The excitement eats at you, makes your mind wander, imagining a world full of hope, love, and longing. Until that moment, when you take that plunge and let Gravity take over.
This has been my experience with the Air and the Gravity. It’s not just a new shiny toy to play with, but an entirely new experience. The Gravity is really Air 2.0, where everything feels slightly (sometimes immensely) better and more complete. Don’t get me wrong, I have loved my Air for the past 3.5 years, but that doesn’t mean it was the perfect pairing. With Gravity, I feel like I don’t want any other car. Everything about it feels right.
Gravity improves upon the Air in ways I wasn’t sure I thought I needed, but now that I have lived with it for the past month, it is hard to go back. The squircle, which I thought was just absurd as first, I want in every car I drive. The touchpads on the steering squircle, belong in every car moving forward. The beautiful display gives all the info you NEED, and that little bit extra you might want. Driving position is fantastic, the UX/UI is beautiful and useful and right where you need it to be. The seats are just as amazing as the Air, but because the Gravity rides higher, it just makes you feel more in control like overseeing your domain on the road.
The ride, oh the ride, is so lovely and compliant and comfortable. The Air was great, beautiful chassis tuning, otherworldly handling, but somehow the Gravity feels better in ways that are hard to describe. The air suspension does wonders at absorbing the road. The chassis still makes you feel connected, but at the same time, withdrawn from the harshness of the road. The different drive modes subtlety change the driving dynamics and give you a range of extreme comfort to racecar worthy handling. Somehow this behemoth of a car feels nimble in corners and small and agile at low speeds. When I first got the Air, I felt the car did a superb job of making it feel like you weren’t speeding. The Gravity takes that feeling to the next level and it is even harder to not drive the Gravity way past the speed limit. Between the car smoothing the pavement out, the NVH in the Gravity is so much better than the Air.
The space concept. Lucid, I love the ability to be able to replace my minivan with this wonderful SUV that can take my entire family and all the requisite gear to all the events we attend. No other vehicle can do it in as much comfort or style as the Gravity. Endless possibilities with the Gravity compared to the very capable, but vertically challenged Air, are now available to plan for the family.
Just like the Air, the Gravity has its own share of quirks. The doors have a delay when opening because of the frameless glass. The 3rd row storage mechanism is probably the least engineered part of the car. I have driven this car for a month and when I make turns, I hear random beeps that I still can’t figure out what they are for. I wish the back cover for the subtrunk was divided in half so I can stow 1 seat and put stuff on top of that stowed seat, but now I can’t access my sutrunk without moving that stuff.
But, the Gravity makes me not want to drive my Air anymore. My first Lucid, I am neglecting her, because the Gravity just makes more sense. It’s not that the Air isn’t wonderful and great and deserving, but for me, the pairing with the Gravity is just a better fit. I still love my Air though, you never forget your first love.
