Colder weather folks, what are you doing for wheels/tires?

I do recall reading somewhere that Lucid Air might have the same wheel specs and offsets as Tesla Model S. Are any of the owners able to confirm that? Obviously that would really open up options for aftermarket wheels/winter tires.

You might be remembering a post I put up in which I speculated that the wheel specs might be the same as the Model S. However, I'm not at all sure.

"Dreamed" was going to change the wheels on her car and have the shop measure the wheel specs, possibly to try out the "New Aero" forged wheels that were designed for the Model S. However, she has disappeared from the forums.
 
Update on my friend's need to get winter tires for New York:

Lucid has rethought their original quote for $10,000 and contacted him to say they will install a set of 19" aero wheels and all-season tires on his car for $3,000. He's very happy with the outcome.

Rethought? Hmm, you're being kind. Perhaps they read some of the posts here. As I said, their original quote was highway robbery. Glad to see someone at Lucid came to their senses. $3,000 seems reasonable for a set of 4.

$10k for 19"??? Even forged wheels are cheaper but not so bad since they would mount for free:D

Lucid wheels are forged. ... $2500 for a forged wheel is not a high price.

Borski mentioned it's wheel + tire. That is an entirely reasonable price for a forged wheel alone.



forgot about the TPMS issue which is a pain : guess that's why Lucid offers mounting service.

now is the TPMS going to go afoul on me every time i swap-out wheels ?

I was getting warnings on a 328 but tires checked OK on 3 different gauges 3 different times. Discovered that the TPMS (on this '14 BMW 328ix) can be "reset" to "new" values from the (very complicated) menu ... although how I got to that screen remains a mystery.

The only wheel indicated on the Lucid website as forged is the 21" Dream Edition wheel. The rest of the Lucid wheels are not described on the website as forged. However, the Sapphire will also have a forged wheel.

A sales rep at a Lucid Design Studio once told me he thought they were all forged, but it turned out he was confusing "forge casting" with truly forged wheels. Forge casting is more of a misleading marketing term than a real thing. It simply means the liquid alloy is injected into the mold under pressure. It does produce a stronger wheel than atmospheric casting, but it does not produce the strength of true forging.
 
I've always run all season tires despite being in an area that gets snow in winter, mainly because we also have an SUV that we can use in heavier snow. I'm ordering a Touring with 20" wheels and was planning to swap the tires with Michelin all seasons immediately after delivery. Has anyone had any noise issues using non-OEM tires like the Michelin Pilot Sport all seasons?
 
I was looking at the 19 " wheel spec: A6061 T6 10,000 TON FORGED

... thought that meant the wheel ingot was smashed with 10,000 tons of force to make a nice billet for milling.

I hate that words in English don't mean what they used to. So now "forged" means "cast" ?
 
Has anybody looked at switching to all-season tires on the 21's? Tire Rack shows a Pilot Sport All Season 4 when you search on a Lucid.
 
IOpting for 21" wheels on your DE P is a bold choice, and while they can enhance aesthetics and handling, they may be more susceptible to pothole damage. As you mentioned, switching to all-season (AS) tires for the Northeast winter is a wise decision. The Michelin X-Ice is indeed a highly regarded tire known for its performance and grip.
If there have a lot of tire available for snow/winter but cold weather tire selection is very important. Although Blizzak and Michelin tires are little bit expensive but for better grip, longer and durable use they are must be considereble.
 
Do we have any info on how much of a range hit different models of winter tire will give?

I'm looking at the blizzak lm005 or the Michelin xice. Both have a max load of 1,874 so it should be fine with our cars.

This info is for our 19" wheels. That BLizzak gets mah ratings. The Michelin X-Ice is nice, well regarded BUT only a H rated speed tire - not a performance winter tire - more of a: really really rotten winter snow and ice tire. The VREDESTEIN WINTRAC PRO is an excellent high performance winter tire, great ratings. Fantastic company. All these tires are 102 load ratings - great for our cars. Seems the highly rated Mich Pilot Alpin 5 high performance winter tires is out of stock.

Oh nice, The vredesteins weren't really on my radar. I'll check those out. I assume if they can deal with CO winters than NH shouldn't be an issue. hows the range hit ?

No idea on range hit. My first winter with a BEV. To be honest, with very cold temps, shitty weather, snow ice, slush, heater use, the tires will be the least of the issues. I am looking forward to preheating the Lucid at 7 am when it's 15f.

Note, we don't play az much attention to ice ratings in Colorado vs NE. I remember doing half dozen 360s on the Mass Pike on winter.
 
I went through not only a road trip from Coast to coast last winter in sub 10 degree F
But also I live in Utah and last year we has the worst winter in over 30 years.
All season 19" did phenomenal. So I wouldn't worry too much, the traction control in the car is amazing.
Also the weight helps it be more planted.

Only hard part is keeping the car clean (and also be very careful of ice and snow that's too tall for the bumper)

I had the same experience in Idaho last winter. Incessant snow , sometimes very deep , and the all seasons on 19 inch wheels performed admirably. I am still thinking about getting snow tires but am not sure it’s absolutely necessary. The worst thing about driving in winter was the car looking like crap!!! Sad to think it’s just around the corner .😳😳😳

During the pandemic, I left the all season Conti DWS 06+ tires on my Audi S7 all winter, did mount the winter Blizzaks, and did just fine - due in large part to the quattro AWD and its 4000lbs. I agree with @stratus and @Volund that it will work fine. That said, IF YOU NEED IT, using a dedicated high performance winter tire is an eye opener - especially in 0F weather. The joke in Colorado is that some of the high performance winter tires handle so well, people leave them longer than they should. That never happened 30 years ago with winter tires.

But with my 21" Pirelli summer tires, I needed something for winter and opted for a set of 19" with winter tires to go to the other side. It was 36 at 5am this morning in Vail - the winter tires will be going on in a month -- or less.

This approach actually makes sense, if you have 21", then the winter range lost would be quite more significant, so putting on 19" and winter, would get you all that lost range back. So that's smart

I am afraid to look at my range. Going from 5000ft to 9000 ft, up and over two 10000ft. passes twice a week destroys range. I am just happy it's a blast to drive. And I can do the 110 easily in one charge.

No matter how scary the range gets when going up the mountain, I always do so well on the way down that it works itself out. So I try not to panic about it.
