Lucid CEO Says Gravity Hands-Free Driving Is ‘Few Weeks Away’ After Delay

You get what you get and you don’t get upset. It’s like I tell my kids. Or “control the controllables” for those who prefer business.

We have zero control over these features, what Lucid promises or doesn’t, etc. Anyone owning the Gravity now bought it knowing some features were TBD. As I always say here, caveat emptor.

Still loving my car. Main issue for months was fob, but it’s good now, so I focus on enjoying the drive!
This isn’t about people being upset for no reason, it’s about continued missed commitments. Lucid said hands-free drive assist would arrive by the end of 2025, It didn’t. Then it became Q2 to then became “a few weeks.”. Now it’s showing Q3. That’s not a minor delay, it's a moving target and they don't have the common decency to keep owners informed, expecting them to piece together bits of information from forums, social media, etc.

Telling people to just “accept it” ignores the fact that this was a promised feature tied to a flagship vehicle that’s been in production since December 2024. Owners aren’t asking for something new, they’re asking for what was already communicated.

You can enjoy the car, sure, I do as well! But brushing this off like it’s no big deal is exactly how companies normalize overpromising and underdelivering.

Like I said, hands free driving is overrated…anyone expecting that solved soon will be very disappointed , including Tesla owners.

Who cares if it's overrated or not, you completely missed the point of the comment.

Yeah, these delays are frustrating, but if I were their CTO, I'd lock down the entire software team until there's no more problems with opening and closing doors. A car that people can't reliably operate their f*ng doors will bankrupt this company.

I agree with you, fwiw. But my issue is with the communication, not the delays, personally.

I don’t disagree with you, and I don’t understand how folks can be surprised when Lucid misses a deadline and doesn’t communicate. That’s how they operate. I’ve not been around as long as others here, but it seems this is how they’ve operated for a long time. Do I agree with it? No. Do I expect it to change? No. Is there anything I can do about it? No.

So I guess I was trying to say I am personally trying not to be continually disappointed by expecting the next update - whatever the feature - to be accurate with respect to timing.

Ultimately, given their track record, I think they’d be better off simply saying “future update” with no timing.

You are right, frustrating but not surprising. Seems rooted in company culture.

Not a big deal, so what if they missed a deadline. Anyone believing they can achive these deadlines with autonomy are very gullible. Not even Tesla reached its own deadlines. This is the nature of the business, and not just confined to Lucid. Wish people would just stop complaining about this all the time. Autonomy in customer cars is YEARS away. No matter what any car company says. Just take it with a pinch of salt and go enjoy your life instead of being frustrated by it.

we’re talking about the hands-free supervised driving which a number of automakers are offering, it’s nothing new and impossible. Stop trying to derail the thread and dragging in full on autonomy / L4 into it.

Agree. Also, Lucid has this feature for the Air, so it’s imminently possible.

The timing piece and promises…I already commented on that.

Sounds like Lucid's missed commitments on advertised features is a continuing saga from the Air to now Gravity. Lucid is way behind competition on delivering these features.

Still, what’s a few months delay, big deal! I’m sure they had bugs they need to fix.

So they release it incomplete and then everyone complains it’s buggy!

They don’t release it and everyone complains.

Lucid is a small company, with a small software team. In the meantime, I suggest those complaining to drive their car like the 99% others in this world.

I would rather they take their time and release when they are perfectly happy with it. Don’t cave in to pressure from consumers.

rofl

no consumer ever pressured them to sell a half assed car, they pressured themselves.
That’s not quite fair; it is far, far, from a half-assed car. Yes, there are some features that need improvement and some that should be out that aren’t; I do not agree with @gaskiller’s take that any amount of time is fine.

That said, it is not a half-assed car. It is, by most metrics, still the best car in its class. It just also needs continuously improving software.

If I understand this right, it suggests that autopark within a space with just lines occurs now, which was a big not even close during my test drive, but maybe that has changed in some of the recent software updates and is working now? But this will all probably be implemented before the Tesla v2 roadster! 🤣

Hmm. You make more excuses for Lucid and the timelines. This certainly matters for customers who purchased these cars expecting it or new customers coming from other brands that already have this. Rivian is a small company too and they seem to be doing just fine with their promised features.

It is a competitive market, getting even more competitive with established car brands who have full featured software. Small is not a good excuse, at least for me and other people I know. 🙂

When I can't park my own car, please take away the keys - I shouldn't be driving anymore...
Or, let me keep the fob, because it won't..... wait, too soon?

While I want it to be clear that I agree with you, it’s worth noting that Rivian has almost 15k employees, and Lucid has about 7k, so Rivian is not quite as small as Lucid.

Also, it’s worth noting that Rivian has also not delivered all of the features they’ve promised. The Rivian forums are chock full of complaints that their cars still don’t have V2V, V2H, “autonomy” for ADAS including auto park and “ramp to ramp”, and so on.

Those same forums also have constant complaints about software updates not being issued to all the cars immediately, and Connect+ subscribers complaining they weren’t given the updates immediately despite being told they’d be “prioritized” and you’ll find others saying “have you ever distributed software over the air to thousands of computers” etc.

You might be surprised at just how similar some of the commentary is across car forums. This 22 page thread about “WHERE IS MY UPDATE” is a familiar read: https://www.rivianforums.com/forum/...ation-and-date-you-received.53791/post-927005

This thread may also look familiar: https://www.rivianforums.com/forum/threads/autonomy-day-lane-change-and-the-myth-of-“buy-what-it-has-today”.53558/post-912125

A choice quote: “Absolutely buy for what it can do now, not what is promised.”

🤷‍♂️

I am not trying to engage in whataboutism; I am just saying that “Rivian seems to be doing just fine with their promised features” is not as true as you might think.
