Gravity Bugs / Issues

Wow. I just spent the afternoon reading all 70 pages of this thread. My inside SA called me this weekend to tell me that my DE was in production and VIN assigned. I’m now worried what I’ve signed up for. I’m a former electrical engineer and feel I’m pretty technically proficient, but some of these problems are alarming, particularly the HUD, GPS, and FDU issues. The key fobs and key cards not working consistently add insult to injury. I have a lift in my a garage and spent the last 20 years turning the wrenches on my BMW M5 before it was totaled. I was looking forward to my first EV experience and not having to deal with all the maintenance issues of an ICE car. Now I’m not so sure what I’ve gotten myself into. I can accept a few software glitches and OTA updates, but some of these issues should not be slipping through the manufacturing, QA, and PDI processes. I mean, unlocking and starting the car is Automotive 101. That is not new technology. I will be watching carefully to see how Lucid handles @hmp10’s issues.

Relax! This is the bugs/issues thread so you're going to see the worst of everything, as well as everyone trying to guess what's wrong.

I expect everything will be fine with your Gravity, and hopefully the key issue will be squashed before you take delivery.

As others have said, if you just read this thread, you’re getting a skewed view as it’s focused on bugs. I think the vast majority of folks have minor bugs, if they have any. And, once you’re driving, you forget about them in he moment.

I had an M3 years ago and this Gravity isn’t an M3, but it drives on rails and is an amazing car. If/when there’s an issue, Lucid has been FAR more helpful and proactive and responsive than Tesla or Rivian ever were for me.

Addidng to the chorus that this is where we come to list issues IF we have a problem. Every vehicle forum has it. If that was all you based your opinion on, you'd be walking instead of driving anything. You will be quite happy with your Gravity and if you do run into any issues, this is where you can come to share.

Thank you all for reminding me every car has its nits. My M5 certainly had a few known issues, and the messages boards were very helpful in solving them.

I have now experienced the stuck image on camera screen that @hmp10 was showing.

When I reverse, it showed me a static image for the rear camera from something on the freeway I was driving probably 10-15 mins ago. confuses me for a sec. Then I have to do what the dinosaurs did, I have to look at my rear-view mirror and judge distance while reversing.

Added this to my list for service center when I can get an appointment.

I think the FDU issue you referenced was mine, and, in my opinion, probably the the most problematic issue to worry about. Local service area replaced the unit and they went out of their way to get the car back to me outside of business hours on the weekend (thank you Russell!). I have had zero problems with car since then and it is truly the most amazing vehicle to drive, all ICE/EV/sedan/SUVs included. Never driven an F1 car but the GDE is about as close as an SUV can get. I’ll admit that I am building up my trust in the car for a long road trip but, wow, these cars are incomparable. When Lucid fixes the weird software issues, it’ll be the gold standard.

a little birdie told me an update is coming out within days that addresses the key fob among other issues

So it's a software issue instead of front console wiring? Or by update do you mean a service memo to the Service Centers on how to address the wiring?

Yes, supposedly an OTA software update is coming real soon to a theater near you and if everything goes as planned, the fobs and key cards will function normally.
OTOH, the console wiring is a totally different basket. and may very well be a sporadic situation.

Probably something like, an OTA to fix whatever issues there were and if you stll have problems then it's a hardware thing.

So a couple of new things to report for me as I went on a road trip from LA to SF this past weekend.

Rear driver side window stopped working (did not roll down) - although the shade does still roll up and down.

I noticed a squeaky rattle coming from behind the driver side seat (I'm not sure if it's the actual driver seat or not) - the noise seems to come from the back though for sure and it's a squeak whenever I go over a bump. Definitely interesting, will have service look at this. Guessing this might be the 2nd row rattle/squeak that a few others have reported on in this thread already.

Another rather weird rumble/rattle I heard was like a vibration-like sound from the hood area in the front. The car is very quiet on the inside so the fact that when I was hitting 70-75 on the highway and hearing it told me it must've been pretty loud outside. It almost sounded like a buzzing/vibra/tion sound and as if perhaps either that something was loose or perhaps rattling. Another thing that I will have service take a look at. Wonder if anyone else has had this happen?

Other than that I've gotten my various warnings of different things at times but honestly have just gone away after the initial warning (i.e. headlight warning, keyfob not being present, etc).

Wasn't that the same window that quit working on @Ron_Burgundy's car?

And, yes, I think you have the same rattle a lot of other owners are reporting from the second row. From the driver's seat it sounds as if it's right behind you. I think Lucid is working on a fix that can be done by Service Centers and (maybe) mobile techs?

I’m happy you got your FDU replaced and that Lucid did a good job. Did they explain what the point of failure in the drive unit was, and the root cause? I find the motor and transmission an incredible piece of engineering. It’s partly what sold me on the car. I worry a little bit about the durability of any new technology, although these drive units have been in the Air for a while. That tiny differential inside the planetary gearbox seems like it would be subject to incredible stress, and that worries me long term. I wouldn’t want to lose one of these drive units outside of warranty. I tend to keep my cars a long time, and at $140K I don’t anticipate buying another any time in the future.

Yes, that’s the same window that stopped working on my car. However, my shade also stopped as, I am told, the regulator broke - so none of the actions the rear or driver door take to impact that window will work. This one sounds a bit more like a calibration or window seal adjustment issue…

Someone else please correct me, but I I don’t think these are the exact same drive units as the Air. They were modernized/upgraded in some way, I believe. Trying to remember where I heard that - may have been in the Lucid videos about Gravity.

I think you may be correct. I also remember that from the video. They are a similar design, but I believe the coil design was changed in the motor winding in the Gravity.

Lucid explained this in one of their technical videos. That differential only handles torque inside the motor, not at the wheels. The multi-gear design also reduces the load on each gear tooth by a factor of 7.

We're in the final countdown to see if the Gravity can be made ready for our road trip next week. The service team has a remote session at 3:00 p.m. today with Lucid Engineering, and they "are hoping that will have the vehicle working."

Sounds as if any hardware work is done and there's still an issue on the software end. The mobile app is showing the car being charged right now, but the navigation tab is still not showing the car's proper location, instead tagged as "Vehicle Location Temporarily Unavailable".

I'm still perplexed how this car made it through all the inspection gates at the factory and the delivery center.

We've offered to drive over to Miami and pick it up ourselves over the weekend if it is ready should no means of delivery be available from Lucid at the time. I'd actually prefer to put it on the road myself for a few hours nearer to home before taking it on a longer road trip next week. I'm really not in a trusting mood at the moment with this car.
