WINDSHIELD REFLECTIONS ( Dash & HUD)

I think many of us on here have had HUDs on other vehicles. I've had at least 5 across Mazda, Volvo, and BMW. While the Gravity's is the largest, highest, and brightest I have used, it is also the blurriest and by far the most reflective on the windshield, by a very wide margin.

Blurriest! yes! Not sure why though. Unless you are looking dead center and straight, the display gets blurry or distorted.

Our early demo drive had a mat over the HUD too. We now know the HUD can just be “off”, so it probably was to help with any sort of reflections since it wasn’t in use anyway.

Maybe but the part of the mirror is where reflection was coming from regardless of HUD Status.

I found that the HUD is very useful when navigating. Thankfully the mirror only aimed at the Sun for a few seconds here and there, no continuous blindings happened. Much better than I had feared it would be when I took the floor mat along to cover it. Never needed it.

Yeah, I worry that this is an unavoidable side effect of just being bigger, but I don't know enough projection optics, so maybe that's completely unfounded. Maybe the part delays have just made it hard to iterate and refine the HUD and it will get better with time.

Yeah I'm wondering if I just had bad luck with the reflections since I haven't seen it be that bad since that one time. Still, seeing it within the first 24 hours is not a great indicator.

I’m 5’10” and I’m still seeing partial HUD reflections when I raise the seat. Has anyone tried a matt anti-glare screen film?

I’m pretty sure I’m seeing the reflection of the screen on the right, not the housing. Either way, the artifacts are distracting, and the projection is not level.

If your problem is with the HUD casing and not the HUD itself, I feel there is nothing that Lucid can/will do to change this. In certain lighting, any irregular shapes on the dash will be reflected onto the windshield. Most people focus down the road and their brains ignore this reflection. Problem is, that some people fall in to the “once I see something, I can’t unsee it”.

If you're talking about the housing reflection in general, it's kind of unavoidable. You just need to google HUD reflection to see a bunch of images pop up from all different brands showing the housing being reflected on the windshield. The bigger the hosing the more noticeable it's going to be.

My complaint on the HUD isn't the housing reflection, but the weird blue bubbles that pop up under certain lighting conditions.

Yeah, I've always hated continuous blinding.

HUD FRAME DASH REFLECTION:

The HUD unit is secured and supported below the dash. So it is my understanding that to service , the dash comes out first. This implies in assembly the HUD goes in first and the trimming frame last.

Obviously this suggests that the frame allows greater fitment tolerances ie easier assembly. I cannot value this to or for the company.

BUT- there are some similarities to fitting a sink in or under a counter.

I’m old so I remember sinks with a lip that caught debris. And sinks with a frame that caught more. And a particular toothbrush dedicated to clean. Now sinks are fit with precision. My sinks are most often under counter. No frame. No lip. No debris.

In the dash, would there be NO FRAME REFLECTION?

I believe our human ability to filter out this noise has given dash designers to undervalue the distraction. Raked aerodynamic windshields have made dashes deeper and reflections more an issue. Hopefully more attention from us will encourage more attention from designers.

On a wry note in my Air I covered segments of bright trim that reflected in the side view mirrors. I have had many first time Lucid passengers. They were so enthralled with the design and quality. None noticed the strange asymmetrical tape ‘patches’ marring the long aesthetic lines of bright trim work.

OK. Now that I got my Gravity tinted. I added a front windshield crystalline tint @70% for heat rejecting. I swear, the blue blob's been gone, granted I only have it for a day. But this seems to stop a lot of reflections, although, it also seems to make the HUD display dimmer. Not sure if the issues is with the windshield glass or the actual HUD, but my now 70% tinted windshield seems to have resolve the shiny reflections for me, will need more time to confirm.

The blue oval isn’t visible all the time for me, it’s intermittent. I was under the impression a fix was being worked on but according to Lucid, this is normal behavior apparently.

I have my HUD on the lowest brightness, and I feel it’s still too bright. There’s a lot of room to brighten it if I tint the windshield, at least on mine.

If anyone has found a brand of polarized sunglasses that lets you see the HUD, please provide the brand and model. Both pairs of polarized lenses I have make the HUD completely invisible. Someone mentioned it has do with the direction of polarization (vertical vs. horizontal).

All I was told was that they were aware of the issue and were looking at implementing a fix (specifically in relation to the blue oval). Now I don't know whether that was a HUD replacement of updating the plastic covering protecting to something else etc. But it now seems to have changed to "this is normal behavior". I don't think any software update is going to get rid of the blue oval, it seems more hardware related.
