More amusing than anything, but the website Dashboard now has a pretty curious "Upgrades" section. Beyond the fact I have a Dream Edition, I have to wonder how they could possibly do these pretty significant hardware upgrades online:

This indicates that the “base” model comes with all the tech - you just need a software update to enable it…. Crazy…

We know this isn't the case, though -- that's why it's amusing. I assume this is someone pushing a new workflow to the production site. (I'm not going to click the "Purchase" button, just to be safe.)

Huh, there’s some noise on the Facebook and Reddit groups with people all whiny cuz they couldn’t upgrade to DDPro or SSPro later if they wanted, I wonder if this an attempt to try that approach. I don’t get that attitude though, just max out the car, why fuss over saving $5-7K on an already expensive vehicle?

I, for one, have been hoping that Lucid will release a subscription model for DD Pro like Tesla. Part of it is due to the fact that I missed the boat when I bought the car, and partly as a shareholder, I think it is a revenue stream for Lucid.

And I absolutely despise subscriptions for things like that. It drives me away from certain brands. It's part of the reason I drive a Lucid instead of a Tesla.

What, you're not going to renew your subscription for BMW's heated seats?

Seriously, though, the main problem with the "ship the hardware, allow upgrades later" is that it's strictly revenue management and the end customer ends up paying more. For Tesla, it's not a problem to ship every vehicle with the cameras needed for all the functionality. Lucid has chosen a very expensive sensor package option, that should work out better in the end... but it's probably around $1k in additional hardware, and the ratio of uptake on the subscription feature would push up costs for everyone. Differentiating the hardware shipped is the right solution as volume grows and every dollar of cost matters -- as is shipping all the features in the first vehicles.

Hold up, am I just stupidly out of touch with Lucid nowadays or did the DE Gravity not come with every option?

That has been on the website for a long time, since early Airs were all built with all of the hardware for DDP and SSP. At the time it made production simpler so they ate the hardware cost. This only lasted partway through 2023. Anyway, I believe it shows up for all of us regardless of what "upgrades" are actually available. It's always been there for me at least, and I do also have those options on my car.

Interesting! It definitely was not there for me before. The "Referral Program" link also just doesn't work for me -- it just returns me to the Designs page. (I've already reported that....)

One could argue that shipping all cars with fully loaded hardware can reduce costs due to larger and consistently guaranteed bulk orders with suppliers and reduced complexity/variation during assembly.

I'm torn on the whole idea and lean toward only including what you pay for upfront.

What are the sensor difference between dream drive packages?
Did they end up including LIDAR? Where is it located?
In the beginning of Air, full sensors were included but later some sensors were taken away unless you pay for the features.

My guess it's the same for the beginning of Gravity: full sensors for now. Who knows what happens next.

LIDAR is in front center, above the bumper, between the left and right headlights, below the hood lettering of LUCID.

I do not think this is the case with Gravity, given the reports of lack of DD2Pro on inventory vehicles. If the full sensor suite was present, they could sell these inventory vehicles with any trim level of DD2 (and would preferentially want to sell the top tier). I think this is just a website glitch.
