Hi all.

I’m considering putting window tints on my lease 2025 Air. Historically I’ve never had any issue returning a lease vehicle with tints put on it until I leased my first Tesla about six years ago. Tesla wanted to charge an astronomical rate to remove the tints. I’d previously leased Porsches Audis and Mercedes and never had that issue. Does anyone have personal experience with this and lucid? I know we’re really now only getting to the stage of potential lease returns for the first time of this vehicle. Is there any official policy set for anywhere that you all are aware of?

Thanks!

The lease agreement specified tint will be a charge. Doesn’t specify cost. However many tint shops will charge 200 to remove it, which isn’t too bad.

$200 just to remove? mine doesn't even cost that much to install lol. My guy removes it for free, because I always bring my new car to him. But it would probably only be about a $30 charge. You can really just rip um off your self. then just get goo gone to remove the glue residue.

Agreed. I think I'm gonna move forward. The car, like most, looks so much better with the tints.

My tint shop charges $25 to remove tint so $200 is def way too high. Enjoy the car the way you want it and deal with all that later.

I took delivery last Saturday at the Roswell service center and my delivery specialist mentioned they accept tint up to the GA legal limit (which I believe is 35%)

I have legal tints on my car (35%) and have never removed it on a lease return. i hope they dont charge me. the tints are perfect.

You will 100% be charged. Worth looking at the excess wear and tear thread for the nightmare lease return experiences. You cannot trust anything that Lucid says regarding lease return as the ultimate decision for your charges lies with Bank of America.

Here is something to think about. My Pure is just over 3 weeks old and the right 3rd of the cockpit display went out. The first question they asked me is if I had the windshield tinted. I said no and asked why. He said because it can cause water to leak into the car and short out the display. He explained how that can happen, but I can't remember. It seems a bit odd, but he said it's happened more than once. And the real clincher is that according to him the warranty wouldn't cover the repair if it was tinted.

I have no idea the accuracy of this, but thought I'd through it out there.

Yes, I would love to contact that employee and ask how putting a thin film over the inside of the windshield causes water to come in through the outside of the car.

$10 steamer takes it right off. Hold it close as you peel away slowly. The slower you go, the less glue you leave behind and Goof Off Pro remover solution will remove any remaining.

If I were to hazard a guess, it would be water dripping off the film onto the display during the film installation process.

He also said that a screen protector over the displays can damage them. That makes no sense to me. Most screens I have had on vehicles are shipped with a protective film. This was someone in service by the way.

I don't recall the specifics, but I recall reading at least once instance of someone who ended up shorting out some of the electronics during their tint installation as well.

This is from a conversation on reddit:

"Just had a service appointment today for my sound system and as soon as the service advisor got in the car and saw the windshield, he asked if I had my windshield tinted. He mentioned that there are 3 modules up front (unrelated to sound system) that break from water damage during the windshield tint install and it costs $5k out of pocket to replace them. Without them car won’t function."

And this article.

I don't know anything about the window tinting process, but I'm wondering why a heavy rain couldn't cause the same issue.

Window tint is usually applied on the inside of the window and they often spray water when applying. I’m assuming it’s that process they’re referring to and water is dripping into specific areas of the car and causing damage.

Okay, that makes sense now.

well, I didn’t tint my windshield only the side and back windows.

Yeah I’d stay away from tinting the windshield unless you are willing to pay a premium. People were saying $200 for a tint, which is crazy cheap imo. A friend of mine just tinted his glass for $2k+…
