I parked in a garage in Boston and there was a Tesla destination charger so I thought, hey, perfect time to try out the Tesla tap. So I connected and it charged ok. However when I tried to disconnect it, it got stuck. So I read the instructions and pushed the release handle on the TeslaTap and it still didn’t come out. So then I pushed the emergency charger release handle above it and then pulled on the Tesla charger and it came out…but it cracked and left the plastic housing of its own ground pin stuck inside the Lucid 5 pin J1772 input. So now I can’t charge the car! I reached out to Lucid service, they’re hopefully going to check it out in time before I have to leave for my road trip on Tuesday! So be careful with the TeslaTap if you have one, this sucks.

Sorry to hear that, it just sucks. Hope they resolve it quickly, before Tuesday.

Sorry to hear this.
Which one do you have? From http://www.umc-j1772.com/ ?
I bought one, too, and haven't tried it yet.

Yeah that’s the one. It’s the bottom plastic ground pin cover that snapped off inside the Lucid charging connector. I didn’t pull that hard either once I pushed the emergency release lever but it still broke. Lucid is gonna pay a mobile service visit to me Monday thank goodness.

I'm re-reading the instruction now. We're supposed to press in the release, wait to hear a click then pull it out.
I assume you did all that, but the darn thing just broke. Heat expansion?

Yeah I heard the click, so I thought it would pull out, but it didn’t. The Tesla end came out no problem.

This is terrible.
The TeslaTap, I recall, is more expensive than others.
I think Pete44 had run into some issues, too.
Is it worth it to use long-nose pliers to pull the remnant out?

Damn, I had not even heard of the TeslaTap until now. What a pain; glad mobile service will be taking good care of you.

I thought about trying that but don’t have any on me, and then also didn’t want to risk them damaging the Lucid’s ground connector. I asked them at the Lucid studio in Boston, and they were super helpful but said yeah don’t touch it, let service do it because I could damage the charging port.

Yeah luckily I charged to 80% before I left and I’ve still got 341 miles range left so I can just go about my plans like normal tomorrow then get home and they’ll fix it Monday. Needless to say I will be returning the TeslaTap. It shouldn’t break like that, I followed all instructions plus zero other J1772 connector have been a problem on the car.

Just read about the TeslaTap; because of your experience will be avoiding.

Hey bunnylebowski
I remember reading an article about the tesla tap...the guy did some fine sanding to facilitate the removal and insertion. My GT is here waiting for me to get home and I was planning on using a Tesla Tap since I also kept my Tesla. Hopefully, this was a defect in your unit and not a widespread problem.

Yeah I think there’s enough charging options out there where you don’t need it. It’s nice to be able to plug in and get some free range which is all I was trying to do, but honestly this car is such a range monster that you don’t need to bother.

Oh no!!

I use the 60amp Tesla Tap adaptor with my Tesla wall charger. sold my Tesla, but waiting for the Lucid wall charger to ship... then will replace.

I have not had any problems with this. only issue is that it does heat up during charging.

That's a great memory! My issue was different than @bunnylebowski's. The fit between the Tesla charger and Tesla tap can be too tight and when I tried to pull the charging cable out, it broke the Tesla plug. No issue with the Lucid connector.

The rep I spoke with on the phone is hoping they can just pull that piece out, and if not try the emergency release again (maybe I did it wrong?). They said worst case scenario though is the whole charging port needs to be replaced 🤬
