[Suggestions] Software features from other brands that make sense

Having owned a couple of other brands over the years, here are some relatively quiet but appreciated software-related behaviors and features that I miss from other makes and models that really helped me feel that "last mile" of polish and execution. I will readily admit that some of these vehicle behaviors are vestigially tied to ICE architectures where 12V battery drain is a concern and may not make technical sense on an EV platform but are nonetheless ingrained as "nice" or "expected" after years of vehicle ownership.

While there are several wishlist threads out there, the aim of this list is to collate ideas from myself and others to further refine the vehicle, and not necessarily introduce new headlining feature updates.

While no software effort is trivial, I believe these features exist in the realm of achievability in the spirit of incrementalism, and many of these things can likely be exposed as user preferences rather than hard changes:
  • A perceptible distinction between Ignition I (accessory) and II (on/ready to drive) states
    • At night, unlocking the vehicle illuminates light bars, DRLs, taillights etc. but does not illuminate headlamps
    • At night, auto headlamps don't turn on until ignition is on
    • At night, headlamps that can either be on or off after ignition is off ("coming home" lights - e.g. turn off when driver's door is opened while parked and driver's seatbelt is unbuckled)
    • HVAC that can wait to activate until ignition is on (e.g. activation tied to the brake pedal being depressed - mild weather use case; if it's hot/cold I'm definitely using remote climate)
    • HUD that remains "dark" until ignition is on
    • Mirrors fold with locking but don't unfold until ignition is on
  • A dedicated UI button to enable/disable airflow to the 3rd row
  • A 2nd row climate screen that can just be on regardless of occupant detection (the screen itself)
  • Blind spot monitoring that clearly shows if a vehicle is detected in the instrument cluster, not just in the mirrors or in the HUD, or only while DreamDrive is active (I don't mean the full-blown multi-lane view, it can be simple BSM iconography like the one that is always active in the HUD, but just on the instrument panel)
  • Air suspension that behaves in an expected way
    • As current, Auto mode defaults to Standard ride height, and lowers at speed for highway efficiency
    • If user deselects Auto mode or manually selects Low/Standard/High, the car stays at the selected ride height indefinitely through restart cycles
    • If user selects Lowest/Highest and vehicle speed becomes inappropriate for those settings, then change to Low/High as appropriate and maintain the new ride height indefinitely through restart cycles
    • Begin adjusting to defined Easy Entry ride height as soon as vehicle shifts to Park
    • Enable air suspension to always be able to adjust upwards regardless of door open status
    • No more "resetting to factory default" after beginning driving
  • More geofencing for "advanced" automation logic
    • Location-based ride height - e.g. park Highest always except at home, raise to High in this area with large bumps, park Low at home, etc.
  • Wipers alternate between moving up/down slightly about a 1/4 inch within the rest position each time the vehicle is turned off to exercise the rubber in both directions so they don't flatten/deform during periods of disuse
  • A 360 camera that is more zoomed out by default so it shows more of the surroundings particularly behind the vehicle (somewhere between the default view and the Unpark view)
  • A 360 camera that does not cache imaging in critical areas, causing double vision of parking lines, making it difficult to straighten/center the vehicle in the spot

I'm not sure all of these make sense. In particular, the ignition scheme that you have isn't really needed for EVs, and it may just take a while for you to get used to EVs to appreciate that it's much simpler to drive a car w/o having to worry about that difference between whether you're engaging the 12V battery or have the "engine on" like in an ICE vehicle. Imagine if you had to do the same two-step dance when you try to unlock your phone, for instance.
 
Yeah, there really is no need for the ignition state. That's a relic of gassers from years past. Some EVs mimic it, which I assume it to ease people into EVs, but those are some of the most annoying EVs to own in my experience. It's the main thing I hated about my BMW iX. Having to press an On button every time I got in, and THEN shift? Why?

Agreed. We had a Mach-E and while excellent in many ways, it's insistence on imitating ICE features was my main issue with the vehicle. Similar experience with an EV9. EVs and ICE vehicles are fundamentally different. Because it makes sense on one does not mean it does on the other. Cadillac is another brand that is in this in between state. I love the way the Lyriq looks, but its insistence on coddling ICE buyers is just annoying as an EV owner. They are just getting to PAAK and removing the start stop button...and still no frunk. Too many concessions for me to consider it.

As for the OP, out of the all the things mentioned, I do not see one that would truly make my quality of life better. To be fair, my list would probably be very different and focus more on what other EVs do than the traditional manufacturer.

i would definitely like the following enhancement in a Lucid (or other models, if they already don't have it):
haptic directional response on the Steering wheel indicating the next turn on the Navigation System. for instance, a unique haptic response on the left side of the steering wheel when a left turn is coming up; a unique haptic response on the right side of the wheel when a right turn is coming up.

Apple Watch has a fantastic implementation of it when either it, or your Phone or your Phone via CarPlay sends a turn notification. It is a very quiet and unmistakable way to inform the driver. i believe this would be a great addition. i frequently miss turns (or hurry to take it) when the sound is muted and i am in the middle of a conversation and am not paying a lot of attention to the screen. this innovation could make it harder to miss this signal.

OP, you are spot-on with this list, I've experienced (slight) annoyance with every one of the things you mention, other than the wiper tweak, that's a new idea.


Regarding the on/off button: I had an EV9, and after having the Gravity for a couple of months now, still wish it had ignition states / and On/Off button, too. I can see the convenience of not having one if you have a pretty standard routine, but with family life, it's helpful to be able to intentionally set the state of the car.

Example being: if I want to leave the car "running" and keep powering a plug-in cooler and A/C and not have the door handles automatically retract while I run back into the house to grab something with the key in my pocket. Or if I don't want to have it auto turn off and make me pull out my phone and use the app again for unlock and remote start if I want to run into the store for a moment and I don't have my key on me. Etc.

On the EV9 I never had to worry about doing that dance, but with the Gravity I'm often juggling whether to take the fob out of my pocket to leave on the dash to "keep the car on and unlocked", or dealing with the A/C logic resetting itself and having to tap A/C->Sync->Fan Speed when I get back in and it's gone through an ignition cycle by itself (separate but confounding issue with the stage management of the A/C).

the suggestion with the steering wheel is for Lucid's own navigation. makes sense?
 
I agree - many of the ignition-related suggestions are vestigial and there is no technical need on an EV platform. However, I think the root issue is a loss of being able to have user intentionality as a design input into a system (e.g. ignition state I/II), and have the system behave more optimally in more situations while maximizing appeal to both ICE and EV audiences. In my proposal, driving off would not require any behavior changes for those championing optimal EV platform design as the car behaves today, but having some configurability would throw a bone to those who want or expect the car to behave in a certain way - if we can, and we can - why not?

For example, auto unlock is great (when it works) but do we need to spin up the AC compressor if we're just grabbing something from the car? All approaches to the vehicle do not need the climate system engaged but that is the somewhat wasteful logic of what we're accepting here without more specific intentionality signaling or configurability.

Do we need to have the full suite of headlights fire up if I'm just un/plugging the vehicle? I just need the flap open/locking solenoid to release.

Does a synced AUTO 72 always require a hurricane from the blower even on mild days because the 3rd row vent activation logic is half baked? Or maybe we can just have a button to call for additional airflow as needed.

My point is software can be configurable and need not be locked in to a particular behavior - we don't need to accept one pattern for all.

Every behavior change you ask from someone is a point of friction. Every wonky detail that you as the owner have ingrained and accepted but you still feel the need to responsibly disclose before you hand the keys over is an excuse to stay the course.

Using ride height vs. school drop off as an example (is this a family vehicle?) - the scenario is loading up in the garage at home (standard/low for kids to get in) and exit curbside (highest needed, door still kisses grass), but can be generalized for any curb-related parking case. Remember the car will always reset to Standard shortly after setting off.
  • Option 1: Easy Entry/Exit disabled, Type B driver
    • Load the car at Standard
    • Make the drive
    • Park the car and set ride height to Highest
      • Tell everyone to wait for car to raise from Standard to Highest (2 levels)
    • Begin opening doors and unloading
  • Option 2: Easy Entry/Exit disabled, Type A driver
    • Load the car at Standard
    • Make the drive, and at some point after setting off outside the reset window, raise the car to High to save time
    • Park the car and set ride height to Highest
      • Tell everyone to wait for car to raise from High to Highest (1 level), or
      • Driver can get out, shut their door, and walk slowly (changing temporarily to personality type B) to the rear door while the car finishes raising
    • Begin opening doors and unloading
  • Option 3: Easy Entry/Exit enabled (Highest), Type B driver
    • Load the car at Highest
    • Make the drive (resets to Standard along the way)

Allowing ride height changes while doors are opened and enabling configuration of the ride height reset entrusts the driver to balance efficiency with convenience in their specific context and allows the operation of the vehicle to more seamlessly integrate into the daily rhythm of life. This is just one example of daily load that is one of the reasons my wife chooses to drive the XC90 which she can park anywhere and get out whenever - the car just disappears into the background.

I mean, yes, that's an annoyance, but you're talking about the tradeoff between having to press the button every time you get in and get out of the vehicle, for the very minor benefit of running into the house/store without a key that's like once every 10–20 occasions. And even then, there are multiple ways to keep the car "on": the power screen has a toggle to maintain power to outlets; there's "comfort mode" that keeps the AC on even w/ locked doors, and you can also just keep the doors unlocked on the left side of the cockpit view, etc.

I'm 90% sure that the ride height (lackof) options are there for safety reasons, not b/c Lucid is inconveniencing their customers on purpose.

I appreciate the discourse - the ability to adjust ride height up with an opened door was an allowed behavior on the Audi SQ7 I had. The things on this list are things I've seen or experienced with vehicles from other manufacturers. Of course Lucid can have a different position on legal liability, etc. than other manufacturers, but I am also echoing some frustrations other owners have had on this forum with their opened doors getting unexpectedly caught on curbs and being unable to raise the car to free the door.

To your point about safety, my Lexus ES 300 would let you lower the windows with the unlock button on the keyfob, but wouldn't let you raise the windows using the lock button on the keyfob. If you wanted to raise the windows from outside the vehicle, you had to physically insert the key into the driver's door lock, turn, and hold the key in the lock position. Years later, I was surprised that Volvo (a safety-focused brand) would let you close the windows remotely using the fob.

I mean, yes, that's an annoyance, but you're talking about the tradeoff between having to press the button every time you get in and get out of the vehicle, for the very minor benefit of running into the house/store without a key that's like once every 10–20 occasions. I fully agree with you - I personally don't need a button and I love just getting in and going - it feels like I'm living in the future. To be clear I am not advocating for having a button.

However, the car still has distinct pre-brake pedal push and post-brake pedal push "on" states, with the depression of the brake pedal being the intent to "start" the car and get going, initializing various systems, etc. What I am asking for is the ability for end users to customize the behaviors of ancillary systems like lighting or HVAC in the pre-brake pedal push state to accommodate the diversity of customer expectations or preferences. I am not asking for the unnecessary nerfing of EV platform opportunities, nor should these customization options come at the cost of supplanting or removing those conveniences and capabilities.

Like you and others have mentioned, it seems overly bending the design knee to customers transitioning from ICE is a turn off and can actually remove an otherwise competent vehicle from purchasing consideration. However, the great thing about software is that things don't have to be set in stone to the detriment of others - we can all win together.

As someone who lives in Texas, yes. I want it to blast the AC immediately upon unlocking, or at least as soon as the door is opened.

I'm driving a rented Volvo C40 and the second most annoying thing about it is that the AC doesn't kick on until I get in the car and actually put it into gear. So I can either sit there melting while I plug in my phone, or put on my glasses or whatever, or I have to put the car in gear and either hold the brake while I do those things, it immediately put it back in park, do what I need to do, and then put it back in gear. It's annoying as hell.

I'll take the 0.000001% battery wasted by kicking on the AC unnecessarily for 5 seconds when I just need to grab something from the car any day!!

And every customization toggle or setting you ask of the carmaker is an exponentially increasing combination of factors that need to be programmed and tested every time a new vehicle or software update is made. It can become utterly unmaintainable in very short order.
 
Lucid needs to focus on stabilizing current software and delivering promised (and paid for) features such as AR HUD, PAAK, usable cameras at night, curb rash detection, etc., before they go off on adding new features. Only must have new feature for me is adding Apple Music app.

Attempting to be all things to all people is futile. My must haves may not be the same as yours and vice versa. As a baseline I want things to work. More often than not these days features overshadow functionality. Case in point, who would have thought a door handle would be a cars Achilles heel.

Right, I'm not saying that this is universally impossible or unsafe, but I can also imagine that it's harder than we appreciate for it to be purely software-enabled. Another instance I can think of is different cars will stop closing their trunks upon encountering resistance (which is a safety feature, mandated) at different forces—but it's not a setting that the owner gets to tweak. Chances are, the feature would have to be designed and built with the cconfigurability in mind (e.g., if Volvo let you remotely close the window, they probably accounted for it with a force sensor in the mechanism itself).

I also appreciate the malleability of software—to an extent. The real cost is in supporting the myriad of configurations, and the inevitable edge cases: hundreds of combinations of behaviors, each having to be built and configured somewhere, then tested for each firmware rollout, etc. I've built software my entire career, and the dichotomy between consumer and enterprise has always been stark: the former, streamlined for common use cases; the latter, infinitely customizable at the expense of complexity and speed and ease of use. People dislike JIRA not because it can map to a hundred enterprise preferences and workflows, but because it's not fun or intuitive to use.
 
Two days of usage, but few things I noticed:

- AC/heat should start to run as soon as car is unlocked.
- More music apps (Amazon Music)
- Would be nice to have a preview map for turns in the front dashboard.

- Single way to enable DreamDrive. I had it set to Driver Assist but noticed that I couldn't enable anything at low spees (even just distance tracking). So now I set it to adaptive cruise but that means I have to press twice. I just want to activate driver assist and use whatever is available.
 
Two days of usage, but few things I noticed:

- AC/heat should start to run as soon as car is unlocked.
- More music apps (Amazon Music)
- Would be nice to have a preview map for turns in the front dashboard.

Your first request is already there (and I think has been for awhile, Lucid just added the rear seats). If you have the ac/heat on and shutdown the car the same settings will be on when you next get into the car.
can't comment on music apps as I only use Sirius XM
This is what HUD is isn't it? You have to purchase the Tech package to get this feature
The parking cameras already can come on. I know they come on when you put the car into reverse and you can also hit the "P" in the lower left of the main panel
For Dream Drive 2 Premium just enabling adaptive Cruise Control gets this for you. I do not have Dream Drive 2 Pro so can comment on ADAS
