Plate Transfer Difficulty in NY

I use outlet by Penn Station.

Last two license renewals were 10 minutes each at the NY Autos, take eye test pay the money get new license in the mail a week later.

Been 8 years so I'll be trying at the Autoshow again this year. Otherwise I'll use Penn Station outlet on my way home from the show.

Thanks! Already switched to new plates. I'm wondering whether using a DMV service can also help expedite plate transfer? But I'm not gonna be the guinea pig 😄
LOL...I thought of that too. Even mentioned it to my "delivery specialist" in Plainview. He said they already use a service, but not sure why he told me it would take up to 90 days anyway. I think the Plate Surrender is a much easier thing for those guys to close out.

One last point. There's a number of threads about "EZPass issues". Mine did not read well through my glass canopy. (Not sure if yours is glass.) Long story short...I spoke to EZPass and they recommended a pass secured to the license plate, rather than the kind that's inside the vehicle. They're sending one (at no cost). If you use EZPass, consider swapping for an exterior pass.

I am LITERALLY working on ezpass strategy as we speak (freaky) and just ordered internal replacement! So I have that external transponder on my BMW. See attached. It’s not the prettiest and I am actually thinking of ditching front plate entirely - I noticed every lucid and nice new luxury car in my town does NOT have front plate anymore (Nassau police don’t enforce unless pulled over for another reason). I have reg roof so not an issue? I’m gonna order the nice $15 silicon from Amazon and test on dash others say it’s OK

Great minds LOL.

Yeah...you may be ok with the aluminum roof. Interestingly, for what it's worth, they told me the external one can be put on the rear plate as well. Less ugly in my opinion than the front plate. And arguably less obtrusive than seeing it through the windshield, although the amazon pouch counters that :). Good luck and update us!

In CA, I avoid the DMV at all costs, by using AAA for nearly all my DMV services. The very small fee for a basic membership is worth my not having to waste my time at a DMV.

I don’t know if AAA in NY does DMV services, but if it does, I highly recommend it.

Thank you @borski! This is actually a great idea and I looked into this too LOL. AAA in NY does have locations that will do DMV services. Here's the catch: all DMV services including Plate Surrender are appointment only. And AAA anywhere in this area has....wait for it....NO APPOINTMENTS for a couple of months. I called my local AAA and they told me they're all fully booked for people who are trying to beat the deadline of converting their Driver's License to a "REAL/ENHANCED ID" in NY, which will be required for Airport ID shortly. It's an adventure 🤣

Haha oh no! You could try and just show up and wait; I find AAA generally to be super friendly, so if one of the agents has some time they'll likely help you out if you're nice about it. It would still be more pleasant than waiting at the DMV lol. Maybe call and ask if that's an option?

Mine's a done deal. (I went to a "PSB"...basically a private guy who did it for me. Cost me a few dollars, but literally just dropped my plates off and I was done.) Perhaps @LucidNYGuy may want to consider the AAA option.

Thanks but I've similarly waited for hours at NYC AAA getting an "International license" for Italy trip (IYKYK) and will avoid at all costs. On another note @Westchester Air do I need to request from CS that they dont punch hole for front plate? I cant remember seeing that asked.

(I agree BTW....Like I said...dropping my plates off and coming home was worth the extra money.)

Plainview did not ask me about the front plate. I think they just assumed since we're in NY that I would want this. (I do.) I think if you don't want the front plate, you should probably reach out ASAP.

oh boy doing now, thanks!

I am in Nassau County and have gotten 4 tickets for no front license plate over the last 8 years.
All of them were given while the car was either parked on the street or in a commuter parking lot.
I finally gave up and put the front plate on.
