We had initially ordered two Gravity Dream Editions. Now, due to one of them being wrecked, we just took delivery of a third one. These cars were built at almost exactly three-month intervals, with deliveries on June 30, September 29, and December 24.
So, are there signs that early production and software issues are receding?
On first blush I would say yes. Our first Gravity was plagued with hardware and software issues that had it in the shop more than five weeks in the first three months: rear drive unit failure (on an out-of-state trip), HUD replaced due to distorted screen, navigation and GPS systems not functioning, second-row seat squeaking, steering wheel soon to be replaced, wheel well trim misalignment -- and software issues too numerous to recount here.
The second Gravity had no significant hardware issues in the eight weeks it was on the road. It was, however, beset with a host of software issues, some the same as and some different from the ones we were having simultaneously with the first Gravity.
The third Gravity arrived with even better trim alignment than the second and with no detectable hardware issues as of yet. There was, however, a tiny paint chip on the rear hatch just above the left side of the rear lights.
Unlike the earlier two cars, all its software features programmed without a hitch. Even the halo security / dash cam feature functioned right off the bat. And its Homelink geofences the same as our Air -- something the first Gravity still does not do despite all software updates.
However, we've already noticed one software issue that it shares with the first two cars: HUD brightness doesn't respond to the slider bar.
I'd like to say that software glitches are fading out on our first Gravity as updates continue. Some have disappeared, but new ones continue to crop up. Since the 3.3.2 update we have had both NACS and CCS charging difficulties, the driver seat went spontaneously into full recline, and yesterday the car mysteriously lowered the charge limit to 50% from the 80% we had set. Accent lighting still won't return to the brightness setting we chose without first turning the lighting off altogether. One of the driver profiles became corrupted. Other software features randomly disengage without notice or warning. Homelink still won't geofence.
It's going to be several weeks before we put the newest Gravity on the road to any extent, as the PPF wrap won't start until January 5. But Day One got off to the best start we've seen yet with a new Gravity.
Finally, a note on exterior color. Our second Gravity was black, and the newest one is white. The black one was beautiful after a wash and hid light dust pretty well. But once the first fingers and hands touched anything, the gig was up. Today, as we were photographing the white one in bright sun, it looked as if it had just been washed and spit shined. To our surprise, when we cleaned the windows the cloth picked up quite a bit of fine, black road film. That same film was on the car paint but could hardly be detected even upon a closer look.
Also, as beautiful as the black car was, it had a rather featureless, hulking look. The car's contours stand out more on the white car and, somewhat to our surprise, we both like the white one's overall looks better. (FWIW, I've had both black and white cars over the years and have never been able to decide which I like better generally as a car color. It really depends on the particular car.)
