Not working Tesla wall charger but works with Tesla EVSE

I only see J1772s and only 48 amps max.
And $1200 a pop.
Tesla’s universal wall connector is probably one of the cheapest out there at $600 for J1772 and NACS or $450 for NACS only. Max is 48A, so sounds like you may not like that, but it’s solid hardware and software.

48A puts 35-36 miles of range per hour into Gravity (I know it’s based on efficiency, etc but it’s a metric people understand) - so I find it to be more than enough for charging, but understand some folks may need faster.

Oh, I see NACS is coming soon.

They also don’t have to be the same EVSE. My set up is I have an LCHCS on a 100amp breaker, and the Wallbox on a separate 60A breaker… but it is set up with a load meter to measure current through the mains in real time, so the Wallbox adjusts the amperage in real-time. If you *have* to use one breaker, okay, but that seems an artificial limitation; I don’t use the full 48A continuous when the 80A continuous EVSE is running, and it adjusts in real-time.

That way, the Lucid EVSE is always “the fast one” and the Wallbox is always “the slow one” until the Lucid EVSE is done charging.
 
If you *have* to use one breaker, okay, but that seems an artificial limitation;
Another poster upthread needs one breaker since that's what's separated out, meter-wise.

I want one breaker since it would cost me electrican dollars to install a second breaker and run wires. At least I have some spare space in my breaker box now - I didn't back in the day.

Got it. There are other options to load share a single 80-100A breaker too, but they’re not cheaper, to your point

I learned that the direct charging did not work but Thanks toi this board I contacted TeslaTap company and discussed this with them. They recommended the TeslaTap Lightening because it was designed to deliver 80 Amps continually which they thought would be better for the Lucid. they do not test the chargers with the Lucid so much of what they say is logical theory which many not be true.
So the charger would not work until I lowered the setting to 56 AMPS. The TeslaTap people recommended that I turn the second dip switch on the Tesla Gen 2 charger off so that both switches were down (or Off). they said that if you do t his you would not need to wait 30 seconds to plug in the teslatap into your car. I did do this and I did not have to wait.
MY PROBLEM: the car stops charging after a period of time. I charged from 49% to 60% and the charger stopped but then it restarted a few minutes later. The App said unplug and re-plug in the charging cable. then It charged to 70% and stopped There were several start and stops between 70 and 76% before I stopped the charging effort.

Anyone have this experience and overcome it? I was thinking of reducing the output to 48 Amps to see if it made any difference?

I think everyone has had to reduce to 48A to get it to work correctly. I haven’t done it, but that’s what I recollect.

I'd be interested in hearing what TeslaTap thinks that second dip switch is there for.
 
Mine was the Gen2, so it's the older one.
I also have been using the older Tesla 80A gen2 wall connector fine with my Air since 2022 or last 3 years with no errors.

Maybe there's a difference between the Air and Gravity for Tesla wall connector setup.

How about if you do an experiment to hook your Tesla cable to J1772 adapter first then hook that with J1772 to NACS to your Gravity.

Since the TeslaTap adapters filter the signals, that'll probably work fine. Although I personally wouldn't recommend using two adapters to charge except in an emergency.

Thank you for your response. I called Teslatap and spoke to them about their adapters. They recommended that the second dip switcch be turned off as it was intended for Tesal protocols in the USA. They said that if you turn it off you no lon ger need to wait 30 seconds to plug in. thats the advaantage per TeslaTap. When I charged at 56 Amps I wnet from 59% to 70% and charging stopped. My message on the Lucid app said unplug and reconnect charging cable to continue. When I got to the car it had restarted. It stopped at 71% and at 72% and at 73% so I discontinued charging and changed thee setting to 48 amps. I am waiting for the charge level to decrease to try charging again. Noting on the adapters of NACS connector felt hot or even very warm.

This made me wonder if aanyone has found an 80 amp charger that actually works with the Lucid Gravity? I have called a coouple of cocmpanies but they do not acknowlege testing with a Lucid. the "Grizzl-e looks interesting but does anyone know if it is compatable to cahrge to 80% with no issues???

How about the Lucid Connected Home Charging Station - NACS? That’s what I’m switching to to replace 3 Gen-2 Tesla Wall Connectors:


The advantage is that it supports OCPP 1.6J protocol, which allows you to have multiple chargers sharing current. This needs a server for that, which can be set up at home.
 
Update 3.3.9 below addresses the 80A charger error. Will it fix the Tesla 80A Gen2 problem too?

I was wondering the exact same thing. I haven’t heard of issues with any other 80A charger, so I suspect that’s what they’re trying to address. I don’t have one to try it on when I get the update though.

I really to like this Lucid Connected Charging station, BUT, I am not a fan of the concept of purchasing a new charging station every time I purchase a new EV or a new Brand of EV. What I have not actually found is a company that has tried to confirm that their home wall chargers work with multiple brands.
I have invested in the heavy wiring and high amperage breaker on my panel and would like to be able to charge quickly on occasions. I would also like to be able to plug and play with my charger and not worry that it would fail to charge or stop charging prematurely.
I love that the Lucid accepts 19.2 K but am dismayed that it is not clear which chargers will work?
I did call TeslaTap and inquire they are considering a NACS to NACS 80 Amp adapter and the answer was, "Not at this time"

What are the important features that we would like to see in a home level 2 charging unit.
Are there settings that allow an 80 amp home charger to be set to a lower amperage breaker like there is on the Lucid and Tesla Models?
Fun question, Lucid has released a similar charger three times, is there a notable difference between the Original Connected home charger and the second release and now there is a third release that comes with J-1772 or NACS choice of connector.

I had inquired about when 3.3.8 was going to be released a week ago and was told that 3.3.9 was going to be released in 2 weeks unless there was a glitch discovered. looking forward to it.
 
Just to followup and offer a thank you to Ron Burgundy for his previous comment which was helpful. While I could charge at 56 Amps I had several variances in charging rate and several stop charging notifications on the app. I reduced the setting to 48 Amps and all errors and variances in charging current disappeared. The Gravity charged to 80% and then stopped charging. The difference was I decreased the charge specks from 45 mph and 13kW to 38 mph and 11kW. Because I no longer own a Tesla I was able to move dip switch #2 to off (down) and the dial to setting "9" which is 48 Amps. I sooth the teslatap lightening adapter which was still connected to the J-1772 to NACS adapter that came with the Gravity and popped it on the Tesla NACS plug on the charger and plugged the assembly directly into the Gravity with no more the a 2 second delay and charging began immediately and did not stop until I was at 80%. Full disclosure, I installed 3.3.9 last night and do not know if that had any effect. What I know is that it WORKED!

I have the Gen-2 Wall Connectors set to 48A. I plug the Tesla NACS plug directly into the Gravity. The car says Cable Connected immediately and Charging starts soon thereafter. I have left dip Switch #2 to Normal (UP). Putting switch #2 to Legacy has not worked for me.

I still charge Teslas, and this is part of a shared 3 Wall Connector setup. The charger that I am changing settings on is the Master Charger that communicates with the other chargers to set their respective current, which maxes out at 48A.
