For those of us old enough VW ran a whole series of clever / funny adverts. with their beetle. They had a sunroof adv. with Wilt Chamberlain driving the car with his head sticking out above the car. Can't find it but this was the joke:
They also showed how water-tight the bug was by showing it floating
... a famous bit because the joke was "If Ted Kennedy drove a VW he'd be president."
(refers to this ^ where his mistress drowned when he drunkenly missed the bridge and the car sunk).
It's true. You couldn't close the door on a beetle without cracking a window open or you'd blow your eardrums out. I learned to drive on a series of beetles, also learned how to "hot-wire" a car on one, and what understeer and snap oversteer is. Early VW experiences were practice for driving a 911 at 90 mph backwards into the woods. I understand Porsche has fixed this problem ? You hardly ever see a 911 deep in the woods anymore.
