My dynamic range is really low

I called in to the Service Center in AZ because after two trips in Economy Mode on the highway at a fixed speed of 70 mph, ambient temperature in the 60's, and tire pressure at 43 psi, I only obtained an efficiency of 3.01 m/kWh.

To set the stage,
  • I am on my 6th electric vehicle (one Nissan Leaf, three Tesla's and one BMW iX) so I am very familiar with how to drive to see optimum efficiency.
  • I took delivery of my Gravity with 7 seats on December 17th.
  • The stated range of my new car with the tires and features I purchased is 437 miles.
  • In order to obtain a range of 437, I would have to see an efficiency of 3.55 m/kWh.
  • I have had the car now for three weeks.
  • The odometer is just under 1000 miles.
The Owners Manual at page 104 states:
"NOTE: Efficiency is suboptimal during the early life of the vehicle (approximately the first 2000 miles of driving)".

So, I expect that my range should improve over the next few weeks as I add more miles to the car. However, I am concerned that while the efficiency might improve, I am doubtful I will ever get the 3.55 m/kWh that they advertise.

I will post more as I continue to monitor my performance in the future.....
3.01 m/kWh seems outstanding to me for a vehicle the size of a Gravity. I'm sure someone, sometime can achieve 3.55, but that has to be vanishingly rare.

I can't imagine ever reaching EPA rated mileage, since virtually no cars, ICE or EV, ever reach those numbers. On the other hand, there are some hyper-milers on this forum that will provide much more information than I can. I'll never reach high efficiency ratings, because my smile is connected to my right foot and I really love to smile! :)

It’s certainly doable getting into the 3’s even on the 7 seater with larger wheels, albeit rare.

I'm pretty sure there's something wrong with my drive unit, I had the persistent warning to contact service but in the week I had the message my dynamic range plummeted to the 2.3x range even though I was doing the same amount/kind of driving I've been doing for a while now. It's at the SC now (although it's been sitting in the same place for over a week now without having been looked at) and I mentioned it when I dropped it off so I'll see what it looks like whenever I get it back.

My driving is mostly short, 5 mile jaunts. I spent some time on multiple 35 mile trips over a couple hours and my efficiency went WAY up compared to normal. It appears to that if the battery is warmed up (it was in the 40s) the efficiency is much better. I know that makes sense and is widely known - I hadn’t experienced it.

Gives me real world experience that longer trips are going to be way better than I had prepared myself for. What a great damn car!!!!
Right, opposite to other EVs, the GGT doesn't do well on a slow stop and go city traffic due to its weight. That's why it does better at a constant highway speed.

some specs-

Had the car for 6 days now, weather here is in the high 50's as of late
I have been using smooth mostly at a standard ride height
GT edition 20" tires no 7th row
My rated range at 80% is showing 355 at 80% which is close enough to the 450 at 100%
My dynamic range at 80% 2.85 kwh efficiency is only giving me 270 miles, should I be concerned over this and contact service?
That is not the real problem. I have had my Lucid for 2.5 years and the real mileage left at any time is 2/3 of what the gauge shows. In other words, at any % charge if you look at the estimated miles left, it will be 2/3 of what it shows. If it shows 60 miles, you only have 40 miles left. That's what it is consistently here in Miami and I drive it at moderate speeds with the A/C at 72 degrees.

This is a thread about Gravity, not Air. Gravity has a separate range estimate called “dynamic range” which is actually very, very accurate. It also has a “rated range” which is the same as EPA.

Air only has the “rated range” unless you are using the Lucid navigation, which is when the “range on arrival” is very accurate.

So if OP’s “dynamic range” is off, that is a problem, as it is generally quite accurate, and is unrelated to your experience with your Air.

Your Air experience holds true, still, for the Gravity’s “rated range,” though; just not what we’re discussing. :)

I'm at 1,999 miles this morning. I'm sitting at around 2.58 to 2.7. So if I drive my car some time this morning, I expect to see a noticeable bump up in efficiency.

About about 3.55 number mentioned earlier, I wonder how slow I'd have to drive to achieve that number...
Well, you'd have to drive like the EPA test cycle, which isn't how any "normal" person drives. It's a mix of city driving at an average speed of something like 20 MPH, and highway driving at an average speed of something like 50 MPH. I expect all of us like to get on the highway and go at least 65, and that gives a level of air resistance that the EPA cycle doesn't include.

It was 70 Degrees in Chicagoland (the warmest day I ever had the Gravity) and we turned off the AC and drove with windows open, magically got 3.68 mi/kwh for a 10 mi errand stretch in stop and go...

Take all the seats out except the drivers and I'm betting you can get it over 4.0 😂

Let us know if that happens. I'm not sure there is an electronic switch that turns up efficiency at 2K miles. I hope it does!

Hot air through the open windows inflates the Gravity like a hot air balloon!

I've never been close to 3, and I really drive like a grandma. I am in smooth 99% of the time, and with construction in my area it's almost impossible to drive above 65 on the highway. 58-60 is more typical. With the weather warming up, I am going to be watching this keenly. I am a little afraid I may have a drive issue, given that I have also had some odd charging errors that nobody seems to be able to figure out.

I think they rejiggered their estimator algo going from 3.1.x->3.4.x. My numbers went noticeably down after the update.

Hi Neighbor !

I'm that guy with 19's at high pressure, in the right lane, going the speed limit, accelerating slowly, downwind and downhill, without heat or air conditioning, getting 500+ miles on 100% charge when the batteries were brand new.

I'm also that guy on 21" summers, blowing the doors off an Italian Exotic, uphill and into the wind; getting 100 miles on 100% charge.

nice to have it both ways

Just as a theory, but someone had said the dynamic range takes a hit for all the time the car is running, but not moving. We have a habit of sitting in it with the climate control on listening to music or the end of a program. That made some sense to me. I would imagine anytime it is not "asleep" it's dropping the dynamic range somewhat. We are at 2.85 now on the GGT and the weather has been nice lately.

This is really the absolute beauty of EVs- having gigantic horsepower doesn't compromise the drivability, mileage, or utility of the cars

my mi/kwh plummeted to 2.15 over the winter but's climbed to 2.65 as of late- hoping to get it up to over 3 in the summer
