More phantom braking in the last month or so ...

I have learned to deal with this issue by constantly keeping my foot ready to tap on the accelerator as it has become a regular event. You are all correct that trucks on the right especially if there is a slight curvature in the road. While it’s frustrating I am hoping that the adas teams are taking this issue seriously.
None of us wants to see anyone injured. The truth of the matter is Lucid needs to deploy a team of drivers or solicit interest from the forum for those willing to participate in testing. While I love all the hype, it’s important to clean this up.

Wow. So sorry to hear of all the folks who are having this issue. I had to give up on using all ADAS software on my Model 3 because it would constantly phantom brake, so I totally get the frustration. It was the number one reason why I would never consider another Tesla. (There are other reasons, but that was the HUGE one.)

So far, I haven't seen this behavior at all in my Air, thank goodness. It's scary as hell. Hope Lucid get to the bottom of this ASAP.

I wonder if it could be a sensor issue? One camera getting a false signal, etc? I'd love to know the common denominator amongst the cars that seem to have it.

Not sure if this is related, in terms of causal factors, to the typical highway phantom braking (which I haven’t experienced). Not infrequently, when backing out of my garage, it seems the car sees something neither my wife or I ever see as I back on to the street. In response to this phantom object, I get a quick warning followed by an almost immediate slamming on of the brakes. That’s disconcerting enough (and embarrassing) at such low speeds, so I can well imagine how scary it is at highway speeds.

The only thing we can think of is that it’s the sunlight angle causing deep shadows that the sensors interpret as a solid object on the street. Backing out of the garage with our i5, in the same manner, results in no such drama. Go figure.

It happened a few times on straight, flat sections of the freeway also. I couldn’t pinpoint the scenarios as when I think it would happen, it didn’t, and then it happened when I was not expecting which made it scarier. The only anecdotal evidence I have was asking the GF in passenger seat (after she could breathe again when her soul returned to her body each time) to describe the truck we were passing when it happened, and it was usually what I described previously.

Whatever the cause, I hope it gets fixed, because I’d hate to hear about an accident or injury. But I’m happy to report, it was a long, comfortable drive with AA working great, the car drove itself nicely most of the time when in DA mode and handled great in AC mode (other than the phantom braking), and EA charging was mostly successful.

This is interesting. Could it be height of the trucks that pass a deep shadow suddenly around the car while passing? That might also explain why it happens on slight curves as that deep shadow could “move” around the car. Interesting theory.

Its not always with a truck on a curve. I've also had it with a bicyclist on my right on a regular 40 mph two lane road when I'm in the right lane.

Correct. I had it with small cars too.

This is not related. This is the rear parking protection or similar triggering. Mine has done that in the driveway since I bought the car. It’s convinced that the light coming through my fence at mid day are objects.

Following up on a couple of observations in this thread, I specifically tested Drive Assist from middle lane, overtaking an 18 wheeler that was in the right lane,. I approached it as we were going through a left turn. Zero issues. Edit: this was at night, for reference.

12 hours of driving this past weekend, used drive assist for significant portions. no phantom braking issues .. well just once, it did hesitate around a curve for a brief moment but then resolved immediately with only a very brief tap on the brake. overall great experience with it. only thing that I would change is when the right lane splits, maybe for a slow lane, it was tempted to stay to the right a few times. that was about it. it did a great job when cars were entering and merging into the right lane where I was, that was super cool. other times I was in the middle lane, no issues. and yes, I did drive myself for a bunch and of course, that's great and may involve the left lane at times. looking fwd to the hands-free release, that will be nice for sure.

I have done this same thing and have yet to experience phantom braking. There was one time when the car got a little confused, but it was all kinds of confused and threw up a big 'take control now' warning and made me wait 5-10 seconds before re-enabling it, so it wasn't the same issue (and didn't happen near an 18 wheeler or anything).

Aside: the Gravity will automatically shift slightly away from large vehicles, like an 18-wheeler, same as a human does, and puts up a little message on the screen that says something like 'adding more space on the right' or similar.
