Often times, the problem is the installation of your system itself. You should check the breaker and the wiring to make sure it is up to spec. Which charger are you using, the one that came at the car? What type of outlet is on the wall? Best to include pictures so people here can try to help you.
The system has been working fine for the last year. I don't think it is the breaker because once it trips I would need to manually turn it back on. I'm using a NEMA 14-50 plug installed by an electrician. I'm using the Mobile Charger provided by Lucid. When I check the status on the mobile app is first says "Cable Connected", with the stop charging and set limit buttons grayed out. Then after a few seconds it says it is "Preparing to Charge", then a few seconds later it says "Charging". No interaction from me. I'm wondering if it is an app issue? The app reports 9 kW when charging, which I believe is correct. Or perhaps a charger issue that thinks it is over heating?
Well, it seems the best way to rule it out would be to try the same charger at somebody else's home who also has a 14–50 outlet.
Can you take a picture of the 14-50 receptacle? I would bet dollars to donuts it is a cheapo Leviton from Home Depot and that that is your problem.
Sorry, I meant - can you flip off the breaker, unscrew those four screws, and take a picture of the receptacle without the faceplate? You’re basically trying to see if it looks like:
Thanks for this. My Chargepoint charger died, and I thought I would replace it with an outlet since I have the Lucid Cable, so knowing that he specs will help. Besides a cover and a GFI anything special for an outdoor install?
You can't use a GFCI to supply an EV charging station, so you can't use a 14-50 receptacle outdoors. You'd have to replace the Chargepoint with another hardwired, outdoor-rated unit, from Chargepoint or some other company.
Agreeing with @tonybot - you can tell from the relatively small diameter of the round plastic face that it's not a heavy-duty industrial/EV-rated receptacle.
Thanks. Took some alcohol, Q-tips and a straw brush. Cleaned a lot of grime from the plug. Reset circuit breaker and it now seems to work. Hopefully not just St a one time fix.
Could be that you could get a replacement cable for it from Chargepoint if needed. If your unit is the Home Flex, it's pretty easy to replace the cable.
After measuring I have the light-duty (2.1") receptacle face.
I suspect it is the problem and the mobile charger is shutting down to prevent fire as the receptacle overheats. Even if it isn't the problem today though, it is unsafe. It's an easy swap to the proper receptacle and faceplate, as long as the junction box behind it isn't small or shallow.
