MKBHD's review of the Lucid Gravity

He’s like every typical influencer. Jack of all trades and master of none. Problem is, when they have large followings people take what they say as gospel and they know it. All they really care about is the clicks, not whether they got the all the info right in the video.
To be fair he’s a good tech reviewer. He’s the most watched technology guy on the platform. I’m not sure why he started “reviewing” cars other than he probably likes them and he’s now rich enough to have nice ones. He’s also likely trying to expand his channel’s viewership.

What does Kyle Connor say about the Gravity? Has he done one yet? I know, I know, I could just check for myself on YouTube.

I did enjoy the review - some of the criticisms are probably a bit subjective though. Overall I think he liked the car, the concerns over the brand being around and having financial trouble is something everyone has had a concern of so I don't blame him for pointing that out.

Conner has driven the Gravity several times in videos, but always pre-production units and usually under supervision. He's also done a very extensive review of Gravity powertrain technology. He and Tom Moloughney (of "State of Charge") have done very extensive charge testing on a production unit and found Lucid's claims about speed and broad charge curves to be justified.

However, when reviewing the car on which he did the charge testing he said that he would be doing an extensive independent test drive in the next week or two -- something that has either not yet happened in the ensuing four months or that has not yet been posted. Shortly after this video, Tom Moloughney explained that he and Kyle had been given special access for their charge tests the week before the big "Press Week" that Lucid hosted and that Lucid could not make a car available to Kyle in the time frame he had anticipated.

But that was all four months ago. It's a mystery to me why Conner has not yet reported an independent test drive and is part of what drives my suspicion that Lucid is keeping cars withheld from the major reviewers because they know they are still riddled with problems. It's also why I wonder how Brownlee got access to the car he reviewed: a loaner from an owner, a car he bought, provided by Lucid?

Basically, though, Conner and his whole crew rave about about the Gravity, pronouncing it the most significant EV introduction of the year and perhaps the best SUV -- EV or ICE -- on the market.

Here's the review he did ahead of the charge test:

He's using mid-size wheels and dinging it for not getting close to 440 miles range! One of his shots even shows 386 miles range at 100% battery.
And note that this was the dynamic range, meaning it is based on conditions, how you’re driving, etc. It is unlike the Air’s estimate, which is EPA-based.

318,368 views in less than 1 day that is a good exposure better than Conner which is 240K in 4 months
Not necessarily good when he can't ever seem to get the fundamentals right in any of his car videos. While Conner can talk, he's way more knowledgeable on the specs in all his EV reviews. MK8HD always gets something wrong, he needs to stop doing car reviews as it's clearly something he's not that good at \ interested in. Seems he just does it as another avenue for money using his popularity.

That is definitely how it feels.

Let’s not trash the guy. He tends to cover tech as a whole and not just cars or EV cars. He therefore is not going to be an expert on all things. In the end he was very positive, called out a couple minor issues he saw but overall said he loved the Gravity. His platform is quite large, so this is a win for Lucid.
Nobody on this site really learned anything new but he probably reached a large number of people who had never heard of Lucid before (which is probably why Lucid loaded him the tester for a couple days.

I would bet it was provided by Lucid. First, when he shows the key and key card, they’re connected in some way and there’s a barcode or something on the keycard pouch. Looks like something Lucid or a manufacturer would do.

Second, regardless of whether he’s good or bad at car reviews, I’ve never seen him do one where he didn’t find at least several things he identifies as fairly significant issues - not the case here. Yes, he mentions the fob, but doesn’t explain what the issue is, etc - just says it in passing.

I expect Lucid gave it to him and made sure he didn’t have anything too damning to say…

They can’t/won’t do that with Out of Spec as Lucid knows they won’t just gloss over issues based on their Air discussions.

Ultimately, it makes sense for Lucid to keep it away from reviewers until fob and other items are addressed.

His tech reviews are great, he spends a lot of time researching and properly using the products before hand.

His car reviews feel like they are lacking that level of diligence. But what truly matters is that he is a very popular Youtuber, so its important that the product he has in front of him is an accurate representation of the best the brand can do. Whiel I agree that he skipped a lot of important details, unfortunately, the majority of his audience will not notice or care. This is probably the most views a Gravity Youtube video will get.

Kyle is fantastic and thorough in his reviews, but for the majority of the folks out there, his videos are too long and too "techy" for them to engage with. I personally love them though.

Same goes for SavageGeese.

As far as leg room, it is common to set all 3 rows to your own height, it would just help to know what the height is…

I didn’t see him move things excessively and the tray table was not sitting amazing in 2nd row

I didn't see him move the seats at all. He seemed to have the front seat set to his driving position and then got out and got into the back seat. You could tell from the position of the seat base relative to the carpet cutouts that the second row seat was all the way back, where it remained while he tried it and then got into the third row. Also, to have as much extra legroom as this 6'3" guy had behind a front seat that was in his driving position indicated the seat was probably all the way back. It also showed that the Gravity has legroom to spare for almost anyone -- and that there was plenty of room to move the second row forward to create more third-row legroom than the video showed.

I think back to Jason Cammisa's podcast in which he said the second row legroom felt almost unnatural in how far away from the front seat it was. It certainly has more legroom than our Honda Odyssey when I set the front seats of both cars to my preferred position. It's just uncanny what Lucid can do to find space in a given car shell.

I sat in the 3rd of a Gravity prototype last year for an hour long roadtrip, I am 6ft 3, and the person sitting in front of me in the second row was also over 6ft tall.

I will say my experience was predominantly the same as MKBHD's experience...I had just about enough legroom, which is startling, since in the past, I have had to sit sideways in most 3 row SUVs or minivans.

I can share pics/vids if needed

Do you know where the second-row seat was set during your ride?

I don't recall moving it at all, and like I mentioned, the person in the second row in front of me was also over 6ft tall

Sorry, the pics arent the best quality, but you can see my knees are right up against the back of the second row seats, but not pushed into it.
And you should be able to make out the space in the second row for a 6ft tall person. The driver if i am not mistaken was around 5ft 10, and in his normal driving position.

I think the third row can provide more legroom for the very tall if the second-row passengers will give up a little while still remaining comfortable. In one of the early prototypes a "Throttle House" crew member who is 6'7" got in the third row and found he could easily sit facing forward with the second row moved forward just a bit.

Not only does the Gravity have a slightly longer wheelbase than the Honda Odyssey, its cabin is pushed more forward over the front wheels, and all that extra length is used to create considerably more legroom than in our Odyssey in all three rows simultaneously. It's one of those packaging feats that only Lucid has pulled off so successfully in both the Air and the Gravity.

He must realize he’s not a great car reviewer as that other guy does the actual driving discussion…

I don't watch all of their car reviews but the ones I have seems like he's been passing the driving part of the reviews off to Miles more and more since he got some flak for posting a video driving a Lamborghini 96mph in a posted 35mph residential area past visible "children present" signs. I think he also gets a fair number of comments about how amateurish his driving reviews tended to be.

Still not great reviews honestly but he gets a lot of eyes on his videos so good to see a mostly positive showing for the Gravity at this stage.

Zach Walker is probably one of the most passionate and diligent engineers I have met. He worked tirelessly to ensure the spacing in the Gravity was just right

Thanks to him, I have never had to be concerned about the legroom or headroom in the Gravity, I have consistently recommended this car to any friend that needs a 3 row SUV!
